No Work and All Play – Disney on the Company’s Dime! (8/1 There and Back Again)

I don't think I've seen the Soarin PP (Not FP - LOL!) before. I am putting that on my September list! Love it!

Now tell me about walking counter clockwise to see the lights? I've never heard of that.

The Soarin' Magic Shot is our favorite.
They usually have it behind Spaceship Earth but you usually have to ask for it.

As for the nighttime lights, here's the idea:
After Illuminations, as the crowd charges towards the entrance, do the opposite.
Starting in Canada, walk around the World Showcase and check out the pavillions at night (and empty).
At night, the lights give the pavillions a different feel and the old Tapesty of Nations music is playing.
By the time you get all the away around to Mexico, the crowds have dispersed and you can head out of the park leisurely.

Awesome Photopass pictures :thumbsup2

I  the new Snow White boarder !

We, really love the Soarin shot also , even though I'm unable to ride the ride . DS6 got the Soarin Magic Shot last year and it turned out adorable !

Yeah, the border is a nice new touch.
I wonder if more of those are on the way... :confused3

Great idea. I am Doing this next trip! Love it!

Okay, so we saw Toy Story 3 this weekend.
We opted not to do 3-D since my little DS3 plays with the glasses too much.
Either way, it was a great movie and we loved it.
A perfect cap to the triology - part humor, part prison break.
And lots of nods to the original Toy Story as well as the other Pixar films.
Anyone notice the number of the train? ;)
Or Andy's license plate number?
The one thing I couldn't find was the Pizza Planet truck which appears in every Pixar movie.

But those 10 minutes towards the end...
My wife and my DS8 were sobbing uncontrollably.
I even got a little teary-eyed.
And my son couldn't stop crying until well after we got home.
I think he relates to Andy and has thought about what's going to happen to his precious "friends" when he grows up.
Pixar definitely tugged at your heart strings in this one.

And then I realized that we might see Lotso when we go in January.
I originally was psyched for a new Meet and Greet.
Now I want to go meet him and punch him instead of hug him.
I think we've decided that if he's still there, we will pose either with swords pointed at his head or shaking our heads in disgust...

The scene where Lotso, Big Baby and Chuckles have been abandoned and are hitching a ride on the back of a truck in the rain on the way to Sunnyside Daycare....that's the pizza planet truck. :goodvibes

But totally agree, it was one of the best Pixar films to date, absolutely incredible.

hey Mike, sorry about being MIA for a spell. We had a conference in Kyrgyzstan to go to, then my idiot dog bit my hand, badly. Just now able to type again.

Anyway, I'll pick it up from here....

TS3 is on my list to see, along with Alice, and Avatar- all of which we've missed out on. I guess seeing them 3D is not an option anymore?

Only 9 weeks away from the Meet in DC. Did you and your family think more about coming- at least for maybe even just lunch or dinner?? We'd sure love to have you come out! I know that Jenb1023 is probably bringing her daughter as well- I know that was a concern of yours. Hope you 5 are doing well :)

Glad you all enjoyed the movie :)

I caught the 95 on the train but don't recall noticing Andy's license plate.

I totally relate to Stacy's tears as I was sobbing myself. It was a very moving ending!

As for meeting Lotso, after seeing the movie I can't figure out why they picked him. Personally, I'd have preferred they kept the lovable gang from Up over him.

We have done this and it is great. However if you choose to get a Grey Goose Slushie (or 2) to sip while you watch Illuminations then this walk turns into a very interesting adventure. :cool1:

Not that I have any first hand experience with this..I am just saying ;)

Ah - good catch. Totally missed that one...

Not a problem.
As for the DC Meet, honestly we haven't been thinking about it.
With my new job kicking in and finishing up Spring sports, we've been really busy.
We'll have to start figuring out the logistics for the meet...

Glad you all enjoyed the movie :)

Andy's license plate is A113 - the number of the room at Cal Tech where alot of the Pixar guys had their animation class.
And I have no idea why they would have Lotso.
They should do Ken and Barbie or Mr. Pricklepants or someone likeable.
I mean I'd rather meet the Disney Villains than Lotso...

Are we have psychadelic experiences now? :hippie:

What to do? What to do?
I decided to head towards the Land.
While Soarin’ was most likely “Sold Out”, I did not ride Living with the Land earlier in the morning.
To my dismay, after walking all the way over there and down the stairs and over to the corner, the CM told me the ride was closed.
There goes that idea.

I headed back out and checked the futuristic times board and something “launched” out at me.
So across the park I went through the Fountain of Nations plaza.
And there I ran into yet another old friend made of flowers.
I thought this one was really well done.
“My Name Stitch!”
IOUG2009732.jpg

Next to Stitch was an interesting display of really large flowers.
IOUG2009733.jpg

But beyond both was my destination – Mission: Space.
This morning was my first ride on this attraction and I rather enjoyed it.
And now the wait time for the “wimpy” side was 5 minutes.
Can’t beat that.
Before entering, I stopped for some additional pictures.
Our destination, the red planet Mars
IOUG2009734.jpg

And then the stereotypical Mission: Space shot.
IOUG2009735.jpg

I headed for the opening and my experience began once again.
Welcome to the International Space Training Center Flight Training Program
IOUG2009736.jpg

Inside I was excited to discover the Training Center was "Celebrating Pioneers in Space."
I figure since I was already on an X-2 mission, this celebration must be for me, right? :confused3
IOUG2009737.jpg

With some experience under my belt, I was going to ace this simulator test.
Prepping for take-off, I checked out the large structure showing life in space.
Look closely at the center of the structure and you can see a tribute to the previous pavilion.
Each attraction in Future World was given a circular icon representing it.
Horizon’s icon looked like this:
HorizonsLogo.jpg

Now let’s check out the center of the structure in Mission: Space.
See anything familiar?
IOUG2009739a.jpg

After my discovery, I traded my Green Team ticket in for a spot in an X-2.
Today I would be the Commander. However, my X-2 was empty so apparently I was only the boss of myself.
However, I must say, I performed my responsibilities admirably as my shuttle landed safely on Mars.
I think I deserve a commendation for that – 1st successful solo flight to Mars!!

After my simulation and lack of fanfare (they don’t know talent when they see it apparently), I headed back into FutureWorld.
There was another “space” adventure on my agenda.
Come along on a grand and miraculous spaceship sailing through the universe of time!

Nice update :thumbsup2 Great pictures of the F&G Festival and Mission Space ! Sounds like you found Mission Space to be a new fav of yours ?

Can't wait to hear about your next mission in space popcorn::popcorn::

I definitely had a blast on Mission: Space and made it a top attraction to do with the kids on our return trip.
Granted, I stuck with the Green Team but it's just another simulator like Star Tours with the added fun of pushing buttons and flipping switches!
And with no lines in the afternoons and a great play place for the little ones, it's definitely a must-do!

That stitch topiary is so cool. It looks huge!

I love your inside pictures of Mission Space. I don't think I would like being in the capsule myself. I always get too nervous to take pics in the queue. Next time!!! LOL - I always say that!

I liked the Stitch topiary as well.
I believe it moves every year.
As for Mission: Space, it's a fun ride.
And like I said, I stick with the "wimpy" version and go Green Team!

How can one visit Epcot and not take the almost mandatory trip on the legendary icon itself?
Spaceship Earth is always a favorite and something we leave towards the end of the day.
Rather than rushing to it first thing, we tend to use it as our good-bye to Epcot.
I wasn’t quite ready to leave this time around but I thought it was a good time to travel through the universe of time!

I like the new updates – especially the “Bill Gates” clone in the garage hacking on a computer.
I always tell the little ones that that’s me back in college. :goodvibes

And I actually don’t mind the interactive cartoon on the way down.
I think it’s fun and entertaining for the kids.
They got a kick out of it last time we were here.
This time, however, it was all me.
So, of course, I had to make a silly face on the way up to make my video that much more interesting.
Check out my adventures:

I love the fact that you can email this entire video to yourself afterwards.
It makes it so much easier to post on your trip report! :lmao:
And for the record, if you go solo, your partner is just the cartoon.
I think it would've been more fun if it was just me but what can you do?

Anyway, After arriving back in the present, I searched for my location on the globe.
There I was making the same silly face:
IOUG2009747.jpg

I was even able to catch a “vacation picture” from my underwater adventure!
IOUG2009748.jpg

I hung out a bit afterwards playing in Project Tomorrow.
IOUG2009752.jpg

I had never really explored this section before.
The virtual body parts were intriguing but the race car game seemed the most fun.
I actually took video of it to show the kids back home.
Maybe next time we’ll stop and “smell the roses” in here giving them a chance to explore.

Back outside in the heat, I decided some refreshments were in order.
So I headed here:
IOUG2009753.jpg

I heard that the Fountain View was a great place for ice cream and I wasn’t disappointed.
My mint chocolate chip cone was a delight on this insanely hot day.
The only downside was the rate at which it was melting.
After devouring my treat, I decided I had time for one more attraction before the night’s finale.
So I headed back to Mission: Space which, once again had no line.
Three times in one day may be excessive, but since I had never done it before, I was really enjoying it!
And this time, I was able to snag some nighttime photos.
First the stereotypical outside shot:
IOUG2009755.jpg

And then one with the moon!
IOUG2009754.jpg

Inside I grabbed my wimpy Green Ticket once again…
IOUG2009761.jpg

And since it was basically empty, I was able to get a shot of this with no one around.
It’s the spacesuits used in the the Gary Sinise movie “Mission to Mars”
IOUG2009762.jpg

Right before lift-off, a Dad and his son joined me for my 3rd trip to Mars.
He was a little frightened and asked what happens if he forgets to push a button.
So, the Dad and I had fun with him.
“Why, we’ll crash of course.”
“No – really Dad.”
“Yup” I said. “I was just on this and you have to make sure you push the buttons exactly when directed to.”
Now the little one was psyched up as this attraction now had new meaning to him.
He was assigned to be our Commander so the Dad and I made lots of comments to him about being in charge and how he controlled our destiny.
The attraction was fun once again and when we landed, we congratulated our commander on his fine techniques and ability.
Although we told him he cut it a little close at the end there! :rotfl:

With that, we exited and headed back to the World Showcase Lagoon.
And here, once again, is one of the benefits of travelling solo.
It was 8:50 and I wandered right up the center of the lagoon and there was enough room for just one person.
I asked the family that was there if they had room for one more and they gladly welcomed me!
We chatted for some time until the finale started but I never would’ve gotten a spot if I wasn’t solo.
The lights went dark and Illuminations: Reflections of Earth began.

Now, I may get screamed at for this, but I honestly was disappointed.
I hadn’t seen this in some time since my kids couldn’t hack a 9:00 fireworks show so we’ve bailed early in our previous visits.
That’s why this was a must do on my solo excursion.
But I guess I built it up in my head because it was not the same.
First of all, I miss the Tapestry of Nations Parade.
Secondly, the fireworks are good but that whole sequence in the middle with the scenes on the Earth in the center of the lagoon are well, slow.
My kids would be bored out of their minds.
I think I’d rather see Wishes! or Fantasmic! than this one.
Like I said, a let down.
And now, I shall let the bashing begin from all of you Illuminations-lovers.

In the meantime, any guesses on how I topped the evening off?

I like the pics from SE. We managed to miss it on both our Epcot days in March :sad2: so it's a "must do" for August!

Sounds like you had a lot of fun with the father and son who joined you on your space mission.

We've never had a good view of Illuminations so I don't really have an opinion on it but from what I've heard I would agree that it's probably the least "kid friendly" of the nighttime shows.

CS in Japan sounds like the perfect place to go if you need a break from crowds; really peaceful and pretty!

Love that your son found a hidden Mickey in Cheesecake Factory! :thumbsup2

I would love to hear what people were whispering when they realized you were there to see Snow White alone! :lmao:

Can't wait to see how you pose with Lotso in January! :scared1: :rotfl2:

I agree with you about Illuminations... :rolleyes1

In the meantime, any guesses on how I topped the evening off?

More PP pics? :confused3

Beautifully awesome pictures of Mission Space in the dusk. So pretty!

Sorry you did not like Illuminations. I do enjoy it, but I think a lot has to do with your vantage point. I also wish there were more fireworks - call me picky! Truth be told - I probably do like Wishes better!
