Nonsmoking request question

I've been reading about people not getting their nonsmoking request. I never dreamed you wouldn't get this request. We've always gotten it at other resorts, but we weren't DVC members. We made the deposit yesterday in fact to become members. If you were a cash paying guest and they didn't have a nonsmoking room you could easily go else where for a non smoking room, but being a DVC member seems like you wouldn't have that option. 4 of the 6 of us have asthema. One night in a smoke room would land my 1 yr. old in the hospital, so this is a huge worry for me now. Do you need doctor verification to list medically necessary? What are the options if you do get a "smokey" room and they say that's all they have?

I also have asthma, and I have never had trouble getting a NS room at DVC because I always make only one request on my reservation, and that is for non-smoking for medical reasons. They will usually work very hard to get medical reasons for requests filled. Now, getting a non-smoking villa is not a guarantee that no-one before you has smoked in the room. This has been a bit of a problem for me as well as folks smoking in the other non-smoking villas in the building and having that smoke drift into our unit through the vents. FYI, the front desk WILL contact people who are smoking in a non-smoking villa to get them to stop, and they will also do everything in their power to clean up the smoke smell if someone has smoked in your unit before you arrived.

To further ease your mind, I always request non-smoking...not for medical reasons, but just because I prefer not to have the smell of stale smoke in my hotel room...and have always gotten it.

I would imagine that if you make the request "non-smoking for medical reasons" you shouldn't have a problem. And if oyu do, then ZI would recommend you immediately not accept the room and go back to check-in & correct it then. Don't take the room, and decide the next day that you don't want to stay.

I have found that when I have had any problems at Disney in a DVC resort (they have been few, and minor), I contact someone immediately upon discovering the problem and take care of it that way. I feel that I get better results.

I also have always received a non-smoking villa. The vast majority of DVC accomodations are non-smoking. Of course that doesn't mean you will always get one. But by reading these boards, you get a false impression of how often a smoking room is given to someone who doesn't want it. Unhappy people post way more than happy people. So first of all, remember that the odds are definitely in your favor.

Do request non-smoking for medical reasons when you make the reservation. Remind the CM at check in that you have a medical request. Try to arrive fairly early in the day. Doing those things are as close to a guarantee as you can get with DVC. If you are one of the unlucky few who find that your non-smoking room has been smoked in, follow Disney Doll's advice about getting it corrected immediately.

Thanks for the reassurance. Non-smoking is the only request I make. View doesn't usually matter nor does most of the other stuff. Yes, I'd have to go back to check in right away. My one year old son has severe reactions to cigarette smoke. He starts wheezing just from smelling it on someone's clothes. Not too many in our family smoke and the few who do won't hold him if they've smoked recently. My sister in law even showers and puts on fresh clothes before she comes over. So knowing that there are other options is a load off my mind.
