Our trip is in three weeks, and I just broke my right arm and severed a ligament in my left wrist. As I was realizing all the many uses of arms and hands, trying to get my freaking front door open...the mailman showed up with my letter containing the ME tags. I broke down crying like an insane person. Ugh.....

So please give me some inspiration on how I can still have fun in WDW with both arms out of commission (casted). I will be going with DH and DS6.

P.S...this is a serious post..FWIW

Lots of Pixie Dust to you my friend....I'm sure it will not be easy but just think being at WDW with 2 bad arms is better then being at home with two bad arms any day....

First of all, big pixie dust going to you. :wizard: Second of all, you can go on the slow-moving rides that you don't need to hold on to the handlebars, like Winnie the Pooh, It's a Small world, etc. Hope you have a great time though!

My heart goes out to you. How much improvement does your doctor expect in three weeks time? That's a lot of healing time. Maybe one or both of them will be significantly better, plus you will possibly "get used to" (if that's possible) manageing with them a little by then. Best of luck! Go for it.

I can't even imagine how you typed your post!!! Lots of pixie dust for a quick recovery! At least you'll be at Disney....and you will be taking it slow, that's for sure.

I would have all the charactors sign my cast if I were you!

What an excellent idea!!! You can save the cast afterward and have one of the most original "souveniers" of all time!!

Pixie dust to you for a wonderful trip in spite of your injuries.. :grouphug:

Hey, doesn't this mean that your family won't have to wait in long lines, since you're now "hand"icapped?

Also, if you're in a cast - make sure "cast"members and Disney characters sign it - what a souvenir!
You might want to ask the doctor about the "itching" and discomfort you might face in FL - he/she might have ideas on how to alleviate some symptoms and what to watch for.

As for the pools, looks like you'll be able to put your feet up and relax at the pool or in the room, while DH does all the child watching, what a relaxing time for yourself.
:earsgirl: :earsboy:

I hope that you feel better very soon! Sending pixie dust your way for a magical vacation :wizard: I know that this is easier said than done: Just make the most of this...get characters to sign your cast, enjoy the scenery, parades, fireworks. I hope that everything turns out wonderful for you! :flower:

Are either of your casts waterproof? Last summer, DS 1, broke his arm. A friend told me to make sure to get a waterproof cast. It was the best advice ever!!! He was able to swim and bathe so easily. I know some people do not get the waterproof cast, because some insurance compainies will not cover the extra cost. Thankfully ours did, but even so the extra cost would have only been $36. Well worth it in my opinion!

Pixie dust to you :wizard: ! I am sure you will have a wonderful time!

Hi! :sunny: I know it's a play on words about being "hand"-icapped but I just wanted to make sure that people are aware that there is not front of the line access for people with disabilities. The only "front of the line" passes I'm aware of are for the people who are on Make a Wish type trips and have had special arrangements made with WDW.

I have a disabled child who has a permanent disability and we are in line the rest of the guests, except when we use Fastpass.

Here's a prayer for a quick recovery!!!! One armis bad enough, but both out of commission...... not so fun!! My tip (warning) is to be VERY careful with the heat and the arms swelling in casts. also very important if you are flying.... pressurized cabins can make things worse. Don't want to have the arms/fingers swell and have a problem cutting off circulation!! Not trying to be an alarmist..... just the medical professional coming through. That being said, I myself have gone to WDW 2 weeks after breaking myRight arm (of course I am right handed!!) like a previous poster said, try to avoid ride where you might feel the need to hang on for dear life!!! TOT comes to mind for me! drink lots, bring pain meds, and be careful in the heat. I found resting the bad arm on top of my head helped with pain. keep it elevated whenever possible. take it slow and easy. I'm sure your 6YO smiling at WDW will make the pain go away!! GO and ENJOY

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I was thinking that they couldn't yell at you for putting your hands up on the rides!!!! :rotfl:

As long as you are pain free, I'd still go and just avoid the rides with a lot of force like rockin rollercoaster and space mtn and mission space. I'd still do Splash and big thunder. But let me tell you I rode all of those rides except Mission Space when I was 10 weeks preggers too. ( and before I get bashed it was with MD okay  )

I am so sorry! I don't have any first hand experience, but last year my son (13 years old) came back from a church youth mission trip with a broken hand. We were leaving in 2 days for a 17 day trip to Yellowstone! I had gone to a lot of trouble to find hotels all over the western US with great pools and now he couldn't get in one! :rolleyes2

If this helps, the cast did become a point of conversation everywhere we went. We got to meet a lot of great people from all over the world because of that cast!

He broke it in a silly only-a-boy way...he was playing around with another kid - they were "passing licks" (which means hitting each other on the bicep as hard as they can and seeing who is the toughest) when he missed! He thought sure I would be all mad about it, I was not. Hey, a broken hand is punishment enough. But I did make him tell everyone what happened when they asked how he broke it! :teeth: This resulted in a lot of "oh, let me tell you the stupid thing I did when I was a kid" stories!

Maybe your casts will do the same! Hope your trip is great!

Did you tell your MD about your upcoming vacation? I broke my wrist a few weeks before a trip to Key West, where snorling was on the agenda. I told the on-call orthopedic surgeon while I was in the ER and it pushed him to do surgery (setting the bones with a pin) a few days later rather than give me a traditional plaster/fiberglass cast. I was able to swim and shower, but had to wear a plastic cast-like thing over the wrist while it healed. It might not be an option for your kind of fracture, though, and probably not an option at all for the ligament. If you haven't already told your MD about the trip, be sure to do so. He or she might have some good ideas/alternatives/suggestions.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. Get plenty of calcium and rest.

Oh, and please make sure you're more diligent about physical therapy than I was! I continue to have problems turning my hand all the way over, and oftentimes drop the coins when a cashier tries to give me my change.
