No tricks and all (healthy) treats in OCTOBER with the SUPER GOOFS

Hey Goofs,

I ran a 5K this morning in support of CASA. It was a fun little run that was mostly walkers so my 5th place finish (out of 62) looked a lot more impressive to me than it really was. :lmao:

I finished in 22:53 which was about 1:30 faster than my previous PR. I was feeling pretty good about that until my Garmin informed me the I ran only 2.78 miles instead of 3.1. I still ran a good pace for me but I can't call this a PR. I guess in my log it will need to have an asterisk next to it like my 7.5 mile 10K earlier this year. :thumbsup2

After that, we went to the pumpkin patch with a group of friends and let our little monsters lead us through the corn maze which was a lot of fun.

Tomorrow I've got a 5-mile race on the beach. I've never run more than two miles on the beach and that was only twice so we'll see how I do.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Steve...great job on the 5K. I never check mileage on courses for that exact reason. Some feel longer and some feel short, but I'd rather not know about the shorter ones.

Last week until my first marathon. I did an easy 10 yesterday and it felt pretty good. Add some more rest this week and I should be ready to go. I'm starting to get a little anxious and just want it over with. I also just booked a room at a hotel/water resort near the race so my 3 y/o will enjoy the day before and during the race and we can check out late on Sunday and enjoy the water park some more.

Wow....I have been MIA over here lately!

Todd Glad you enjoyed the W&D. Sounds like it needs a LOT of improvement before next year's edition. I want to give it a tray, but want a good experience too. I actually emailed run Disney with a link to the W&D thread and suggested they take a look at real runner feedback.

Steve How'd your beach race go? I imagine that could be a real challenge.

Jason Good luck with your marathon! I hope you meet all of your race goals (I was going to say "Have a good time", but is it really a good time to run 26.2 miles?!)

Last days before my race on Sunday. One more short run tomorrow. I am cautiously optimistic and the weather looks good. The it's a two-country tango with an "underwater mile" thrown in for fun.

Have fun with that one. Depending on my partner's work schedule, I may try to register at the expo on Saturday.

Realized I never gave my September mileage - 80.91. Nagging injuries and the like kept numbers low.

Maura & Jason - good luck with your races! Be sure to give us a race report afterwards!

Good luck on your race Maura! :cheer2:

It was an easy week for me because this Sunday I'm running a 17 miler. :scared1:

I'll check back in and let the Goofs know if I survived. :lmao:

Have a nice weekend everyone! :grouphug:

Hi Everyone!

I'm finally back from vacation. Actually, we got home Tuesday night, but it's taken me a couple of days to wrap my head around being home and get back into the groove. I wore a pedometer throughout the trip and we ended up going over 120 miles!

We had a great time (as usual)! The weather could not have been more perfect during the entire trip. We didn't have one drop of rain, and there was hardly even a cloud in the sky at all!

I ran the half marathon, too. Saw a lot of wish shirts and met Suzanne! Since it was my first race I have nothing to compare it to, but I have agreed with all of the issues that others have noted, including the complete bust that was the finish line party. Still, all of the negatives must not have affected me too much because I registered for the Princess half last night! I figured that if people thought the W&D was poorly executed by Disney, then I should be in for a treat by running an already well established Disney race. I'm also interested in seeing how a morning race will differ, since I felt pretty bad after the Wine & Dine (there was absolutely no wining or dining for me!).

Overall I really enjoyed myself. I thought I did pretty well for the first 10.5 miles, then ran (ha ha) into some issues for a mile or two. I was surprised that I felt so bad afterward though. It took me a couple of hours to force down a banana, and that was about all I could handle. I had trouble sleeping as well, and woke up a couple of times feeling dizzy and nauseous. Feeling like you have a hangover when you haven't consumed a drop of alcohol is not fair! I woke up again at 7am feeling hungry so I got up and ate some leftover pasta then went back to bed until about 9:30am. By the time I got up then I felt pretty good. Surprisingly, the only part of me that was sore at all was my neck and shoulders, and I think that was only because of trying to wear the medal after the race! I really didn't realize how heavy it would be! I hope they work out some of the problem areas within the next year. I would seriously consider doing this race again.

Good luck to everyone with upcoming races!! Have a great weekend everyone!

Jason - Good luck with your first marathon! Please let us know all about it.

Nicky - Great job finishing the Wine & Dine and congratulations on registering for the Princess Half. I've never run the Princess but I'm sure it's very well-run since they've done it before. Sorry to hear you had a rough night. A boozeless hangover? That's just wrong! ;)

Maura - Best of luck to you too in Detroit. You are a real inspiration! :worship:

I did my 5-mile beach race last weekend. It was brutal! I have run this stretch of beach one-way before as it is the tail end of an 8.75-mile race. I never had much problem before, partially because it was only 2.5 miles and also because the sand was much more firmly packed. This time it was like mud. We immediately all ran toward the water to get near the wet sand but found ourselves sinking and leaving 2-3" footprints. The dry sand was easier to run on but still very difficult.

I was pretty exhausted by the time I got to the turnaround and had to walk several times on the return. I did find one thing that made the run SO much easier since I was in the back of the pack anyway. I ran on the footprints since the sand was already packed down there. I also veered toward the most shallow footprints as the sand wasn't as loose there. It made it a lot easier but I was already so spent. I ended up finishing about 1:30 per minute slower than I would have on pavement but consider it a PR since it was my first true beach race.

In all, it was still fun and turned out to be a nice day. It was also a club race so I have now officially finished enough races to complete the circuit this year and am eligible to win my age group.

I'm running another half marathon tomorrow. This will be my sixth half marathon in six months...and I'm five pounds heavier than when I ran the first one. :confused3

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

-steve

My race report (brief)......great weather (start temp 50F, didn't get past 60 or so, sun, but not too hot)...course was okay (lets just say there is lots of empty in Detroit!)...ran over the bridge into Canada (total congestion at bridge where it narrowed. My slowest mile all race)...along the Detroit River in Windsor, Ontario...back through the tunnel (much harder than the bridge--steeper gradient and warmer temp)....Garmin dropped out during the tunnel, leaving me with a .9 mile gap the rest of the race (sorta made figuring fuel stops and mile markers a little tougher). Run...run....run....Detroit, Indian Village, Belle Isle, River Walk, and finally Lafayette ave. Tired by the end, but stuck with my fuel/hydration plan. Felt MUCH better finishing and during latter race than during the Disney full in January, so that made me feel good. Not too sore now.

So the result? 3:53:34, PR by 15 minutes, Qualified for Boston, and unbelievably finished 2nd in my age group!

Couldn't ask for more.

That is awesome Maura! Congratulations on your finish :thumbsup2

Great job Maura! You would probably have beaten your PR by another minute had you not got stuck in the congestion. Fantastic!

I'm really happy with my race this morning. I ran the Humboldt Redwoods Half Marathon in the scenic Avenue of the Giants in northern California.

Based on how I did at the Rock 'n' Roll San Jose Half Marathon two weeks ago, I was expecting about the same time. SJ was really flat whereas this course was hilly but at least I wasn't battling a cold this morning.

I felt great for about .25 mile and then my left hamstring started killing me. I slowed down a little and tried to run it off. I was wondering what I had gotten myself into but fortunately, it didn't hurt after another half mile or so. Strange!

I really picked up the pace around mile 2 and didn't really look back. I tired quicker than I thought but it was probably because I wasn't sticking to any particular pace.

I didn't have any expectation of PR'ing but was hoping I would better my course record for this race as it was my third running of it.

I don't know my official time yet as it hasn't been posted yet but my gun time when passing the finish line was 1:59:21, my very first sub-2:00 half in 11 tries! :cool1::cool1::cool1:

My previous course record was about 6:30 slower and I beat my overall PR by about 3:30!

So no, I won't be BQ'ing any time soon but this short chubby dude is pretty happy right now. Which is a good thing too because I'm too sore to do much else at the moment besides type!

Time to start catching up on today's football games on my DVR!

-steve

Congrats on the PRs, Steve and Maura! I'd felt optimistic for Maura when my iPhone Scrabble letters came up as her user name yesterday morning. What are the odds?

I'm on the DL now with what I thought was plantar fasciitis but is posterior tibial tendon disfunction or something to that effect. Heel pain with some ankle involvement for almost two weeks now. I'm very worried about the Goofy training I'm missing.

Maura...Great job! Qualifying for Boston is a big deal and you should be really proud.

Steve...Nice job on the PR. Sometimes just running w/o a pace plan works and gets you into just running vs. stressing over time.

I finished my first full today too. It was the Columbus, OH marathon and had about 15,000 total runners (5,000 Full, 10,000 Half). It started at 7:30 am for everyone and the full and half ran together for the first 12.5 miles. Was actually pretty cool to have everyone together for that long. It was about 48-40 degrees at the gun and heated up to around 60 degrees by the end. It was a nice day and sunny throughout. You start downtown and run by some musuems and theater of arts. You then run through some nice neighborhoods and by the govenors mansion. He was of course out front waving and high fiving runners. Then through german town which has some nice boutique shops. You then head back downtown to drop off the Half runners and run into The Ohio State campus. Really a fun run through campus and very scenic. You then head back downtown for the downhill finish. A pretty flat course overall and had great support the entire race. It seemed like there was a different band every half mile or so. Folks were cheering on the side almost the entire course, only a few open spots. I had more fun at this race, than the Disney 1/2's I've done.

My race was okay. My legs starting cramping up around mile 21 and I had to walk and stretch about 5 or 6 times. I ended up losing at least 5 minutes there alone. I ended up finishing in 3:23 so I can't complain, but I'm a little upset because I had it in me to break 3:20 pretty easily.

I can't say that I am rushing out to sign up for another full, but I did enjoy this race (up to mile 21) and could be talked into doing another full. But since we are expecting our 2nd son in January, I doubt I'll be doing a ton of training for awhile.

Thanks for the congrats, everyone. Today my quads/abductors are pretty sore, but I'm feeling okay otherwise.

Kim Looks like your Scrabble app was right! I thought that was pretty neat.

Steve WTG on finishing sub-2:00. That is a big deal. And isn't it weird how some things start aching and then it can mysteriously go away? Glad your hamstring didn't interfere with your race.

Jason Fantastic first marathon! Now that I am a veteran of 2 whole marathons (;)) I am still amazed at the difference between running 20 miles in training and running 26 in a race--even at the same pace. It isn't just the extra distance. I swear, the body just reacts differently. I have come to appreciate just finishing my first marathon--even though it was a little ugly towards the end. And I am just as happy about the improvement in how I felt finishing yesterday as I do about the time improvement.

Maura

:thumbsup2 WOOO HOOO Maura! Great job! You are amazing! What a great time!

My BIL told me before my first marathon, that the half way point in a marathon is Mile 20. Your thoughts confirm that (as do Jason's).

Jason! Great first marathon! I just did first full also and wasn't sure I was going to do another. The halfs are alot more fun I think but I did start looking for another full next year, so I'm afraid I have the 'bug'.

Steve Awesome run!!! Great sub 2:00!! That is my goal for next year!!

Good morning Goofs!

Congrats to all of our runners and PR's!!! Amazing!!! I'd love to see some of the bling if you can post a picture or two. Yes, for me, its ALL about the bling. I'd love to add some non Disney bling to my collection some day. Lots of comments passed around about all of the troubles with the Wine and Dine 1/2, I'm curious to see what changes will be made for next year.

How's the weather in your neck of the woods? We've had cooler mornings (for us anyways) in the low 60's and nice afternoons in the low to mid 80's. Thats fall and early winter for us. Praying for NO repeat of last January.

Here's the medal...it is what I had put in my siggie. This picture was taken before the dog grabbed it to play "keep away" and put teeth marks right through the lanyard. (Yes, he is still alive!)

Maura, LOVE the bling! Sorry about the teeth marks though.

Maura, does your new signature mean what I think it means? Registration sold out pretty quickly, so I hope it means you got in!

I told Chuck you'd BQ'ed this weekend and even though he only met you for like 5 minutes at the WISH dessert party this past marathon weekend, he feels as proud as I do to "know" someone who qualified for Boston. :cheer2:

Hey Goofs - quick update. I'm back on the injured list again. Still running, but I tried to get back into my old routine too quick. So, lesson learned, and I am limiting myself to 2 miles (or less) per day until at least the end of the month. OTOH, I can still row and bike, so I'll just do more miles that way. And then take November slow. I should still be able to train for my spring races.
