Northern Sights and Mickey's MAGICal Delights-1st Baltic Cruise-June 12,2010-Pt 2

Haven't been on the thread in a long time. We booked on Day 1 without really taking a hard look at the price. Since then, DH & I have repeatedly concluded that we can't afford it, but I just can't let go. DD will be 16 and loves history. I know that if we don't do it next summer, we won't do it.

DH has been away this weekend, so I've been number-crunching cruise package, estimated transatlantic air, shore excursions (no idea of Disney prices, but St P and Berlin are hundred of dollars each on other lines, so that's a clue) and all the incidentals on board. Gave up all hopes for a pre-or post-stay in London or Paris ... just go, spend arrival day in London, cruise and fly home.

Remember those books called "Europe on $10 a Day"? How about one day in London for $1000? Choke. Airport hotel (cheaper than in town) so we can use our airport/port transfers next morning, express train to/from the city, meals, an open-air bus tour to see the major sites and tickets to the Tower of London. Forget theatre tickets .. we'd be too jet-lagged to enjoy a show anyway. I'm guessing on meals (anyone eaten at the Hard Rock Cafe in London lately?), but the other figures are accurate and allow for exchange rate. I guess I shouldn't be so surprised, the cruise runs more than $1000 a day too when I add it all up.

We have done two Panama Canal transits and six in the Caribbean with Disney. We love the Disney Cruise Line, but I can't believe how much more expensive this is .. not to mention what the air may cost. I wonder if they realize how many people they've already lost given the cost and how many more they may yet lose. We have two Wonder cruises booked for next summer as a fallback, but they don't compare to the Baltic. I know I should have transferred the ressie to a placeholder for the new ships, but hate to admit that it's just not feasible. Sigh.

I think most of us are hoping for lower prices but......:confused3
We're going in a downgraded cabin and doing tours on our own except for St. Petersburg to save money. Am waiting for airfare to drop in price to help that cost.

Hello Everyone from Warnemünde, Germany!!

I am an American who lives here... and I have to say, I was never more excited by cruise news as I was when I heard that Disney was coming here next year!

We did our first Disney cruise this year (although it was my 69th overall) and it was one of my favorite EVER!

Now, each day as I watch the ships sailing out of the Warnow into the Baltic and blowing the horn, I smile and think how AWESOME it will be next year to hear "When You Wish Upon a Star" as the Magic sails through the Moles.

Warnemünde may be the port stop for Berlin, but there is a LOT to see and do in this area of Germany!

Looking forward to next year!:cool1:

If the aire fare stays the same we might be doing our touring before the cruises as right now I can get to LHR for about 800 and change if we leave in May.

Once we lock in the airfare we will be working on our pre and post cruise touring....

Will see as our return date become available.

Dave and Micha welcome.

Oh I am so excited that you popped in. I hope you can clue us in on some of the things that we can do near the port. I will not be going into Berlin and would like to spend half a day doing something like tour a castle or similar.

I'm excited too! Never been to Germany before so we are planning on doing the towns around the port. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since we are not doing any of the DCL excursions.

Dave and Micha, thanks for offering your guidance. While it's hard to think of not seeing Berlin since we're so "close", it's great to know there might be other simpler and more affordable options. We welcome your suggestions!

Welcome!!!! I would love to hear everything you can tell us about Warnemunde and Berlin. This is the port stop we're looking forward to the most since we've got German in our background.

I forgot to give you all an update: Ozzy went back to Chattanooga on Thursday for his first echo since his diagnosis and we got a good report!!!! When he was diagnosed his ventricle was only contracting at about 8%, normal is in the 40% range. He's now up to 22%, which they said for his condition is excellent. They said his medicine is working great and we shouldn't change a thing. He'll need another EKG in a month, but they said we might be able to put off the next echo instead of having it in six months.

Ozzy has gotten really spoiled since his diagnosis though, he was spoiled before, but he's really spoiled now. Today he got his own pet. He's got a hamster now. He just stares at it, it's hilarious. You know your pet is spoiled when they have their own pet.:lmao:

The prices are really quite frightening still aren't they. The cost of the cruise alone for us I think is around £7000 although this keeps fluctuating with the exchange rate. I don't know how this compares really but at the back of my mind is that for that price we could buy a nearly new family car so we have room for our new arrival in december, or get all the work done on the house and garden that needs doing, or even put the money towards moving to a new house!!! Everyone thinks we're mad for considering spending this much on a holiday

I do hope its gonna be worth it?! I get the feeling at the moment that we're just gonna be paying for a small fancy room and nice food on tap for a fortnight, I can't really get my head around the destinations or how easy it will be to do tours etc with a toddler and baby in tow ....??? I know it will be relaxing to stay on the cruise ship for a few weeks but I can't justify the cost for that alone!

It is going to be expensive! Make sure and have one of those things that carries the baby is on your back and you should be good to go!

You shouldn't let other people's opinions sway your decision, just because they think your crazy doesn't mean it's not the right decision for you. The memories you'll have from the trip will be priceless, that's the way we look at our vacations. A lot of people we know think we're crazy for cruising every year, going to WDW at least once a year, etc, but it's the memories that count, not the money.

Sounds like he's working the situation!:rotfl:

Oh, he's definitely working the situation very well.:rotfl:

Good Morning Cruisers!

Dave and Michael - we also will only be touring around the port - so any suggestions would be great!

We also had to drop stateroom categories to afford this cruise, and we will probably not do any excursions except for St. Petersburg, the rest I think we can do on our own. But the memories will be worth the cost!

Have a great day all!

I totally agree.......this trip is going to be a $h!tload of money :scared1:....and we're still not sure we can really afford it (thanks to the tumbling economy) that's one of the reasons we will probably put off getting our flights for awhile. I just don't want to find we have to cancel and then be stuck with some very expensive flights we can't use. In the meantime, we're still buying our Powerball tickets every week!

I'm just thinking though......even if the price went down, it wouldn't really affect us anyway, right? It would just be for new bookings. I can certainly see that happening, but we would have to cancel, rebook and probably lose some other incentives in the process.

The cruise prices have continued to climb since we made our reservations. I doubt that they will come down any.

I think it depends on how many people end up canceling right before the payment due date. If there are alot of cancellations, we could see prices coming down. JMHO.

Just Curious how much is a $h!tload....:rotfl2::rotfl2::thumbsup2

Thank God for DVC on our end.... :thumbsup2:worship:
