Any thoughts on where this might lead or what our response should be?

I just saw Bush's response on TV. He had a strange twitch with his lip, right after he said nuclear, it was really strange.

I don't know were it will lead, but it is just another indication that we picked the wrong country to invade. North Korea is much more of a threat than Iraq, they actually have WMD's. Bush got it wrong again, and I really don't know what we can do about it.

I don't know what our response should be, but it distrubs me. They are a threat that we really don't want. I hope the Chinese and the Japanese take the lead on this one honestly.

If we had invaded North Korea, you do understand that their would be no South Korea now don't you. North Korea would have hit South Korea with everything they had and then some. China would have gotten involved and all hell would have broken out. You have to pick your battles sometimes...

As far as what the response will be: Look for Japan, South Korea, Tawain, and others in that region to go nuclear. And look for the countries that have nuclear weapons, to start testing a newer version of the weapons they already have. The race is on. Thank you Bill Clinton for all you didn't do.

Here's one plan - anyone got something better?

1) Give a speech telling the North Koreans their actions are "unacceptable" who knows, that alone may get them to change their minds

2) Condemn NK for "defying the will of the international community" note - no matter how hard, it's important to keep a straight face while doing this

3) Ask the UN Security Council to look into the matter and - gash - impose sanctions or something now we are talking about the big guns

Unfortunately, this is one of those times when there are no good answers - only a bunch of horrible ones. Let's hope we pick the least horrible.

I sure hope nothing major comes of this. My husband is stationed in South Korea right now for a year. I have been worried sick. I know this is something that the US cannot afford to turn a blind eye to but I hope that we can find a diplomatic way of dealing with this.

I fear this may be all too true

I agree. We need to see what the surrounding countries do. If they stand together they can take care of NK. That nutjob wants to reunite NK and SK under himself and only China and Japan standing with SK will stop him.

No..no...no. You don't understand. Every bad thing that happens in the world is further evidence that President Bush is an idiot.

Well duh.

Really. On July 4th, after being threatened with "dire consequences" by the U.S. if he shot of his missiles, King Ding Dong shot off his missiles.

What did we do about it? :confused3

So now, we tell King Ding Dong that he'd better not test his nuclear capabilities, and he tests his nuclear capabilities.

What are we going to do about it? :confused3

Probably nothing but more empty blustering from Washington, and I'm sure that Iran is watching closely and taking notes.

Here's an idea! Let's just leave the crazy Korean guy with nuclear weapons alone, and keep invading countries like Iraq for no reason!

I would say that Madalyn Albright and Bill Clinton got it wrong again.

What action should the U.S. have taken that you would have supported?

China and Japan will work together around the same time they are having snowball fights in Hades. Besides, Japan isn't exactly a force to be reckoned with.

I don't know that China will ever get involved. China worries only about itself...and China is under no threat. No WAY anyone is going to attack them. They are SO not like us. If they were attacked, they'd wipe out every living thing in the region that attacked them. Everyone knows this, so nobody bothers them.

I think we need to have a talk with them and then go in after this lunatic ourselves. We're the ones at risk.

But we can't do it without China's support. It is their area. Just think about what we'd do if they decided to go into Canada.

I doubt China would mind, though, if we decided it was time for that guy and his supporters to die.

I'm sure we'd hear a lot about how N. Korea is its own country, we have no right to be there, the troops are spread too thin, and President Bush is evil...but I still think we need to take care of this.

If memory serves, the warhead they detonated was meant to be relatively small, south of the Hiroshima bomb's power.

Still sucks though :(

If you were running a country that had been called part of an "axis of evil", by the world's dominant superpower and said superpower had then invaded one of the other parts of that "axis of evil", what would you do to stop your country getting invaded? You'd go nuclear, just as N. Korea and Iran are now doing.

Just because they have nukes doesn't mean they intend to use them, it's just the old deterent strategy. Who can blame them?

I'd like to ask a simple question...wouldn't an underground nuclear detonation show up on a seismograph somewhere? So far, all we have to go on is the North Korea says that they tested the device. I remember when the US was doing undergound testing, I was living in LA and they said "if you feel a small earthquake, it is from the test."...so logically, we should have been able to verify the test almost immediately, right?

Wouldn't it also show up on some sort of nuclear detector, like a geiger counter? I though they sent a plane to Japan that could detect radiation from a detonation.

I'm not saying they didn't do a test...but wouldn't there be proof somewhere?
