No REAL ID? That'll be $18.

I don't have a Real ID, but it's not for the lack of trying. My license was up for renewal this past spring and I thought I'd go ahead and get it. I just had one little problem.... I couldn't find my birth certificate or passport. Every other family birth certificate is in it's file... just not mine. So, apparently, I've used them for something and put them somewhere else for safe keeping and I've yet to find that spot. :) Anyway, I went through the process to get another birth certificate and paid the fees. However, the state of Alabama apparently can't find my birth certificate either!

Thankfully, I do have a DoD ID (military) which gets me through airport security. Once I find my documents, I'll update my ID.

I just flew back from Kauai on Wednesday evening. I have Real ID and was almost prevented from flying home because my name on my driver's license does not match my name on my plane ticket.

I have never had a problem before in all of the years I've been married. It finally took a stranger in line behind us to ask the TSA agent, "So how did she get to here if she shouldn't have been allowed to fly with that ID? Did she swim from the mainland?" He said this to the supervisor who was not letting me past security.

Here's the long story:
I forget what it's called but women taking husband's name has prove the name changes. There have been cases where paper proof has been lost due to fire/flood 50 years ago.

So it's not easy peasy for everyone.
I didn't lose my original papers, I had them in my hand and was denied 3 times.

We have to have: ID and lawful presence (birth certificate, US passport or other documents showing ID and legal US presence) Name changes (marriage license, etc) SS Number, and finally, State residency (two documents with your name, current address, and a current date, such as lease, utility bills, and mortgage statement.)

When I got married, I hyphenated my last name and DH's last name. I did this because I am the last person in my family with the last name. I also go by my middle name and after I was married and changed my name on my driver's license, they could not fit my entire name on the license, so they dropped my first name and just put the initial. My driver's license has my first initial, middle name, and hyphenated last name.

This name change caused me to now have my full name on my SS card, my passport, my United Airlines frequent flyer account but nothing else.

In my area only one name can be on any utility bills so we had to change the name on the water bill to my name so I could have the mortgage and a utility bill in my name. This is important later in the saga.

The first time I went to renew my license and get the Real ID, in I brought in all of the required items, including my current driver's license. I was denied because the name on my driver's license did not match the name on my birth certificate. I handed them my wedding license and was denied. I had to make an appointment with a supervisor and bring back every legal document with my name. Denial #1 mor

It took two weeks before I could get in for that appointment. I brought in the same IDs as well as my mortgage statement and two bills to prove residency. My IDs were okayed by the supervisor, but the mortgage statement was denied because it only had my middle name with my last name, not my first name or first initial. Denial #2

We were now required to do a quick deed to change for our mortgage paperwork to match my current driver's license.

The third time, with the supervisor again, I now had my current IDs, name changes (wedding license), SS number, new mortgage paperwork, and one other bill with my name, this would be our water bill. I was denied yet again because the water bill did not have the hyphen on my last name. Denial #3.

The last time I went in was with a different supervisor. She asked why I had been denied three times and I explained. She wasn't happy about how this was playing out for me or for at least 2 or 3 other women every week. 3 -4 women every week does not sound like a lot, but at one DMV location combined with others in the state that was a lot of women every in my state that was experiencing the same issues in some form or another.

I am now more seriously than ever before, considering changing my name. If someone had told me I could have dropped my first name that I have never used on my wedding license, making my middle name and newly married last name my legal name, I would have done this in a heartbeat!

The hoops you had to jump through to get a Real ID are absurd! I understand the desire to make sure all documents are legitimate and apply to the same person. However, if you used the same Social Security number for your current ID and your mortgage, and the same address for your mortgage and water bill, that should have been sufficient to show that there isn't another person with a very similar name.

I would think there are also men who go by middle names rather than first names, and more men than women who are "Junior" or "3rd", so it's interesting that the name-mismatch problem is affecting primarily women.

It was so absurd and ridiculous. I had to take time off from work to get this all done. I'm a teacher and couldn't do this during time off because my birthday is during the school year. They did give me a non-Real ID license at least so I wouldn't have to drive without a current license.

One thing I did not mention was, I had my airport ID with me for this flight from my home airport. We volunteer at the airport, so we have to have the exact same background checks as those who work for TSA. The Kauai TSA supervisor would not even accept that as ID, even though it has my entire first, middle, and last name on the ID! He said because it didn't match my boarding pass it doesn't count. (United has combined my last name into one long name with no hyphen. They cannot change is because supposedly their system does not do hyphens.)

Why didn't you just get a passport?

Do they issue real ID's for non-drivers, then?

I upgraded my license last time I renewed it, so this doesn't affect me directly, but I am curious. - There are plenty of people who don't drive, but do travel (people with certain vision issues, for instance, or who live in big cities and simply don't need a car). How does it work for them?
My son doesn't drive. My wife and I have never gotten Real IDs because I don't want to deal with the hassle at the DMV. We just use passport cards at TSA.

Passports are not as easy to carry as DL. They also don't function as DL. So, if you just use your PP as the Real ID, and you're going to be driving, you have to carry two IDs, one of which doesn't easily fit into a pocket.

ETA: To say nothing about the added cost.

The passport cards are the same size at a driver's license.

I thought it was really easy to get my Real ID in PA. All I needed was my passport, SS card, my DL (which I have with me all the time anyway), and my auto insurance card (also always in the car). If I had a W2 form, I would have only needed the passport & SS card. One opening of the in-home safe to grab the passport and SS card and I was on my way. And you can renew online -- just like a regular DL. Sorry it's more difficult for you. I have a passport and passport card, but I prefer to have a back-up ID when traveling. I keep my RIDL in my wallet and my passport card in my carry-on bag. I'm paranoid. :D
I find it ironic that my passport by itself is good enough for TSA, and I have Global Entry to boot, but that alone is not good enough for REAL ID when coupled with my valid PA driver's license. They want my birth certificate, marriage license and social security card...all with exactly matching names...in addition to my driver's license. I already have a real ID. It's called a passport. That's all I need.

Unfortunately there are technophobes out there who may be reluctant to use REAL ID, mostly due to privacy invasion concerns…
Why would they go to an airport then where there is no privacy and they are taking your picture?
Buses and cars may not be an option in some rural communities if where they wanna go is too long of a distance.
That doesn't negate MillauFr's point. If they're skittish about the "privacy invasion" of getting a Real ID, then an airport is not the place for them.

I agree that if I have a passport and a driver's license that I shouldn't need to provide any other information to get a Real ID. But I really didn't think it was that difficult to grab my passport and SS card out of the safe (along with my license and insurance card that are always with me anyway) to get my Real ID. I didn't have to show my marriage license or birth certificate to get my Real ID. I've had friends who don't have passports or don't have the exact same name on every form of ID have a much harder time getting their Real ID. I'm just glad I didn't have any problems getting mine. Lots of people told me it was pointless to get the Real ID if I already have a passport and passport card. I just prefer to have 2 forms of legal ID with me when flying and I don't really want to carry my regular passport with me for domestic travel.

I have a passport card as well, $30 for 10 years, same size as my license. WAY easier to get!

Dont forget the $130 for a passport. Can you get just a card? And still, the PP card isn't good as a DL.
I also have a passport (NJ residents have the highest percentage of folks with US passports, 68%), anyone can get a passport here, but only a handful can get a real ID license.

And you can't do international travel without a passport. What's your point? I need a DL to drive. I need a passport to travel outside of the country. REAL ID is not a substitute for a passport or DL (lots of people with state ID and no DL get REAL IDs) but a passport is a substitute for REAL ID.

The RID is just not worth the hassle for me when I'm already covered with the documents I possess. Given the many hoops that my state requires married women to jump thru (or anyone with a name change for that matter) coupled with the limited locations and hours of service for obtaining that little star on my license, I see no need to bother.

I have a passport and it was one of the IDs I took with me. They did not accept it because the name did not match my DL.

I have never taken my passport for travel in the US because I don't need it. I have never had an issue with using my DL as ID for security at the airport, so I didn't take my passport for this trip. I have flown multiple times since Real ID was required with this license and no issues.

ETA - I find it absurd that my DL with a name that does not match my birth certificate or marriage license could be used to get my passport, but my passport could not be used to get my Real ID license because it did not match the name on my birth certificate or DL.
