Smoking baby reportedly has quit

The tubby Indonesian toddler who caused a sensation last spring by enthusiastically puffing on cigarettes in a widely viewed video has quit smoking, according to media reports.

Two-year-old Ardi Rizal of South Sumatra, who reportedly smoked 40 cigarettes a day, has broken his nicotine addiction through a 30-day rehabilitation program, the Jakarta Globe reported Thursday.

"He has stopped smoking and doesn't ask for cigarettes anymore," Arist Merdeka Sirait, chairman of Indonesia's National Commission on Child Protection, said, according to another publication, Earth Times.According to earlier reports, the child was placed in state custody after the video emerged and the boy’s parents said he would cry and throw tantrums if he went too long without smoking a cigarette.

Heavy smoking appeared to have caused the boy’s brain to shrink and could cause other health problems later, Sirait said, according to Earth Times.

"He needs to be in a smoking-free environment so that he doesn't start smoking again," Sirait said.

Anti-smoking advocates say Indonesia’s tobacco industry markets its products to children, according to the Globe.

How does a 2-year old develop a smoking habit, nay addiction? It had to be in process for some time, say at least a year. This of course means someone else, likely a relative, set up the child in order to gain fame and make some money off it.
I'd say find and prosecute this person fully.

Well, I was at a theme park yesterday and saw a very pregnant woman (no she wasn't pooh sized) smoking. I guess that is how a 2 year old develops a habit.:sad2:

If I remember right it was the dad.

OK I can get the addiction part, but what about enablement? I mean, he isn't exactly driving to the 7-11 now, is he? How do the adults know he's nicotine-addicted when he's born? Did he reach for the Marlboros as opposed to his mommy's chest? Can you get a mental picture of that?

"Hey, let's get him a smoke. He looks like he needs one!"

Although sad, that is doubtful. There is no way for an infant to commicate the need for a smoke. So the addiction (if any) would be gone by the time the child reached the age to be able to communicate.

As for it taking a year to develop the addiction, not necessarily. I was a teen and developed the habit much, much sooner than that and the addiction fairly close afterwards.

The parents had to be enabling him to give him the cigerrettes, lighting them and all of it. Actually they would have had to show him how to smoke the thing. So they were doing more than just enabling him, its almost on the bridge of forcing him.

My point exactly. There is a victim here, and where there is a victim there is a perpetrator.

I wasn't being serious. I was disgusted by that mother just as I am disgusted by this child's parents.

I saw this on the evening news today and I was like wth!!! This is insane and he was holding the cigerette like an adult.

Sorry, my bad. I agree it is sad to see a pregnant mother smoking. I don't understand what part some women do not get about what goes in their body goes into their unborn baby.

Ugh, I remember that story. That little dude was handling his smokes like a seasoned truck driver. If it's true he's stopped, I'm very, very glad. Hope it's for his lifetime. Sad that it's probably already done damage.
