No more smoking or vaping in the parks

What rights? I thought this was about Disney Parks, which means we’re talking about private property rights. Are you saying Disney doesn’t have the right to tell folks not to smoke in their parks?
Talking about the anti vs pro smoking talk that is beating the horse to death. The talk has moved to very general discussion versus this specific policy.

Some are saying they they have a right to smoke while others say they have a right to not breath their smoke.

Both are right in general, one is wrong in this instance. Neither side appears to accept the other side has a basis in fact.

I don't think Disney cares about our opinions, smokers or non-smokers. They've built a fun place to visit that makes it inconvenient to spend your dollars outside the parks/resorts. And people will continue to visit no matter what restrictions/bans they impose. Disney can get as ridiculous as they want and the majority of people will just follow along. I fully expect to be flamed for this because people don't like to hear they are actually sheeple.

What I get out of Disney's bands, all of them except the ice thing, is they have run out of room. More and more people are visiting and they don't have the space inside the parks. They need the spaces vacated by DSA's and wide strollers to pack more bodies in. Disney doesn't plan on a major expansion to accommodate the increase in visitors. And I'm not talking about a re-theme or the slight expansion of creating one or two short pathways to a new ride or two. They don't have a plan to accommodate the increase in visitors by the hundreds of thousands in a few short years.

I think you’re right to some extent. I think the parks are becoming more & more crowded & these new rules including the ice or aimed at keeping the MAJORITY of guests comfortable & safe. I do think they are expanding the parks, but it just draws more ppl. But, I also don’t think they have duty to expand the parks. Visitors know what they’re getting when they buy a tickets.

Basic economics would indicate that not adapting means that they would eventually kill the golden goose.

I'm really surprised how mad people are about this. Like to me its surprising smoking was ever allowed
Walt Disney smoked.
Disneyland opened almost 64 years ago, when smoking was much more widespread.
Magic Kingdom opened almost a half century ago when smoling was still popular, just after cigarette ads were banned from tv.
It surprises me that people would use the word ever inappropriately.

Actually it is the same. The one in Epcot is near Italy. On a breezy day that smell went everywhere.

For the record...DIS stock is up! Glad I bought shares when I did.
I think it's interesting that cigarette smoke travels at the same height all the way from the far corner of Italy all the way to Japan without dissipating upwards.

It would be appreciated if notice were given when a link is a download. As for 3rd hand smoke, that article uses qualifying words and ends with the statement, "Thirdhand smoke is a relatively new concept, and researchers are still studying its possible dangers."
Does anybody else think that Disney’s timing for this smoking ban was deliberate to help thin out the crowds that SWGE will be creating?
There is one single DSA in the California park where SWGE is, on the path to the new area. Smoking is being moved outside all US parks, to reduce congestion on that path then for consistency.

Anything to get rid of the pot smokers at Disney is good in my opinion. On our last Wonder Cruise the pot smokers in the smoking section stunk up the whole sports deck so it was unusable.

Whether or not I'm allergic to anything else has no bearing on the fact that I don't want your carcinogen in my lungs.
Which carcinogens in the air are acceptable to you?
I admit I have a problem with smoking, and I used to smoke. It kills people
Nobody is immortal.
or one of those smokers who mistakenly believes they don't stink.
Which smoker here has even implied, never mind stated, that they don't stink? :confused3

I prefer not to breathe any carcinogens. Your smoke is definitely included in that list. The fact that ALL carcinogens are not currently being eliminated from the air is not relevant. Disney is choosing to remove SOME carcinogens from inside the park, and that's a good thing in my book. If they choose to remove more, that will be good as well. Kudos to them for changing with the times. Your logic is apparently that if we don't get rid of all carcinogens all at once, we shouldn't get rid of any ... very flawed logic, but that's your addiction talking.

Here is what I posted pages before
There is theory about 3rd hand smoke

Why do you think this?

They have gone from several DSAs, to 2 in MK and now to one. Someone had to clean those areas. Now they don’t. Just the one or two, I guess at Epcot.

Of course, I remember when we would go to a DSA and there was never a butt in the ashtray because it was emptied so often. It sure changed. When Dd was in high school,we were in AK and the cans in the DSA in AK were overflowing. Not saying all that is on Disney.

The smokers in this thread are really starting to look rediculous in thier defense of this nasty habit.

I don’t think anyone is defending the habit. It is a horrible addiction/habit. Some are just saying that there are other things that are also bad like second hand smoke.

You think they/we look ridiculous because you hate smoking and like others who hate it, think not having it in the parks is going to make the parks heavenly and all problems will end. It won’t.

Besides I am curious how much fussing there will be on the boards about where the DSAs are outside the parks after May 1. Not by smokers but by non smokers.

The moment you can smell it is the same moment it's impregnated your clothes and hair, and you have to smell like a disgusting ashtray until your next shower....

But is that a reasonable standard for controlling other people's behaviour? That you don't like the smell?

I agree. None of us are perfect. No one is condemning the person rather the entitled attitude that you should be able to engage in your addiction wherever you please no matter who it affects. I think that’s the issue that gets so many angry with smokers. There are a lot of addictions that are difficult to overcome. But, ppl addicted to other substances don’t tend to be as belligerent about being allowed to do it where they please. It’s most likely b/c it used to be a more socially accepted addiction, but it’s not anymore & it’s only going to get worse.

Let's not pretend that there aren't entitled people on both sides of this one. For every smoker who has the attitude that s/he should be able to engage in that addiction wherever they please, there's a non-smoker who thinks that being able to smell a DSA from 20 feet away is going to give her cancer or who plops down on a bench in a DSA and then complains about the smoke (a problem Disney's bench-removal campaign created, BTW, by creating areas where the DSAs had the only benches around). And this policy probably isn't going to change that - the same people who claim that the DSA in Italy makes it impossible to enjoy the gardens in Japan are almost certain to have the same complaint about a DSA near the boat docks and the smoke drifting over to the security/entrance area.

Here you go ... this poster mentions her kid is going to miss out.

First, she's hardly a kid - turning 18 and headed off to college this year. Second, she's had a dozen or so WDW trips with family, so if our family celebration of her 21st happens elsewhere, she's hardly missing out. Odds are that I'm more disappointed with the change than she'll be, because she will just end up planning a girls' trip to F&W with her friends and we'll take her elsewhere to celebrate 21.
