Nook Color or Kindle Fire

Got the Nook Color for Christmas and I'm loving it. Got it "rooted" so I can access Android apps.

I too got the Nook color for Christmas. Very easy to set up and navigate. Have bought a book already, and I'm really enjoy using it.

What would you use it for?

What formats of ebooks do you want to use/support?

Will you be getting content from strictly one provider or many?

What would be your primary purpose for this device?

How close are you to a Barnes and Noble? and/or Are you comfortable working "solo" via Amazon?

I had the same delimma this Christmas. My first gen Nook was breaking down and I wanted a new ereader. My son (17) was also reading all types of material -mostly classics- off his tiny phone screen.

My son likes to root or mod things. He's done it with PC's, Xboxes and other systems. I knew that he could root the Nook Color and use it as a mini android tablet and not utilize the data on his phone as much. And as I suspected, he did that on 12/26. He now has a mini android tablet that he can use to check his email, play games, use apps and still read. Even if he didn't mod it, he would still use it as an ereader. He gets files from various formats (epub, pdf) so he could use them via the Nook.

However with my Nook, I hardly ever used the sideload option (epub/pdf) and the one hour read in store free option. (In fact, I ran into problems trying to use the read in store feature back in November).

I decided to go with the Kindle Fire. I didn't need the free read in store, the ability for epub or pdf files and could work solo via Amazon. I wanted a substantial item that could do more than just read books. To me it isn't an Ipad Lite, but it is an ereader first to me.

I looked at all the free book options available for both Nook and Amazon. Over a one week period, there seemed to be more options available for Kindles than for Nooks. Now I rely on free material versus paid material so it was important to have a large selection.

I do like that I have utilize the andriod marketplace on the Kindle. I also like that I can rent a book per month (i already did it and finished it). I like that I do have specific Prime benefits- although I'm not sure If I am going to extend it.

After hours of research we went with the Nook tablet. The biggest reasons were the ability to root it and access the Android market as well as the sd card so that we could upgrade the size if needed.

I have the kindle fire and I love it to pieces.

Just a FYI, Overstock.com frequently has refurb Nook Colors for around $129...less if you google around for a coupon. Mine was shipped directly from Barnes & Noble, and other than a refurb sticker it looks brand new and has the same warranty.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but I'm not finding to root process for the Nook Color easy at all. But, you can buy N2A (Nook 2 Android) memory cards on Amazon, etc that makes the process very simple. I already had a blank micro SD card to use though, so I'm trying to do it the cheap way by using my own card.

I have to vote for the Kindle Fire. I have bought 3 of them in the last 2 weeks for 3 of my kids. They LOVE THEM and I am thinking about getting myself one even though I have a desktop and a laptop. I still like the small size and portability of the Fire. I am an Amazon Prime member so there is a great benefit in me buying the Fire. Prime members get free TV and movies and one free book rental every month for free in addition to the free 2 day shipping that Prime members get.

Just FYI... If you have or bought a Square Trade warranty with your device, rooting it voids your warranty.

I got the Nook color. It was cheaper than the Fire and I like that it has a memory card slot. I plan to download movies to watch on the road. I know Kindle has the "cloud", but I want my content to be available even when I don't have a wi-fi connection available. I have been pleased with the internet on the Nook, and the reading experience is nice--love the backlight and easy navigation. I've downloaded a few apps as well, but nothing fantastic(don't want to spend that $$$) I got a refurb from Barnes and Noble's website for $149.

I love my Fire. I have a kindle too..... love Amazon. I have a friend who got one, her husband got one and their daughter. :thumbsup2

I have a Kindle and am considering getting the Fire. If I am not going to play a lot of games on the Fire, is it worth the $199. I can stream movies thru a Roku box. I love reading books on the Kindle and wonder how much else I would on the Fire that would justify the cost.

Thanks
