Nook VS Kindle

Nook!
I compared Nook, Kindle & Sony. The Nook is what I bought.

I don't know why the previous poster had trouble searching for a book on the nook - sounds like a user/unfamiliarity issue - I have no trouble searching and downloading books in under a minute.

I did state very clearly that he works in the Kindle department; it wasn't a secret.

He knows how to use a Nook. He tries it out whenever he's at a Borders. This time he pulled out his Kindle and did a search on both for a book (like he was trying to buy a book). The Kindle connected much faster than the Nook did. That's what I said.

Since part of his job is testing the speed of connectivity, and since I as a normal user know that even 30 seconds of watching and waiting for your book to download can be annoying, speed is important, and the Nook was just much slower. Side by side, same place, same time.

I am going to give a quick comparison of the iPad and the Kindle since I have both.
I LOVE my Kindle and my iPad but I find it harder to read books on my iPad.
One reason is the iPad is heavier, the screen gets smudgy EASY, the screen has glare and I do not happen to have a CC on file w/ iTunes.
I also have not found a good iPad cover and the one on my Kindle I love!

Well, if you want the best of both worlds buy a Kindle AND an iPad!

I LOVE my Kindle DX for pleasure reading, but the magazine experience is not the best. So I was thrilled to see that the Zinio app for iPad has several of the women's magazines I read and subscribe to available digitally. WOW - what a great reading experience!

A backlit device hurts my eyes if I read a novel, but a magazine is perfect. Best of both worlds - now if only all the magazines I want to read would become available. My goal is to have all my reading material in ereader format of one sort or another and to become completely paperless.

Which Kindle cover do you have, M&M's Mom? I have an M Edge leather cover for my Kindle and I just received the iPad one - I love them! The reader fits snugly on the right hand side with two leather pieces at the bottom corners to secure it and two leather and elastic straps at the top corners to keep it snug. The cover looks like a leather portfolio and I thought they were reasonably priced at about 50 bucks each. My Kindle DX is in red and my iPad is in green - love them both!!

I just got a Nook and absolutely love it! I have not compared it IRL to the Kindle, but it is wonderful. I love that I can get books right away. If I go to the store I can read any book for an hour per day. I can get coupons to be used in the store like free items from Starbucks, money off of magazines, etc. Right now they are offering a free ebook a week (in addition to all the free public domain books.) I highly recommend it!

Just got my Nook last week and I LOVE it...for pretty much all the reasons you state! I was torn between the two, the reason I went with Nook is because TO ME it had just a few more features that I liked...including games, the memory card slot to be able upload music and pix and to store more books and the (slow) internet capapbilites (won't use them much, but I have already played on my facebook account with my Nook..lol) And I bought it at Best Buy and it was the same price as the Kindle, I belong to the rewards program will get $5 reward certificate. Those extra few "little things" is what pushed me toward the Nook (and I was able to buy it NOW and not have to wait for the UPS man to show up..lol

I went with the Nook for 2 reasons:

Firstly, the Nook has an SD card slot so that you can expand your onboard library, where with the Kindle you are limited to the hard drive size.

Secondly, the Nook has the flexibility to borrow e-books from the library as well as supporting multiple file formats (epub, pdb, and pdf) where the kindle only supports the kindle format and PDF. It gives more options for where you purchase your ebooks from.

That said, I know people who have the kindle and love it and they are fine with only buying books from Amazon.

I would not buy an iPad for reading e-books. You might as well read on your computer. An e-reader (like Nook, Kindle, or Sony's) will not cause eye strain because the e-ink screen is very similar to reading an actual book.

My kids bought me a nook for Mother's Day and I love it. I have been downloading free books on Free Fridays and so far I am thrilled. I also can borrow books from the Library adn form other Nook owners so that is wonderful. I was told, but I do not know for sure, if something happens to the Kindle you can lose your books. I had an issue with my nook, took it back to B&N, and they gave me a new one with no questions asked. My books were there when i charged it.

My DS had a nook but he just purchased an Ipad. he had purchased the nook to store his textbooks on but was not able to really use it for that purpose. The font was way too small when he opened them up to see the graphs, etc. The Ipad can show the pages without compromising the grahics.

I have not noticed that loading a book onto the nook takes very long but have nothing to compare it too. The ssearch function works quicklly IMO as well.

This is totally false. Amazon backs up all your purchased books and you can download or store them at your whim. Read a book, send it back to Amazon, re-download it - as often as you'd like.

The real differences between the Nook and the Kindle are the touch screen, the customer service, and the price and availability of books.

Also the size of the reader - if you want something larger than the Nook/Kindle 2 - your only option is the Kindle DX. B & N doesn't offer anything larger.

I really love my Kindle but I purchased it before the Nook came out so I'm sure there both really nice. I love my kindle though it works great!

Even after all the negative opinions I still find the iPad easier to read on. The sepia setting and the font size are perfect for me.

I do have the M Edge cover for my Kindle and I love it! I want the exact same kind for my iPad. I looked at the MEdge website and saw lots of cases I liked.

I just got a Nook and love it! I compared the Kindle and Nook and feel very good about my purchase. However, if someone had given me a Kindle as a gift, I would have been thrilled also. The deciding factor for me was the library lending ability on Nook. Of course my library doesn't offer it...YET. I am hoping we get it soon though!

I have both the Kindle and the Nook.

I like the Kindle's interface better - I find it easier to search and appreciate the "...looked at this book, also looked at..." feature. It leads to options I wouldn't have considered. They also include their "Recommended for You" on the front page of the store.

I like the availability of the books on the Nook. I check both sites for the cheapest when a book is available on Amazon & B&N.

I like how you can change the font (not just the size) on the Nook.

The Nook is slower to start up and its a little trickier to search (especially typing on the itty bitty touch screen).

The Nooks battery life is not nearly as long as my Kindle's - even on airport mode the Nook only lasts 1/2 as long as the Kindle (not that charging it up is any great hardship).

I like the Nook's cover (I got the magnetic tripod) because it can be "hands free" perched on my tummy while laying down.

I don't use the Internet feature on either - that's what my MacBook is for.

I don't have to update software on the Kindle (not even sure there are updates) but I have to do it on the Nook.

I like the Nook's "Library" better - you can see all your books in one place sorted by author, title or newest. The books 'on' the nook appear in black font while the archived items appear in gray font. The Kindle lets you see everything that's 'on' it, also by author, title or newest, but you have to view the archived items separately and only by title and author - and the sorting is interesting - sometimes by first name, sometimes by last.

I have a gen 1 Kindle and I adore it. I'm sure if I had a Nook, it would also have been equally adored. There are pros and cons to each that both pretty much make them even.

I have an iPad but would never read for any period of time on it. I suffer from computer eye strain and the iPad just makes it worse. It's also WAY too heavy for me to hold for more than a few minutes.

I have a Kindle that I adore. I've never had a problem finding books for it - I probably purchase from amazon 1/4 of the time; the rest of the time it's from sites like fictionwise, omnilit, smashwords, etc - I have Calibre on my pc, so converting various file types to MOBI (Kindle format) is a breeze; I haven't searched for a single book thus far that I haven't been able to download directly or convert it so that I can. I've tried out the Nook at B&N several times, and I vastly prefer my Kindle (not a fan of touch screen lol). Also, amazon is doing an upgrade really soon that is supposed to enable on-device organization as well as improved font features.

I've seen the Nook vs Kindle discussion many places, and it seems like Nook owners swear the Nook is best while Kindle owners swear the Kindle is best. Based on that, I'd say you can't go wrong with either one. ;-) Borders is supposed to start selling an ereader (Kobo $149 - lacks functionality that I find important... like a keyboard) and ebooks soon. Supposedly their ebooks will be available in a variety of formats, but I haven't seen specifics on that.

I had no choice (my kindle and books are a company benefit) but I absolutely love the device. I love that it fits into my handbag, especially when travelling, and I love the speed. My favorite part is the battery life. I just got back from 12 days in China and never had to charge it.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I am leaning towards the Kindle right now. I don't think I need the extra memory space, and I use Amazon all the time for other shopping.

I don't know how I survived without it! I went to B & N this past weekend and the sales person gave me the "speel" about all the Nook has to offer, I told him I had a kindle.....I felt they had "glammed" up the Nook to make it sound more impressive with stuff that really wasn't necessary...I still love my kindle and if given the choice again....would buy another Kindle!!

my only complaint about the kindle is that they have been unable to negotiate a deal with penguin publishing. They want to over charge people for their books and seem to be trying to start a war with amazon because they actually charge kindle users more money than the paper back copies of their books. It is ridiculous. I dont know why they are being so difficult. Some kindle users are even proposing a boycot against all penguin books.
