Just saw a blurb about this for our local news tonight. Has anyone heard anything about this? My DH will not be happy if he can't go to a designated smoking area to have a cigarette. (Yes I know it's gross and I don't like it, but I cannot force him to quit) :sad2:

I just read on the resort board that disneyland hotels are all going smoke-free. Maybe that is what you heard? I have a DH who smokes too.

Good question! I know I specifically heard them say "Magic Kingdom" and then I quickly looked at the TV and I'm pretty sure I saw Cinderella Castle. I'm keeping that channel on and hopefully they'll go to that story. I'll report back. I hope it's soon, I have to go food shopping. :teeth:

It has NOTHING to do with WDW. In fact, there is another thread from earlier today asking if anyone has heard if the ban in DL hotels will spread to WDW resorts. A WDW PR person said there are no plans for that right now.

Thanks Bob! Well there goes our plans for staying at the Grand Californian next year. :sad2: I hate smoking, and my DH has cut down drastically, but he still enjoys a couple of cigarettes a day. I think they should keep at least a handful of rooms available for smokers. :smokin: (Wow never thought I'd ever have a reason to use THAT smiley). :lmao:

Well the un-Disney-educated people at our local news station DID say "Magic Kingdom" and showed a picture of Cinderella's Castle. But what do they know!? Apparently, not much, when it comes to Disney. :thumbsup2

I travel with some smokers on business and this is a STUPID policy. What these smokers do is then SMOKE in the nonsmoking rooms...... And they have NEVER gotten a charge so that idea is not working.

Ok they just showed that segment and they DID say Disneyland, but kept calling it the Magic Kingdom and showed clips of Disney World.

I believe the Grand Californian as ALWAYS been smoke free! :thumbsup2

While I realize that many smokers do what you say, my DH would *never* smoke in a non-smoking room (in fact, when we stay at a deluxe resort, he doesn't even smoke in our smoking room, he steps out to the balcony), so that is going to force us to stay off-site if we go to Disneyland. I was just on the Disneyland web site doing research for a trip for next year. :(

Apparently it has always been smoke-free (which I didn't realize until just now), but now we can't even stay at any Disneyland on-site hotel. The more I think about this, the more it angers me. The heck with Disneyland, we'll continue to go to Disney World (unless and until they change their policies), or other vacations where they at least try to accomodate smokers.

Don't get me wrong, I hate smoking, I think it's disgusting and harmful, but for an adult who's smoked their entire life, it's extremelu difficult to quit. My DH cut down drastically, substituting Pez (the candy) for cigarettes, until he broke a tooth! :rolleyes1 Anyway, I think having smoking areas is fine, but to not allow it anywhere at the resorts is ridiculous.

I detest smoking and have little regard for "smoker's rights". While I don't see how they can enforce no smoking at the MK; more power to them if they do. Now, if they can just stop people from smoking at all the bus stops...

Sorry, all...I just re-read my second post above (#5) and it comes across a little too strong. I didn't mean to sound like that...I was in a hurry when I typed it and didn't have a chance to look at it for long before I posted it.

SeaSpray, I guess the thing is..unless the news producer of the segment knows his or her Disney details, they probably just used stock footage. A lot of the "uneducated masses" don't know WDW from DL!! ;)

This is good to know smoking is not banned in the parks. All I could think of was how horrid the bathroom stalls would smell.

I must say that I'm happy if they do do that, but I also know what you mean about quitting. My dh chews tobacco and when we went a few years ago (6yr), he ran out (he wasn't happy at all) and went out to get some more. He had to go outside of Disney to get some. He came back and told me that he couldn't find chewing gum either. But he could find cigarettes. I guess they're going to put the smokers in the same boat.

Very Courteous smoker here. I just read the article and it stated the hotels were going smoke free in their rooms. I didn't see where it said no smoking on the premises, I may have missed it, please correct if I am wrong. Personally I always book non-smoking due to DH and kids who do not smoke, I just go outside somewhere. Yeah, sometimes it is a trek to find a place to smoke, but it is my habit and not one I want to inflict on non-smokers.

California is known for taking a hard stand on the smoking issue. You can't smoke in restaurants, bars etc.... I have been told that there are cities that do not allow smoking in even some of their outside areas.

I am the smoking "area" Natz and on our last trip to WDW did not hesitate to mention it to people I saw who were wandering around smoking. I even told the big, huge, hairy, muscle-y guy in line behind us on Buzz of the policy and asked him to extinguish (I'm either very brave or very stupid) He did without question and told me that he was unaware of the smoking policy. I must admit that at WDW the smoking areas are not clearly defined and the policy was not clearly posted that I saw. A few years ago while visiting DL I thought the smoking areas were clearly marked and easy to find.

I wish they would get rid of smoking in WDW! I dont mind smoking rooms/sections of resorts, but the parks should be smoke free!

And I am a former smoker. DH & I both smoked for years before we had DS. But even when we were smoking, we were always shocked at the way people smoked in the parks. Some show absolutly no regard for anyone around them.

And even when we got "unlucky" with a non-smoking room, we would have NEVER smoked in the room. We always went outside to smoke.

Now we have been smoke free for a few years, and are much happier & healthier.

Terry,

Don't let that stop you from staying at the GC. It is truly beautiful. Plus, if you do still come, I can drive over and meet you all for a drink in the lobby. :thumbsup2

Ok Sean, that's a deal then! :goodvibes :yay: I've seen pictures of the GC and it looks gorgeous, like a cross between the Grand Floridian and the Wilderness Lodge. :sunny:

mamacatnv: Thank you for pointing out that the article didn't say that smoking was banned entirely on the resorts property, so maybe they will have outdoor smoking areas. :)

And good for you for telling other smokers about the smoking areas in the parks. It irks me too, to see people strolling through the parks with a cigarette in their hands or hanging out of their mouths, and then just dropping them on the ground when they're done!

My DH is what you'd call a "considerate smoker" (ok, I realize that might sound like an oxymoron to some of you ;) ), but he never smokes in front of non-smokers (my DSs can't even recall the last time they saw him smoke, it's been years and years), and he never throws his cigarette butts on the ground. Ever. He knocks the lit end off, steps on it to make sure it's out, then throws the cigarette butt into the trash. If we're not near a trash can, he'll hold it until he finds one.

Anyway, I really didn't want to turn this into a smoking debate (because really, there is nothing to debate; it's a disgusting habit that is bad for your health, and non-smoking people shouldn't have to be around it), but I had heard the segment on the news and wanted to find out details. Thanks again Bob for the link :wave2:
