Noisy rooms... are they noisy?

Many of you are familiar with my (infamous) list of noisy rooms on Deck 2. I first offered this list over a year ago. Since then, several people have fretted because they could only get rooms in this area and later reported they had no problems with noise.

My question... have you stayed in one of these staterooms? Did you hear noise? Should I consider revising my list so that your room is no longer included?

<font face=Arial size=3><b><i>Are there rooms on Deck 2 that are noisy?</i></b>

<font size=2>I had more than one question about the noise on Deck 2 while I maintained a "<i>Let me answer your questions, 'live' from the Magic</i>" thread on the DIS Boards during our 2001 Magic cruise, so I went down to Deck 2 and did my own evaluation.

First of all, let me state that, for the majority of the rooms, Deck 2 is very quiet and you should have no problem staying there. But there are some zones where staterooms are near loud mechanical equipment (electrical lockers, transformer rooms, a/c equipment rooms, ship's propellers, cargo hatches, etc.).

So with the disclaimer that "your mileage may vary" and that you may be willing to put up with the "dull roar" in exchange for a good fare, these are the rooms that are in noisy zones:

<blockquote><table border=1 cellpadding=10><tr valign=middle><td align=center><font size=2><b>Port</b></td><td align=center><font size=2><b>Starboard</b></td></tr><tr valign=top><td><font size=2><nl><li>2000 - 2004<br><li>2032<br><li>2036 - 2045<br><li>2078 - 2085<br><li>2088 - 2096<br><li>2114 - 2129<br><li>2139 - 2153</nl></td><td><font size=2><nl><li>2500 - 2520<br><li>2534 - 2547<br><li>2586 - 2600<br><li>2626<br><li>2630 - 2653</td></tr></table></blockquote>

Also, on Deck 1, you might want to avoid...

<blockquote><table border=1 cellpadding=10><tr valign=middle><td align=center><font size=2><b>Port</b></td></tr><tr valign=top><td><font size=2><nl><li>1030 - 1037<br><li>1064</nl></td></tr></table></blockquote>

The noise in these zones is not so loud that it would ruin your vacation, but if you are sensitive to noise, you would probably want to consider another room or be sure to bring earplugs to wear when you go to bed.

So what do you think? Should I put this list "on a diet"?

Hi Dave;

We stayed in 2126 the noises we heard were:

- when we docked and they opened the cargo door to unload at Cataway Cay
- when we arrived back at the port the motors turning the ship around to dock.
- an occasional noise from above.
- the last night when they were taking the luggage for the next day.

Opinion: Not loud enough to say it is annoying. In addition the morning arriving back at the port, it was a like a wake up call, since we have to be up early anyway!!! We liked the closeness to the elevators and the lack of traffic, or it seems to be, to get to the upper decks. In fact we just booked for the same room.

Hope this helps!!!!

Dave,

Hope you are well.

Do you track information on rooms across the hall from laundry areas? Our friends were in the room across the hall from the laundry (Deck 6 Starboard) and had to endure a lot of noise and traffic. At one point I walked down the hall and three people were in the laundry (talking), with machines going, and a woman was sitting in the hallway with her legs across the doorway of our friends room. You know how small the laundry space is - not too big.

Also, when their door was open to chat, the heat & humidity from the laundry room steamed up their mirrors and verandah glass.

This was on the June 22 Western Cruise. Just wondering. Take Care!

Hi Dave,
Keep room #2594 on your list. Although we didn't sleep in that room, that was one of the three rooms we were in on our 5/11 cruise. Due to the problem we had in 2612.

That room really shakes, rattles and vibrates. We went to that room to shower and my 6 yr old DD was afraid to be in there cause as she said it was spooky. The connecting door shakes and makes noise and the large vent on the ceiling ( I guess the a/c return) was rattling big time.

i don't know about deck 2, but we were warned in advance by several people (including Barb) that our stateroom would be noisy because it's right below the bandstage on deck 9.....
welll it's true there's noise from the bandstage.....and there's also noise from the deck itself (chairs and feet) but it wasn't enough to make us not take that stateroom again (8534)......
it was a gorgeous room with a wonderful layout.....
oddly enough i was the only one of the 4 of us woken by the noise during the night......my very light sleeping daughter wasn't bothered......and i was happy to be woken as it was just in time to see us coming into port canaveral (at 4:30 or 5 in the morning)......

but if you go to bed early i suppose you might want to avoid it due to the deck parties...

Dave,
Thank you for coming up with the noisy cabin list in the first place and thank you for starting this thread to clarify the problems! It is very interesting for those of us booked in Deck 2 cabins!!! We will be in cabins 2622 and 2624 (connecting cabins but we will be in both of them so the noise through the thin door will be our own :p ). Our cabins are not on the list, but it's still nice to hear the comments.

Ooh. We're booked directly across the hall in 2094 for October. I really hope it's not a mirror-image sort of thing. :(

Dave, your list is a public service! I constantly refer people to it when they email me about staterooms.
I think a lot of it has to do with the schedule you keep. My friend Julie was in the stateroom below the Goofy Pool stage...she has a young daughter, and it was very disturbing for them. For a couple without kids like Tony and I, or for people who would be up at the party anyway, it wouldn't matter so much because we'd be up there dancing till the wee hours (half the time I'm so exhausted on the cruise that it would take a nuclear bomb to prevent me from sleeping anyway!).
Also, at least for me, the type of noise makes a lot of difference. I am very distubred by hallway noise (people running down the halls, talking, etc.), and that will keep me away. However, engine noise and vibration (which drives some people crazy) lulls me right to sleep. I once read a trip report about people who were in stateroom 5650 and hated it, mainly because they could hear the engines. For me, that is one of its many pluses (and of course there is minimal hallway noise because it is so far off the beaten track).
And then there can be the extra noise in an adjoiner if you are next to the Kickboxer Family or their relatives!
Oh well, enough babbled from me about staterooms. No matter where I am, I'm just glad to be on that ship!! (Well, maybe with the exception of stateroom 2626, ha ha!).

Dave,

We recently returned after staying in room 2590. At first we didn't hear any real noises. I said to my better half as we were leaving St. Thomas that the cabin wasn't nosy. Well... that night it started. It sounded as though they were compacting trash late at night. We could hear the machinery and the sound of breaking/crushing glass bottles. It wasn't that bad and it only lasted for a short time. We heard it to say "What was that" then plopped back to sleep. I don't think the noise was coming from the utility type room across the corridor from us. We asked what was below us and they indicated it was the galley. I am not 100% sure I believe that based on the sound.

Would I book that cabin again? Probably. Now that we know what the cabin is like, I would go for the known.

Something we observed/heard when we walked the ship is; In the corridors aft on deck 5 were extremely noisy. The utility rooms were screaming. Enough so that we turned to each other and asked how people could sleep. Another observation is the areas where the washing machines are were noisy due to the volume of people and the heat and humidity was pretty thick. I would assume this is only during peak times when we walked by.

Final note for 2590. We liked it because it was towards the center of the ship. When it was rough, we barely felt anything in the room. We could watch the white caps pass the window and then look at the cocktails and they weren't even moving. :D

Thanks for your tips as well.

If you have any thoughts below that area of the ship, I would be interested in knowing.

We were in 1064 on 5/23..... It was very noisy. A lot of engine noise and creaking. When the seas was rough it was even worse. I think that if they oiled the berth and tightened up a few screws it wouldn't be that bad.

We have stayed in room 2519 and had no problems. You could hear some music from above, but it just lulled me to sleep. Hubby and I alway's carry a fan where ever we go and that blocks out most noises. I sleep amazingly wonderful when cruising even when we were in rough seas. I just rolled with the Ship and held on tight to Hubby. Ha Ha....:)

Okay, based on this feedback I think I'll take 2088 - 2092 off the list.

1064, 2126, 2519, 2590, 2594, and 2626 will stay on the list.

I'll add the rooms across from the laundry rooms. I believe those are 2096, 6588, and 7596. (2096 was already on the list.)

Thanks for your responses. Does anyone else have any feedback?

Anybody have any scoop on 2581? That is the room we will be staying in.

Thanks

Hi Dave! I have a question about the laundry room. You said 6588 is across from it. Is there only a door on that side? I'm trying to find out what else is in that grey area on the deck plan. I think we are in 6094, which is on the other side of the ship, but across from the same mysterious gray box!

Thank you for the helpful info!

The various grey areas can be service elevators, housekeeping storage closets, and exhaust stacks. I'm not sure, but I think 6094 is across from the stacks.

I think that area is gray on all the decks. Well, if it's noisy, I'll let you know, and you can add it to the list :D

Now, if you had a list of cabins that are really far from elevators or stairs, that would be one, right?

My DD & I stayed in 2047 July 4, 2002. The room was fine except around 11:00 p.m. Then every few minutes I heard the very loud thumping of the music upstairs. It wouldn't have bothered me if I wasn't trying to fall asleep!

We were in 2037 and had no problems except when docking. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop at night. We were usually up and about on the mornings the ship docked so that wasn't a problem for us and besides it didn't last long. Thanks for the wonderful job you do keeping us updated on everything about the DCL.
