It is not actually bacteria but an amoeba known to inhabit all tropical lakes, which include all of the lakes in Florida. The amoeba resides at the bottom of the lakes and gets stirred up when swimmers, walk wade, swim, etc. This little amoeba enters your nose and finds its way to the brain via the nasal passages and sinuses and can cause, (should one become infected) an amoebic encephalitis (or brain infection). Water skiing is still permitted. Presumably, one doesn't water ski underwater.
