No Turn On Red...what does this mean to you?

It means that unless you are very very busy and very very important you have to wait for the light to change. People do it all the time, we have cameras too and they just don't care. We also have huge signs that say no turn on red with a huge red dot on it, in case you don't know what red looks like

Didn't read all the replies.... But here the "wait for green" sign is at an intersection where traffic coming at you gets a green light first (in conjunction with them getting a green left turn arrow). Basically it's a reminder that even though you see cars starting to move from the other direction, make sure YOUR light is green.

I know this thread is an old one. :)

Pedestrian should have the right of way most of the time. In Washington State you are required to yield to them at any marked crosswalk or any unmarked crosswalk. Still vehicles don't stop for them even when they should.

In Tacoma at least...

A recent accident has caused a lot of discussion about the law, and how it's put into action. And from what I learned, pedestrians have the right of way at an unmarked *once they are in the roadway*. If they are NOT in the roadway, if they are on the sidewalk still, we should NOT stop for them. Especially if there are two or more lanes of traffic each side, because the more middle lane cannot necessarily see what you're stopping for.

And that's what caused the accident. Two middle school kids going to school, at a sidewalk in a neighborhood. Delivery van closest to them stopped. Small car that didn't see the girls past the van went, not knowing why the van was stopped. And he hit the girls. And was NOT found at fault, because the van should not have stopped since the girls weren't in the road. The van was making a decision for other lanes of traffic that didn't go along with the law. If it had been reversed, if it had been a small car stopped and the van hit them, I bet it would be different, since the van was up higher and should have been able to see the girls.

Yesterday we saw something that nearly made me get out of my car to yell at drivers. 2 lanes each side, near a school, kids were already released at half-day so it wasn't 20 mph time (4 hours past the kids getting out). Kids on bikes were at the marked, lighted crosswalk. Waiting until they had the "walk" sign. WE HAD THE GREEN LIGHT. And two cars in front stopped. We had the green light. The kids were waiting, appropriately. This isn't one of the newish crosswalks where you hit a button and it flashes yellow for drivers to stop. This was a proper crossing with red/yellow/green light for the drivers, and the walk/don't walk sign for the pedestrians. The kids were doing it right. Both lanes in front of me stopped. The people on the OTHER side kept going, as well they should, because they had the green light.

And finally the kids caved in and went, before they had their Walk sign, because the wrong wrong wrong drivers pressured them into going.

It was madness.

My car was rear-ended once for this very reason. There were a couple of college kids approaching a crosswalk (but not in it yet). The first car stopped anyway. The second car managed to stop quickly. I was in the third car, and had left enough room that I was able to stop when I saw the second car's brake lights...Unfortunately, the driver behind me hadn't. I felt so bad for the poor kid, because he was "at fault" for the work on my car, but it was really the driver of the first car who started the whole mess. At least nobody was hurt.

No turn on red means NO turn on RED anytime.

However around here it's all about the blinky yellow left turn arrow. Hello there's a sign right next to it that says blinking arrow yield to oncoming traffic. That means you can turn if there's no traffic people.

We just got some of those yellow blinking left turn arrows here. All it seems to cause is confusion.
Hmmm, I could see how it would. :scratchin I've never seen a signal like that and if I encountered one (while out of town or something) I'd need to think for a minute about what it meant and would probably snag up traffic or make an incorrect turn. Here a green flashing arrow is ROW for left hand turns (also know as the "advance phase"). After a minute or two the flashing arrow turns into a solid green which means left-turn allowed but you must yield to on-coming traffic.
Here it actually is legal to make a left turn on red from one one-way street onto another one-way street.
Yes, here too. And nothing is more frustrating than being behind somebody who doesn't know that. I rarely bother honking, because turning left on red is so counter-intuitive that if the person isn't aware of the rule, they wouldn't even know what I was honking about.

This is why I'm glad that 99% of lighted intersections work different in my city (Perth, Australia). Basically all sets of traffic lights have a pedestrian button and generally all directions of traffic will have a red light when pedestrians can cross, and if there is a green light it will never lead traffic towards the pedestrians (the light will only allow you to turn, and only in a direction away from where the pedestrian is crossing). I still get nervous crossing intersections in the States at times, because having a walk signal plus vehicles attempting to turn is something I never have to deal with 11 months in the year!

There was a "no turn on red" sign that was activated only when the elementary school near the intersection was coming & going. I went through that intersection at 7 am every day. Once in a while I would go to work an hour later and get behind someone just sitting, not turning right. Oops! My bad! Of course, I only hit the horn one time when I got close enough to see why they didn't turn. Lesson learned!

The new one in New Jersey is turning LEFT on red.

Driving around on Saturday = taking your live into your own hands.
Oh no, that's a new one. What part of NJ are you in? I'm NW...people are nuts enough around here making lefts from straight or right turn only lanes. One big bumper car game.

OK, my vent for the day....

What exactly does No Turn On Red mean to you guys? To me, it means... No....Turn....On...Red. So why is it that everytime I come to a red light and I am in the right hand lane, 20 buttheads behind me are playing a symphony with their horns???? Am I wrong? I discussed this with coworkers and ya know what one said??? "What that means is, no turn on red if there is traffic coming. If there is no traffic, then you can turn." Duhhhhh, really? Then what is the sign for???? Then what exactly does Wait For Green mean? If you have to wait for green, doesn't that mean no turn on red??? Is it me? Do I have to go back to traffic school???
Those are not bad people....they just rode Mr. Toad's Wild Ride too many times.
