Goodness...

When did the prices for Nook downloads go up so much? A few examples..

Bush's new book ... other day $10 now $28
Girl with dragon tatoo .. other day $5 now $10
Hornets nest ... other day $10 now $15

Kindle seems to still be the same as always. We have both the Kindle and Nook but with them jumping so much I am sure we will only buy downloads for the Kindle and use the nook mainly for the free checkouts from the library.

IME they go up and down daily, so if there's something you want at a cheap price put it on your wish list, then check your wish list before you buy......when I buy I buy from the wish list I always get the price I put it on my list at. Does that make sense? If I put a book on my wish list at $5 when I buy it it's still $5 even if the price has gone up on the Nookbook page.

I noticed the same thing and find it upsetting. I just got a Nook for Christmas and like it but if I had known there would be such a difference in prices for the book I certainly would have gotten a Kindle:sad2:

Publishers will briefly drop the price of there books in order to move them up on the website's bestseller list. You see this when a book is first introduced or on a previous book by an author who has written a just-released book. Ive seen the same thing happen on amazon so its not just a nook thing.

That's good to know. I am fairly indecisive and so it took me some time to commit to which ereader to get. My husband said if I wanted one at all I needed to pick one. I chose the nook and then this happened. I thought I seriously made the wrong choice. I hope not!

Google and download the scripts to remove the DRM encryption from the Kindle books. I do this all the time. Then, I can change them over to ePub format and upload them to the Nook. I buy wherever it is cheaper.

I don't know about the Nook, but in the Kindle store The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest have both been on sale for $5.00 for the past week or so. That isn't their usual price, so I wouldn't be surprised if the price went back up sometime soon. Maybe they were also discounted for the Nook and have already reverted to their usual prices. I monitor a few of the blogs about discounted books and freebies for the Kindle and they also cover Nook books, and lately I've noticed the same books tend to be on sale or free for both e-readers either at the same time or within a few days of each other.

Wow. That is pretty drastic. Those $5 were a price match to the specials that Borders was running so I'm not surprised to see those return higher.

The Bush book I believe is still $9.99 everywhere else I think. Its not an Agency priced book so it isn't a Publisher move.

You could buy it at Kobo for $9.99 and then use the code FBREADING for another 35% off to make the final price $6.49.

I wonder if the Barnes website is just in a flux from their traffic problems last week because they sure aren't going to do real well if they don't remain at prices similar to the other major players.

I price shop too and use Calibre to back up and convert to my best format.

Stupid question...you can read a Kobo book on a Nook?

I paid $5.50 for the Kindle version of Dragon Tattoo back on 4/5/10. I do not think the current price is going to change that much.

You might try using www.inkmesh.com to price-compare for you, assuming that you want to purchase books rather than relying on a library Overdrive service. (I don't buy anything other than reference works; for leisure reading I just use the two library systems that I have access to. That has been my rule for hardcopy books for quite a while as well; less clutter in both senses of the word.)

Kobo and Sony both use ePub, so their books work on Nook without any conversion at all.

Borders has the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo for $5.20 (I didn't check the others). Borders books should work on the Nook - you just have to sideload them. That's one advantage of the Nook - you can purchase from a variety of stores, you aren't locked into Barnes and Noble.

I got the color Nook for Christmas and am debating returning it. I have never paid for a book! I use the library. I got on their hold list for new releases and usually get one fairly fast. They also have a 7 day check out on new books which means the turnover is much quicker.

This price thing isn't exclusive to Nook's, Amazon raises and lowers Kindle prices as well. I checked into it after DBF gave me the Nook. I rarely pay full price for my Nook books, I either get them for FREE or for under $5. You just have to check the site regularly.

So, I assume the opposite is also true? Nook and Sony can be read on Kobo?

I just got a Kobo from dh for Christmas, so this thread is AWESOME! Thanks everyone!:worship::thumbsup2

This is why I got the Nook instead of the Kindle..I borrow from the library.

No - you can't put eBooks purchased from Barnes and Noble (nook) on a Kobo. Barnes has their own DRM standard which so far hasn't been integrated into the regular ADE package. Adobe keeps saying that it will be but so far nothing. So while Kobo, Sony, Borders etc can go onto a nook, NOT the reverse.

On a Kobo you can put Adobe Digital Editions ePub

Kobo, Borders, BooksOnBoard, Sony, Diesel and a myriad of other smaller stores.

Confusing, I know.

Oi vey. lol...So basically, I need to look for the epub format, right? I already found out I can download from our library system, which is great, but demand seems to be outstripping supply so far. I was only able to download two, added 3 to a wait list, and the rest on a wishlist.:confused3
