Our school system is only off 3 days in February (12th, 13th & 16th) so DS had his Valentine's Party today after recess. He is in 5th grade and this is his last year of elementary school. In middle school and high school they don't have "parties" so I was expecting everyone to participate. WRONG . . .

Out of 22 children, only 6 (including my son) wrote Valentine's. Only myself, the room mother and another mom brought in food.

I can only imagine how the kids who didn't write out Valentines felt when those 6 kids were handing out theirs. It was kind of pointless if nobody was going to participate. It wasn't even really a fun party . . I don't get it.

That's kinda sad....Tonight I helped the little girl I used to babysit for do her cards and lollipops for the class. She had to do 40! How sad would she be if she only got 6?

Come to think of it, DS didn't ask for cards for the class this year. Huh! I'll have to ask him about it tomorrow morning. I bet since they're in the other building with the higher grades now, 5th graders don't do it. He's off Friday and Monday.

Well I'll make up for all of them. I'm 30, and I'm giving Valentines to everyone at work! (little baggies filled with candy)

My fifth grader is still undecided if he will take Valentines - doesn't know if it's cool or not. He said in 4th grade everyone but about 2 people brought Valentines. His teacher is male and doesn't really think about parties much (this seems to be true of all the 5th grade teachers at my kid's school). I ran into him today and told him my son's dilema. He said he'd tell the kids tomorrow that they could bring cards and/or treats in if they want to. Hopefully that will generate enough discussion for the kids to know what others are doing. I'll bake cookies (just choc chip - no hearts or pink stuff!) for him to take in.

All the younger classes do them - 5th grade is the first time we've run into no planned parties.

My two daughters happily prepared their valentines. My older one is in 3rd grade. They will have a party tomorrow. A note came home (always does) saying that if the children brought in cards they had to do it for everyone.

My younger daughter was also very excited because she is in kindergarten and this is her first year celebrating Valentine's day. She went to a Jewish preschool and they didn't celebrate Valentine's Day.

The 5th grade in our school sells heart shaped lollipops as a fund raiser for Valentine's day. The kids get such a kick out of it.

I think by 5th grade most of the kids are "too cool" for Valentines day, of course, unless they have a special someone.

My yongest is in a 5th/6th grade class and hasn't mentioned anything about Valentines so far.

My son is in second grade and a note came home from the teacher. If the child chooses to participate he/she needed to include one for every class member. They will have a small party on Friday and all week the student council has been selling candy grams and singing telegrams. (BTW the school is k-7).

Hate to say it but 3rd grade starts the lack of parties in my district.

Nope, no parties after the 2nd grade!

They can exchange valentines but not duirng instructional time (probably close to the end of day).
