if you joined this thread on page one, you'd know that Disney may try out a chipped cup at self-serve soda fountains.

By Page 5, Disney was evil and greedy.

By page 10 you'd think Disney was trying to kill you while draining your wallet.

By Page 20, Disney folded the U.S. Constitution into a paper cup RFIDed it, urinated in it, and shouted "Drink this!"

....Disney Imagineers have nothing on the collective imagination of this forum.

Ok, back to the movie.

Clearly, you are not going to get this, but let me try. There is no magic fairy that simply creates a paper cup. Disney has to source this cup from somewhere. Now they most likely have an amazing discount, but they still pay SOMETHING for the cup. Let’s throw some crazy number out there like $.05 a cup and some lowball figure like 3,000 people across all parks. When you add these pennies up it’s close to $55,000. I’m not sure where you are employed, but most employers would welcome a suggestion on how to save the company $55,000.

My second point is that these cups are wasteful. Using paper products in general for a single serving is wasteful. It adds to the garbage and it ultimately ends up in a landfill. This can all be solved by bringing a mug from home or purchasing ONE bottle and refilling it.

Lastly, this is not goodwill. They have water available, guests simply cannot be bothered to use the water fountain. Also there really is no more to accounting (especially with Disney) than the accurate recording of financials. Again, show me on the 10K the goodwill impairment relating to "free" water.

You're saying two different things here. First of all, you're saying that using single-serving paper cups is wasteful. Fine. There is nothing wrong with bringing a Nalgene or Kleen Kanteen into the parks if you so desire, and it may be your opinion that this is the responsible thing to do. That's your opinion, and I won't argue that with you.

The second thing you're saying is that if someone is hot and thirsty from the Florida sun, and you owned WDW, you would not allow them to get a cup of cold water without paying for it. Once again, that may be your opinion, but I think it's dead wrong. And THIS is the situation where goodwill comes into play, or more likely, badwill. That is to say, if you ONLY offer guests who pay EXTRA on top of their ticket cold water, you're more likely to see guests that think of you as a money-grubbing greedy corporation. Nobody wants to give their money to a money-grubbing greedy corporation, and no corporation wants to be seen like that, especially a family destination like WDW. Feel free to disagree, but the nickel cup can save you a lot of good/badwill in this situation.

And here I was about to post, "Please don't feel the trolls"!:lmao:

Well that is pretty wasteful. And the fact that you see nothing wrong with this is sad. Invest in a travel mug and fill it as needed.

Sorry my opinions make you sad :goodvibes. I'm really glad you're not in charge of WDW :rotfl:. And I'm really thankful that when I'm in France that I can get a cup of ice water if I'm hot. Or wherever I am. Its convenient and its part of what makes me feel spoiled at Disney. Its part of why I keep coming back. What's it to you anyway ;)?

So what's your point? McDonalds, Wendy's, Burger King, and every other fast food restaurant in the US also uses disposable cups. The cost of the cup to them is more than offset by what they charge for the drink. WDW uses millions of gallons of water washing sheets in their resorts and dishes in their restaurants; should they stop doing this because it is wasteful? No, because the cost of this water is covered by room rates and restaurant prices.

One day they will chip your coffee... and you will need to decide on which side of the debate your loyalties lie. :surfweb:

Sorry, but these costs add up. I would gladly do away with paper cups if it meant a CM could get a few extra hours a week. Let’s assume the Magic Kingdom “loses” $5,000 a quarter in lost product. Just a fraction to the bottom line, but could be a nice little boost to a working CM. Or maybe they turned that $5k savings into some paint for Main Street or an extra shift for a bathroom attendant.

If you're not a stockholder, or a manager, why do you care?

And if you were either, you'd get it, and just let it go.

1. designing a mug so people are less able to steal is a good idea

2. perhaps they will design the mugs after their trial and possible implementation to be "re-chipped" when you return so there will not be waste

3. Don't be upset with Disney for trying to stop theft, be angry with the thieves for making the step necessary.

For all the talk about Disney being a money hungry, evil corporation please try to remember that they are in fact a company trying to make money and have you spend your hard-earned money in these cash-strapped times on something you want (rather than need)at one of their resorts. (holy run on sentence, Batman! )

You may think because the rates are high that you are somehow entitled to steal beverages because you paid for a mug 3 years ago or even 3 months ago. You're not. Stealing is stealing. Calling it something different doesn't change what it is.

You can cover yourself in chocolate syrup, but that doesn't make you a hot fudge sundae.

i do both, motherland and the darkside since 1993. i enjoy them both.
started with the motherland in 1975.

stay for 16 nights and split the trip between the two resorts.

i do have to say, i prefer the coffee at the darkside.
but, being a coffee addict, i drink it at the motherland and get used to it after the third day.....

i don't discriminate..

PP's idea of a Disney stay is sleeping on the ground outside FW on a blanket of palm fronds, getting his water and 5-eyed catfish out of Bay Lake, and using theme park brochures for TP. Of course, mom or dad buys his park tickets because that bourgeois expenditure doesn't fit his accounting ideology. :confused3

No that was too darn funny

Isn't this the way of ecetronic medai, build from teh top never mind the foundation.

Were you going to post that on the Budget Board or can i? :)

Go ahead, you first. I did read that they were sending the used/outdated brochures over to Africa to make beads and necklaces, then back to the Outpost at Epcot for sale. :)

Wow, I'm pretty sure there is more in life to worry about than cups and if a company is getting duped by people reusing them.

Americans need to stop worrying about everyone elses actions and concentrate on their own hypocrisy.

I was agreeing with this until I realized I was reading post #103...I really do need to get a life.

I think they should make a chipped mug that also contains a gyroscope and a small but powerful motor. When you come back on your next stay and try to use it at a resort, it will allow you to fill the mug as always. However, when you try to drink from it, the motor and gyroscope kick in and make you splash the drink into your own face!

I'd buy a round of free water in extra-wasteful paper cups for everyone on this board if I could see that! :thumbsup2 :lmao:

I need my own staff of Imagineers ... evil Imagineers ...

No, actually, this is sad to debate kindness to humans.
Somewhere, sometime you too will need something, and I hope that someone helps you. I hope Disney does give water to those in need. I will continue to buy bottles as I need them, and mugs. But if I need more than 3 squares of toilet paper I will use that too. Now the poster who mentioned the rationing of the toilet paper, well they might be on to something. If disney used a special key card to alot you with a certain amount of squares a day the savings would really add up. This could fund a whole position of a big salary of $5,000 for a bathroom attendant on main st. too. Anyone up for the job -- you just have to monitor toilet paper!

Totally agree. I've held rather neutral on this so far, except for the possible advances in refillable mug technology (which sounds rather lame now that I write it out), but yup, stealing is stealing. Every time you bring back an old or "unauthorized" mug, you are essentially stealing a new mug from them.

You can cover yourself in chocolate syrup, but that doesn't make you a hot fudge sundae.
As for this, I partially disagree, as it depends totally on who is covering themselves ;).
