I wont quote anyones posts because frankly there are too many of them. Just an FYI... the smoke released from a cigarette, outdoors, is actually third hand smoke, not second. Second would be confined to an indoor space and yes, has many effects on someone in that space whether they are smoking or not. For 3rd hand smoke, studies show liittle effect on a passerby within a 6 foot range. No effect outside of 6 feet. Now, a group of smokers would be slightly different than a single smoker, but its the same little to no effects at 15 feet. A DSA could be 25 feet off the beaten path and the 3rd hand smoke would have ZERO effect on the passerby.

Not saying Disney should have them, but these are the facts. No debate.

I thought third hand smoke was the tobacco residue that can remain on surfaces and dust for months after someone smokes a cigarette. At least that is how the National Center for Health Research describes it. They describe second hand smoke as happening when you are around anyone who is smoking. http://www.center4research.org/third-hand-smoke/

They do describe dangers of third hand smoke, but I do believe these would affect someone living with a smoker on a daily basis, not a guest in someone's home. There should be no worries about this at WDW, as guests who are non-smokers do not lounge around smoking sections touching surfaces that the smokers touched.

No, there are likely no families who have been holding off on a visit to Disney who will go now because it's non-smoking. Disney knows this. And they KNOW that SWGE is about to open and there are plenty of families who will go for that who will replace (and then some) the small/large (whichever you prefer) number of families who have cancelled their trips or are boycotting over this.

Hundreds of thousands of smokers visit and enjoy both Disney parks in the US each year, as well as Millions of drinkers. I thought the boards were here to help each other out, not to criticize everyone that's not exactly like myself. Everybody has there problems. A possible solution for smoking can be fond on page 39, post 766
1 Disney makes money even after possible construction, one cast member at each location for maintenance and possibly collect money etc. If they charge to much for this it wouldn't work.
2 No irritation to other guests.

There are 4 of these facilities in each park in Japan, not charged for but a different culture.

Would FL law even allow this? The smoking ban in my state wouldn't - business owners CANNOT allow smoking in any space where any employee has to be during his/her work duties. The only exception is for casinos. So what you're describing would violate the ban, which was framed as a "workplace safety" issue, and therefore couldn't be done. A lot of businesses here wanted to find solutions to accommodate their smoker-customers - smoking lounges, only allowing smoking on decks or outdoor seating areas, etc. - and the law simply doesn't allow it.

Unless the DSA is 750-1000 feet away, non smokers will be able to smell it, even if they don’t know the location.

But is there a right not to smell cigarette smoke? And if so, how is a DSA less than a hundred yards from where everyone has to wait in line for security/entrance a solution?

My personal choice is to not breathe cigarette smoke while in line for food or a ride.

I think you'd better prepare yourself to smell a heck of a lot more of it while waiting in lines for food or a ride. Or going to the bathroom. OR be prepared to be spending all your time being the 'smoking police' when you are bothered by it.

LOL no. They did it so they wouldn't feel any loss from smokers cancelling trips or boycotting BECAUSE the star wars tuff will draw in more than enough new customers to make up for the loss, and then some. This smoking change has likely been carefully planned for this moment for some time.

The strollers I feel has gotten more reaction than the ice but no I don't think anyone who is upset with the ice or the strollers takes the no smoking inside the parks as their consolation prize. You can be a smoker who is displeased with this decision and yet be pleased with the stroller wagon and reduction in width and then be displeased with the loose ice decision and any combination of that. And I don't think the smoker who is displeased with this decision considers the stroller wagon and reduction in width as their consolation prize and so on and so on. I think they would prefer there be no change to the DSAs inside the parks lol.

Real estate (as in the DSAs taking up space) and the expected incoming crowds for SWGE where space is going to be at the upmost premium is what my main thought is as to why they are doing it now as opposed to last year or as opposed to next year.

Disney has been actively reducing their DSAs over the last couple of years. Ever since joining the DIS with the reduction of DSAs, relocating one of them outside the parks in MK for example, etc that for at least some folks it was an expected eventuality for smoking areas to be given less and less priority. Some even predicted in the future a completely smoke free Resort Property but at least smoke free parks seems to be more the consensus based on how Disney has been treating the DSAs in the parks over the last several years.

I have been going to WDW since "72, long before there were DSA"s .I seriously doubt it will be as bad as you predict. And...I have no problem finding a CM ( or contacting GS) and inform about a smoker in the bathroom. I carry a disney face mask in my pocket .

It really doesn't matter if it is second or third hand smoke now does it? Disney has decided no smoking on their property which is in their right. As successful as a business they are, you know they have scrutinized business models that show them that losing some smokers' business will not hurt their bottom line.

We can argue this for another 48 pages, but it is what it is. Come May 1, there will be no smoking within Disney parks.

I am bummed. I am leaving the parks on April 29, so will just miss the roll out of this policy. Would love to see the enforcement policies they have planned to monitor.

I think Star Wars is the tipping point where they cannot spare the square footage for DSAs in DLR anymore and decided to make the ban consistent in all US parks.

Do you have a crystal ball the rest of do not have access to? You can’t say if the smoking ban along with the ice and strollers will have any effect or not. Disney isn’t going to tell you if it does.

We don’t know if paying to park had any effect on the number of returning guests and we won’t know with this.
