Is there anything you can do for GAD if there are no volunteer opportunities available in your area? I was wondering if any of the organizations have a national project (like Project Linus) that would accept donations from anyplace. How would I find this?

Go to the GAD site and type in Norman IL. You'll find several that can be done at home and mailed. I did the book drive for the USO, but there are also Project Linus and Haiti Care Kit opportunities. There was NOTHING within an hour from me, and 1 1/2 hours if I wanted my kids to participate. The book drive was fun, and I got my vouchers within a few days of mailing the books-did not have to wait for the books to make it all the way to Qatar!

I stumbled across this at the bottom of the GAD search results page (in a blue box):
"Not finding enough opportunities? Try broadening your search. Select ALL interest areas.
Click here for information for HandsOn Network partner organizations you can contact that will have additional qualifying opportunities. "

When you "click here" a new list comes up. I was able to find a Project Linus chapter 30 minutes away opposed to 2 hours.

Good Luck!:goodvibes

Try searching Project Linus in Manchester, CT. I will be mailing ours in on Thursday. They emailed me right back and no problem mailing them in.
Blankets can be any size/color. I found a great deal on the no sew fleece kits through Oriental Trading.

Salem MA has a blanket project (I think it is called Binky Project)
zip 01970

I am thinking of completing the book drive/donation activity. When I tried the link to the usps for the customs form it didn't work. When I manually typed in the URL I'm not sure which form to print out. Which one did you use? THANKS for the informationon the book drive.

You are welcome.:goodvibes

I don't remember which one - I went from the link they gave. But I do know the postmaster told me that no one else had ever brought forms with them, and they usually do the forms there. So you can just get them at your post office.

What zip code did you put in? I entered the Bangor zip and got a few. I actually just got my vouchers this morning. I got together a basket of things for a newborn. It cost me a few bucks but I still made out in the end. One basket is good for two vouchers. The contact person lives in Hermon.

Thanks, I was able to print out the forms, now I just need the address to send the books to. I emailed the contact person two days ago but I haven;t heard back from her yet. How long did it take for them to get back to you? THANKS again! :)

I emailed her 3 times, and always heard back from her by the next day. I think I would email again! They may be like some of the other places and getting swamped with volunteers right now!

I'm glad I could help!

Thanks, Winterman, for the info. There are quite a few more listed using the Bangor zip code. I think we'll probably do the newborn basket too, and it's a 2-for-1!
