No upgrades since online check in coincidence?

It really does depend less on how you check in and more on what the resort needs to do to fill the rooms. It's like a big game of Tetris - they want to fill every room possible. Sometimes there could be an overbooking of one category and an underbooking of another, so people get moved around (this can also result in downgrades, although they try not to do that). Sometimes there might be a nice suite that MUST be available on a certain date, so they slot someone in who just happens to be checking out the day the suite is needed for the VIP (this happened to us at CR once - upgrade from a standard view wing room to a suite for a ten day trip - it was great!).

Just because you CAN do online check in doesn't mean you HAVE to do online check in. It's totally optional, and doesn't affect your ability to book FP+ or ADR's. If you feel that by interacting with the front desk CM's you have a better shot at an upgrade (complimentary or paid), then just wait and check in at the front desk.

I have been upgraded since doing online checkin - once from POR to Club Level at the Grand Floridian (that was some surprise!), another time from a standard room at POR to a Royal Room, and from a standard room at the Beach Club to a Club Level Room there.

Prior to that I only remember one upgrade from a standard view room at POR to a garden view room.

I did online check in last year when we stayed at Saratoga Springs. I booked a studio, but when we opened our room I was upgraded to a one bedroom suite...totally elated and surprised at the complimentary upgrade!! This was the first major upgrade I have ever had. Wonderful surprise.

I have been upgraded to a 1 bedroom from a studio at The Beach Club villa, to club level at the Yacht Club and to club level at The Polynesian and more I think but none since the magic bands became available so it's been years and I go several times a year
If you think it's because of online check in why are you still doing online check in?

It's coincidence. Funny enough, we had never been upgraded before magic bands, but have been upgraded twice since.

Total luck of the draw.

Total coincidence. I've been upgraded both before and after magic bands and online check in. Most recent upgrade was this past Wednesday when we were upgraded from a standard view to a pool view at AKL. I did online check in for that stay.

I was told upgrades only happen because your room was either having maintenance issues or they had more bookings for a certain type room than they had inventory and had to switch people around.

Exactly! Which is why it is NOT as common as a glance at these boards would lead one to believe.

Because it was just an observation, I am not in the room very long just sleeping and I like the location of a deluxe resort

Well, if you think it matters do an experiment. Stop doing online check in and see if your upgrade luck returns

We did online check in at Caribbean beach last week. I was shocked when I was notified around 11:30 our room was ready and we had been upgraded to a preferred building. I had booked standard water view and requested top floor Martinique. We were given a preferred top floor Martinique room and were thrilled! It was a great start to our vacation!

Technically you booked "Water View" - those can be in any building other than Pirate. So as long as you still had a water view, *technically* it wasn't an upgrade according to the CBR system.

Did you still have a Water View? If so, you didn't get an upgrade. There are no rooms at CBR classified as Preferred Water View. In Martinique 24, 25, 26 and Trinidad North there are 3 Room Types. Preferred, King and Water View rooms. So if you book a Water View or King room you can be placed in any of these buildings that also have Preferred and not have to pay the Preferred prices. :thumbsup2 I only point this out because most people don't know that they can request a room in these buildings if they have a Water View or King room booked.

I had no idea that was possible! Good to know in the future.

Really?! I had no idea I retract what I said above then! Yes we did still receive water view. I assumed Preferred was only given in those rooms if you booked that specifically. I'm really quite surprised they do it that way since it would seem they are missing an opportunity to charge more for preferred water view (since this is Disney we're talking about after all)!

This appears to also run the same at POR
Pretty much all the Mod resorts operate the same. There are various "view" categories, and a Preferred area. But within Preferred, there are no additional categories. Like Pool, Water, Garden, King, etc. So if you book a specific view (or bed) you may get a room in the Preferred building, and you may not. And conversely, you may book Preferred and get a Pool, Garden or even King room in the Preferred area.
