No NSF charge for me, kinda surprised

why are you cutting it so close? if i only had 8 buck in the bank, i would not use that account AT ALL until i had more money in it!! to me, 8 bucks might as well be 0.

And I certainly wouldn't have 2 disney trips planned.

Lunacy? Financial problems? I had no idea it was a financial problem to spend down to 0 in your checking account. I thought that's what those were for, spending money. I thought savings accounts were for saving. I guess I'll just have to continue my financial problems though cause to me it is lunacy to carry a balance in a checking account unless it's interest bearing, I would rather move it to my savings account, thank you very much. Leaving hundreds and thousands sitting in a checking account is just wasting the potential earnings on it, again, lunacy. We're not talking about debt, or credit cards, we are talking about slightly going over on already existing, already hard earned money. Again, we're talking about going over by $5 to $10, not $30, not $100, and not being put on a credit card collecting fees. To me those are financial problems. But then again, what do I know, I am a lunatic with financial problems because I spend my money out of my checking account and let my savings collect interest in my savings account, and visit disney.

That's just cutting it a little close. It's always a good idea to leave a little cushion.

This is a poster who under a banned previous name (ShellyLynn something) talked openly about their credit card problems, charging the cards to a high balance and then bragging about only paying cents on the dollar. That's a little different than what you are talking about.

I would recommend people change their username a little more if they are going to come back reincarnated.

The OP aside, as I do not have a dog in that fight, I see a few posts talking bout how $8 equals = zero (um, no 8 = 8), and how it's lunacy to spend the money out in your checking account, and how it's deploable to have disney trips if you spend the money in your checking account. Well, yes, I tak offense to those. Because I DO spend down to 0 (and heck, I make mistakes and overdraw too) in my CHECKING account, but just cause I do is no reason for people to make assumptions that I do not also have stocks, savings accounts, etc and that I have financial problems. I guess I don't understand how some people think it's ok to post rude remarks because they manage their money DIFFERENTLY, and somehow that makes them better.
Again, whatever the OP did or does might be something entirely, but that wasn't what this post is about, and the comments were blanketedly directed at all of us posters who spend to 0, they didn't say anything about any of that other stuff.

See, but is it? Just because I choose to budget EVERYTHING from groceries to gas to incidentals, etc etc, sp that I can skim the rest out and put it in to my savings account where it collects interest, that means that yes, the day or so before payday I am going to hit 0 or close to it, but my cars are full, my fridge is stocked and bills are paid? Why should that be considered bad or cutting it close? And why would I need that cushion in my checking account just sitting there for no reason? If something comes up that I didn't foresee then it takes just a couple clicks of the mouse to move funds from my savings to my checking.
See, it's just different, you choose to do it your way and I can choose mine. But I see no reason to make comments using harsh words like lunacy or question someone's right to go to disney.

Try not to take comments on the internet so personally. It makes participating on message boards much easier.

To answer your question, yes, I think it is. An extra $25-$50 provides a cushion that could keep people from paying more than that in overdraft fees. Your mileage may vary. That's okay. Have a good day.

I'd probably be having panic attacks if my checking was only at $8. And nevermind if it really was at $0. I have more than 1 account, including savings accounts, but I still would panic if any one of them was at $8 unless I was in the process of closing it.

If you don't keep track of transactions, sure, but if you track your transactions there's no need for a "cushion." If something unexpected happens I can pull from savings.

I also don't like to leave a high balance in my checking as I've heard too many stories of someone getting into the account and draining it...yes you can get your money back, but it's a hassle.

Oh thank you. Someone else who understands that it is not neccessarily irresponsible to actually use the funds in your checking account. And exactly! If you keep a register at home, write EVERYTHING down, then no need for a cushion. I also check accounts online daily, to make sure any money my husband might have spent gets kept track of too, he has a tendency to forget. :sad2:

Also, Allison, your cushion idea is just another example that not everything works for everyone and people should really tailor a financial plan to themselves. To you, you need/want a cushion. For me and my family a cushion is not only impractical but also could be BAD. If I had the cushion in there I KNOW it's there and I would be more likely to spend it, it's a good idea in theory but just would NOT work, it'd be spent. So, I budget in some free money every month, it's there, it's accounted for, it's spent. And then my "cushion", my extra, is in my savings "OUT of my hands". Safe! :)

And taking stuff personally, well, right maybe I shouldn't. But also I don't think it's a good excuse to be able to say and make rude remarks in the first place, and just say "oh, don't take it personal". However, none of the rude remarks came from you, in fact you were quiet well composed and while we have a difference in opinion you weren't trying to shove yours down my throat, and I just kept responding cause I really feel like it's worth explaining how it at least works for me. :confused3

Former banker here with an easy explanation.

Gas transaction didn't post on the day he pumped the gas. It posted the next day.

It posted the same day you made the $4 deposit.

DEPOSITS get posted BEFORE PURCHASES, CHECKS, WITHDRAWALS.

So, in that order, at the end of the day, you NEVER WENT INTO THE RED.

Even as a former banker, who keeps my account to the penny, I would be way to nervous to ever have my account balance that low. Especially with my DH sharing it with me as he surely doesn't remember stuff either. lol

Not seeing how "ghosting" a cushion of say $100.00 is a bad thing? Better to have a cushion and never need it than to need $5.00 and have no cushion. Wouldn't be worth the risk of getting an NSF fee or two or three.

Agree completely. An extra 20 not in the savings account is not going to lose anything significant in interest, but may prevent an NSF charge which can be really high.

I agree as well. I have a much, much larger cushion in my checking account. I do earn interest on it, though and don't own a debit card so that things like this won't happen.

:thumbsup2
I agree-that is lunacy:eek:

I always have a few hundred in my account and a few thousand in our joint

What amazes me is all the folks with financial problems and multi Disney trips in their siggy:sad2:

Just because someone has had "multi disney trips" does not mean that they have always had financial issues. Heck, my family was good and we had a nice savings until my piece of crap ex decided to stop paying child support. I pay EVERYTHING now and unfortunatly have had to touch the savings because college and kids are not cheap. My piece of crap ex has also dropped our son from insurance just to be a jerk so I am helping the kid pay the deductibles and such so he can continue to focus on his education.

Well, when said person (AKA OP) brags about how she maxed out multiple credit cards and then "settled" with the credit card companies for pennies on the dollar ~ all while going on multiple vacations ~ yeah, it means you have financial issues.

Yep. She was darn proud of it. Didn't she say she settled $14,000 of debt with Citicard for $8,000 and then was going to do the same thing with Chase this year? She was so proud she even put it in her signature for a brief time.

Maybe if she stopped maxing out her CC debt, she could save some money and have more than $8.00 to buy gas. Maybe she could keep a $10 buffer in her checking account, too.

OP is a reincarnation of a not so nice BB poster, just as the PP's stated. Let the search function be your guide.

Actually, I dont think her ( OP)math skills are too good and maybe that is where the financial problens happen

Case in point

That whole thread just cracked me up. Thanks for sharing.

On a side note - I never have figured out how you guys know that someone is a reincarnate poster. It always makes me laugh when you guys know - because I never do! Who was the OP in a previous life?
