Happy New Year everyone. It's just gone Midnight here in the UK so I can officially say I'm going on my first Disney cruise NEXT YEAR, doesn't that sound a lot better than "in 2010". ;)

Check the Premier Inn. That's where we are thinking of staying. Someone on here recommended it.

Are you still thinking of going on this cruise or are you switching?

Hi Gydell - still doing the research....:lmao:

How are you & the family? Did Brent have a good Christmas?

We're good! Christmas was good and Brent got everything on his list and then some. Can't wait to see you in May!

Have fun at Will's tonight!

Happy 2009 everyone!

Hope everyone had a safe and fun night last night!

Wow ... next year we'll be cruising the Baltic!

What do you wanna know :) I can try to help - we're just down the road! We went a couple of days ago and even tho it was bitterly bitterly cold and dull I couldn't resist taking some photos of the harbour etc, I'll upload them when I get a chance.

We've stayed at the Premier Inn a few years ago and it was neat and tidy and clean .....

Happy New Year!

So we're back from New Year with the in-laws and I have just two words for the experience - never again!!! MIL managed to sap all the enjoyment out of the entire evening - for someone who invited us, she certainly seemed to resent every aspect of our presence!!! :confused3 In a strange twist of fate, SIL was the saving grace of this year's experience - I virtually hung onto her leg to prevent her from going home!!! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Mmmm, anyway it's done, dusted and hopefully we've learned from the experience... ;)

2009 has started well - this morning I managed to book an Illuminations cruise for our Easter WDW vacation!!! :yay: :dance3: :yay: Oh and next year we cruise the Baltic - happy day!!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Recovered from NYE yesterday. Gydell, I actually watched a couple of bowl games yesterday too.:lmao: The Captial One bowl and the Rose Bowl. Definately won't be missing the big game tonight: the Sugar Bowl, Roll Tide Roll!!!!

Looking forward to trips this year and the Baltic next year. Nice to be able to say next year instead of two years away or 2010.

Hope everyone has a wonderful and safe 2009!!!!

Better late than never
:cool1: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!:cool1:
Wishing all of you a safe, healthy and happy year!

No doubt about it we will be watching the Sugar Bowl! Sorry but pulling for the other team. Alabama will probably win... but I can hope.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!....better late than never. ;)

I haven't been able to catch up on this thread since I got back from WDW. :headache: I hope to try and keep up a bit more regularly now things are returning to normal after the holidays.

I hope everyone is well and I am looking forward to cruising with you all next year. :woohoo:

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Hope everyone stays safe but has fun.

Eva - prime rib - YUM!! (insert smiley w/ drool here) :lmao:

I'm off to my friend Will's house later for card playing & a tab bit of drinking (heehee). Spending the night there too.

It has become a yearly tradition for us to have prime rib on New Years. I've finally found the perfect way to cook it.

Think thats the way the conversation ran earlier in the thread lol :rotfl2:

Here's some info my dh put together for a different board - hope its of interest .....

If anybody wants any tips of what to do in Dover or nearby for a day or two either side of the cruise I'd be happy to help.

For starters I'd recommend a trip to Canterbury with loads of old buildings, city walls and a fantastic cathedral, but a better choice if you have a few hours to spare might be a trip to Dover castle. It's huge and has things to see spanning from a Roman lighthouse, though medieval keep and castle to a secret World War II base.

If you want to visit DLP as well, a good travel option, as already mentioned, would be Eurostar. You can catch it from Ashford direct to the gates DLP, and the station in Ashford is only a 20 minute or so drive up the M20 from Dover. Or you can get a train direct to Asford from Dover that takes about 30 mins. Then it's 2 hours or so to the gates of DLP, and MUCH less hastle than getting a flight from the UK to France.

When we were on the Med. cruise I could never understand why the 'Home' port was Barcelona and not Marseilles as there is a direct TGV service from Marseilles to DLP that takes about 4 hours. It would have been really easy for DCL to organise joint Park and Cruise packages similar to the way they do in Florida.

It's quite a way [London to Dover], I'd be prepared for a couple of hours on the transfer coach, but you might get lucky with the traffic and it could be a lot less. The fastest train connection I can find from Gatwick is a little over 2 hours, and from Heathrow is about 2 hours and 40 mins. From central London to Dover is about 1 hour 30 mins by train.

If you are going directly from the flight to the cruise and are driving or getting on a coach, then I'd recommend coming in to Gatwick rather than Heathrow, Gatwick is much closer to Dover and the drive from Heathrow takes you through the worst bit of the M25 (The London Orbital motorway).

The only other thing that I can suggest is that you avoid going straight from the airport to the ship on the train, The transfer from Paddington to Victoria or Charing Cross if flying into Heathrow, or the change(s) involved going via Tonbridge if flying in to Gatwick would, in my opinion, be quite awkward and stressful, especially for a family with lots of luggage.

If you are having a night, or more in London before getting on the ship, I don't think it really matters which airport you come into, and getting the train isn't as bad an option as it is from an airport to Dover as it is direct from central London.

I guess it looks like I'm following DCL's advice and suggesting that a night in London before the cruise is a good idea.

If you want to find out about train times here is a good site to check out.

National Rail Enquiries - Official source for rail information, UK train times and timetables

Although by the time the cruise comes around there will (allegedly) be a high speed train service from central London to Dover. And the high speed trains will depart from St. Pancras station, which is worth a visit in its own right.

Links removed here *** I'm not allowed as I haven't posted often enough :sad2:

Now any more questions ;) He's much more thorough than I am!

Thanks for all that info. I've got to start working on a preliminary itinerary for this trip sometime soon.
