I'm thinking about getting one. The price is the same for both. Is one better then the other. They both have 3G wireless, but the Nook has a bigger book selection.

Just looking for opinions on the two.

I love my kindle. :lovestruc

That said however, if you can swing a bit more money, go for an iPad. You get so much more for your money, plus the kindle app is free, and it also comes with it's own ireader too ( the pages turn like real pages). All the features of the kindle are the same (except I think the text to speech feature). Since I got my iPad I haven't touched my kindle and am thinking of selling it.

I just got a Nook and absolutely love it! I have not compared it IRL to the Kindle, but it is wonderful. I love that I can get books right away. If I go to the store I can read any book for an hour per day. I can get coupons to be used in the store like free items from Starbucks, money off of magazines, etc. Right now they are offering a free ebook a week (in addition to all the free public domain books.) I highly recommend it!

I love my Kindle but I've never used a Nook. I LOVE that it is simple and easy to use and it fits in my bag. I LOVE the free books it has and being able to download a book and the newspaper on top of a volcano (last Fall in Hawaii on vacation) was such a great thing.

Going online on a Kindle isn't very user-friendly, however. Seeing things like Facebook are maddening. If you can swing it, I'd suggest getting the iPad if you are interested in a dual-purpose device.

DH works for the Kindle department, and was at a Borders today. Went to the Nook display and did a side by side. He was done what whatever he was doing (I think he started a search for the same book on each) with the Kindle before the Nook had even finished a search. Yeah, he's happy with the Kindle.

Nook!
I compared Nook, Kindle & Sony. The Nook is what I bought.

I don't know why the previous poster had trouble searching for a book on the nook - sounds like a user/unfamiliarity issue - I have no trouble searching and downloading books in under a minute.
***EDIT to add: The above poster's husband works for Amazon***

Top reasons I picked the Nook: expandable & removable memory; eReader software; larger selection; lending ability.

I also prefer the touchscreen and I already was a B&N preferred reader member. Bonus - the software was recently updated and now I can play sudoku (and chess)!!!

I got dh the kindle a few months ago...he loves it!

I researched it at the time...half of the Nook's book selection were copyright-free scans which kindle also had but didn't include in their numbers.
Also, at the time kindle had more of the NYTimes bestseller list available than the nook did.
This may have changed. I'm sure there has been a recent article comparing the two.

I went with the Nook for 2 reasons:

Firstly, the Nook has an SD card slot so that you can expand your onboard library, where with the Kindle you are limited to the hard drive size.

Secondly, the Nook has the flexibility to borrow e-books from the library as well as supporting multiple file formats (epub, pdb, and pdf) where the kindle only supports the kindle format and PDF. It gives more options for where you purchase your ebooks from.

That said, I know people who have the kindle and love it and they are fine with only buying books from Amazon.

I would not buy an iPad for reading e-books. You might as well read on your computer. An e-reader (like Nook, Kindle, or Sony's) will not cause eye strain because the e-ink screen is very similar to reading an actual book.

I have a Kindle. I got it before the Nook came out, but I have played with a Nook and I like my Kindle better. It might just be that I'm used to it!

I'm in the market for an eReader, too. With all these differing opinions, you guys aren't helping much. :rotfl:

I guess I'll sit and wait for more people to chime in. I've played with the Nook, and the iPad. It's unfortunate that Amazon doesn't have an outlet where you can try out the Kindle.

I still haven't decided yet either, but I'm leaning towards the Nook. I have both apps on my iphone, and so far the books I have wanted are only available through B&N and not Amazon. That really surprises me since the Kindle has been around for so much longer.

Also, let me warn you. I am spending WAYYYYY more money on books now than I did in just buying them. Because I have my phone on me at all times, I can devour a book as opposed to just reading in bed or in my living room. I could go broke doing that. :scared1:

I've played with the iPad, and even though I'm probably going to get one when my home laptop dies (any day now!), I still prefer the Kindle to the reader on there. I might change my mind after I read a book on it, however, but that was my initial reaction.

Sounds like me and my Keurig. I drank coffee every once in awhile, now I drink 3 or 4 cups per day! The downfalls of making things in life easier!

Oh, I know the feeling. That one click Amazon ordering gets me in big trouble!

I got a Kindle before Nook was available. Love it!!!! :hippie: If it broke today, I might look at both before buying but I would never consider an Ipad as a replacement.

I have a Kindle and love it. I can buy books from Amazon and loads of other sites, so I'm not sure why people think you HAVE to buy from Amazon. I have found hundreds of free books and I really like how Amazon now separates the top 100 free books from the top selling books so I can easily find new free releases. The people on the Kindleboards have been amazingly helpful when I've had questions, and Amazon's customer service is top notch. An Ipad is tempting, but I want a dedicated ebook reader not an all-in-one device when I read. I love how easy the e-ink is on my eyes, and how portable the Kindle is; I can just toss it in my purse and go. My hands hurt less now that I read on my Kindle, and I love that I can be at the beach and finish book #4 and have book #5 in under a minute. The lack of an expandable memory card doesn't bother me as I can have roughly 1,500 books on my Kindle as well as store them on my computer. The books I buy from Amazon are also archived there, so I can grab them when I want in under a minute. I also have magazine subscriptions, it's very nice to have them automatically delivered and not worry about storing them later as they're short story collections and I may want to re-read them eventually.

If you're a person who uses a library often and your library supports ebook lending, a Kindle may not be the best choice. My library system only lends audiobooks, and I buy my books, (didn't like other people's cooties when I still read DTBs) so that wasn't an issue for me. My Kindle is also helping to keep the 9 book cases in my bedroom from exploding as my books were taking over. Even taking into account the cost of the Kindle, I've spent waaay less on books than I used to because I refuse to pay over $9.99 and that's half of what I was paying for new release hardcovers. I'm patient (and cheap), I'll wait until a book hits the price point I want.

I love how much the marketplace has grown in the last couple of years and I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever you choose. I would make a list of authors/books you want and compare them at Amazon, Apple, B&N and Sony to see which one offers you the better overall pricing. I wouldn't depend on claims that one particular site is always cheaper.

They do. Kindles are being distributed to Target stores, although I think it's just Florida and Minneapolis so far.

Yay for e-readers! I have a Kindle, but I'm all for any of them. I figure the more popular they become, the more quickly they'll deal with all the DRM issues and maybe get around to allowing cross platform purchases.

The only thing I wouldn't read on is the iPad. It's pretty cool, but not as comfortable to read (eInk is amazingly easy on the eyes) on or to hold and I can't throw it into my bag to take with me. It's great for a many things, but not as a reader.

I'm also thinking of breaking down and seeing about finally getting en Ereader.

I've wanted a Kindle ever since it came out. But, I have heard that it doesn't do pdf files well.
I have tons of books on my computer and almost all of them are in pdf format.

I want to make sure that I can load my own books onto whatever Ereader I buy and be able to easily read it. So I'm not sure what I will buy yet.

I love my Kindle. I am not interested in getting on the internet, so the lack of an actual browser doesn't bother me. I already have a laptop, so I don't need an ipad (besides, I've read that the ipad is just about the worse thing to read an ebook on). I don't use the local library, so lending doesn't interest me. The touchscreen is neither here nor there with me, so that wasn't a big selling point. I want an ereader that I can easily read books on, download new books quickly, get samples chapters on, and be easily carried everywhere with me. The Kindle is all of that (and a bag of chips!). I wouldn't trade it for anything.:cloud9:

My dh compared the ereader by Sony, the Kindle and the Nook...and decided that the Nook was what he wanted. He FINALLY made a decision last night - he was trying to decide between the Nook and a tattoo for a combo birthday/father's day gift. We went to Barnes and Noble (which is where the Nook is from) and played with one (again). He walked away and said "I want the Nook"..lol. So..next month...he'll get it. And I get to use it too on our upcoming drive in August to WDW. Plus...our bookshelves are WAY overstuffed and he'll spend less money after the initial investment on books. :goodvibes
