No more smoking allowed at the Magic Kingdom?

a city in CA just made it a law that smoking is illegal in all public areas. (I'd love to move there). the law will be contested, I'm sure. I'm just happy Florida is smoke free in restaurants. I don't think WDW can go smoke-free, but they need to change some of the smoking areas (and enforce them). the one behind Cinderella castle makes no sense to me and is disgusting.

I travel with some smokers on business and this is a STUPID policy. What these smokers do is then SMOKE in the nonsmoking rooms...... And they have NEVER gotten a charge so that idea is not working.

So True!

I think no-smoking at all is going overboard. I quit years ago, and don't like the smell of smoke but since it is legal I think smokers should still have some rights. A few smoking designated areas don't bother me. As long as smokers are considerate and stay in these areas I really don't have a problem with it. If you turn all the rooms into non-smoking some people are definitely going to smoke in them. We had this problem last month at the GF. Non-smoking room that was definitely smoked in.

Just wanted to let you know that at DL the off site hotels are within walking distance (some closer) that the Disney property hotels. Not sure how much research you've done or if you've been to DL before. We went a few eyars ago and as a WDW vet I was shocked at the ease of walking to everything at DL. We like WDW best, but think DL is fun and very worthwhile for any Disney fan to experience.

Thank you :) I really haven't done much research at all, yet. I've been to Disneyland, but it was over 10 years ago, and I only went for one day while I was in California visiting friends. All I really remember from that day was the Indiana Jones ride, which I loved, and waited in line 2 hours for. :teeth: I want to go back and really enjoy the park this time as well as the new parks. :sunny:

I detest smoking and have little regard for "smoker's rights". While I don't see how they can enforce no smoking at the MK; more power to them if they do. Now, if they can just stop people from smoking at all the bus stops...

I have to agree. Although I was raised by smokers, as a mother I myself would prefer people NOT smoke at WDW. They can go smoke outside the turnstile, but I cannot tell you how many times a smoker slinging a lit cigarette outside of the smoking area had that cigarette RIGHT at DDs head level and almost burnt her. Yes, WDW is for grown ups as much as it is kids, but so many of those who smoke don't even use the designated areas and ruin it for others.

Another note, then I PROMISE I'll get off my soapbox, in MK one Oct it was hot and sunny and DD needed a shade rest w/ my sis while a friend & I rode Thunder Mtn. The ONLY shady spot, was a smokers area. It was sit her in the sun or next to smokers.. not a fun choice to make.

Don't get me wrong, I hate smoking, I think it's disgusting and harmful,

You mentioned this fact four times. How is it relevant to the original query?

It's only relevent to the fact that I'm acknowledging that smoking is all of those things, but I still think there should be smoking areas for smokers to go to, even if, as in the case of the resorts, it's only outside in a small contained area.

I wasn't keeping count, I'm surprised *anyone* was... why does it matter how many times I've said it?

How is YOUR question relevent to this discussion?? Oh, and don't bother answering that, it's irrelevent to ME :lmao:

Another smoker here. DH and I both smoke and to be honest, we're tired of our right to smoke being trampled on. No smoking in a restaurant, fine, it's not that big of an inconvenience to walk outside. However, going "out of the turnstiles" at WDW is a BIG inconvenience.

Just a previous experience at WDW during a trip in 2002.... we were in the smoking area waiting for the fireworks to begin when a woman came up to us not asking for us to put out our cigarettes, but DEMANDING that we do so! She then told us in her ever-so-pleasant voice that if we "MUST smoke, that we might want to THINK about going to the smoking section." My DH then (using his ever-so-pleasant voice) pointed out to her that we WERE in the smoking section (she was standing right in front of the smoking sign, DUH!) and it was she who needed to go elsewhere, not us! As she walked away loudly saying "THE NERVE of those smokers, blah, blah, blah..." we couldn't help but laugh our butts off at THE NERVE of some non-smokers who think their bleep don't stink! :rotfl2:

Now, I realize this is not a welcome story to many of you non-smokers, however, as with civil injustices in our nation's history, what might be a popular idea at the time does not make it right to trample on another individual's rights simply because they are in the minority!

Ok, whippin' out the flame suit now, so go ahead...
:smokin: :smokin: :smokin:

Personally I think NO smoking rooms at all is a bad idea. I'm a smoker and I never smoke in our hotel/resort room (it's too confined and I wouldn't go smoking in my children's bedroom right now either! same thing..) I always go outside to smoke. I have only EVER smoked at WDW parks in the designated smoking areas and even as a smoker I get annoyed with those that walk around smoking with their cigs near my children's heads, throwing butts down everywhere, etc.

However, no smoking rooms at all just means people (you know some will!!!) will smoke in nonsmoking rooms. without designated smoking rooms, with people smoking in nonsmoking rooms because of this--- there will be even MORE cases of people checking in to find that their room reeks of smoke. And even myself as a smoker will not be happy with that for my family! Too many rooms like that- how will they move you to another room if the resort is full to capacity at the time? How this is better is beyond me.

I'm not gonna flame ya. DH is a smoker and he tries to be as respectful of others as possible. I don't like his habit and I do wish he'd quit...BUT...being a vigilante about it is just plain wrong. There's a growing intolerance in this country of anything we don't like or fear and it's plain ugly; be it intolerance of smokers, gays, liberals, conservatives or the religious right. It's not enough to disagree...some people have to SHOUT YOU DOWN to make their point. It's sad really.

I won't particularly enjoy the stops and detours we'll be making to smoke stops in the parks next week. And while I won't be lighting up myself, if anyone thinks they're going to be ugly to my husband they'll have me to contend with.

Oh, and when we stayed at Grand Californian I can guarantee you our balcony was definitely not smoke free.

(ETA...last time we stayed in Vegas we found ash trays in the nightstand of our non smoking room. When we asked why we were told it was required by the fire code. They were smart enough to know that smokers in a non smoking room will often smoke anyhow. Having an ash tray was thought to at least keep people from resting cigarettes on the furniture and lessen the chance of fire. How bout that, actual common sense!!!!)

As long as DISNEY is the one making this decision about their hotels I honestly don't have a problem with it...and yes, I am a smoker.

I've been saying for a long time that as long as smoking is legal it should NOT be up to the goverment to regulate what a private business does.
The business should be allowed to do what it feels is in it's own best interests and I think it's wrong for the goverment to force them to do something that might be harmful to their livelihood.

A local restaurant here decided to become non-smoking...not because of a law, they just decided to do it on their own. Well, their business suffered and they went back to having a smoking section. THEIR choice and as it should be.

I heard about a man who opened a cigar bar, the whole point of the place was for people to come in and smoke cigars. 6 or 7 months later the city or maybe it was county passed a law about smoking in public buildings. The poor guy had to shut down and I heard he later filed for bankruptcy. How is that right?

If Disney has decided this is the best thing for their business/hotels in California, then they have the right to make that decision...and if they feel they are losing business or that it isn't working out, they should retain the choice of changing it.

I have no problem with smoking being banned in public buildings like court houses, libraries, federal buildings, ect....but privately owned businesses should be allowed to make their own decisions.

If the goverment is SO concerned about smoking and the public health, then they need to make the sale of cigarettes illegal, but they won't because they make too much money from those sales.

Anyway....if Disney feels going non-smoking is best then so be it....I wouldn't like it if they did this everywhere, in the parks, at all hotels and all parks, but I would have to respect the fact that is their business and they know what is best for it. Would I chose to go elsewhere on vacation? Maybe I would, maybe I wouldn't, but then that is my choice and as it should be.

All I can say about smokers is that they are killing themselves and polluting the earth one butt at a time. I can't wait until the day that smoking is banned in all public places. When that happens and you don't like it - feel free to move to Europe.

Hmmm...tell me, what were the reasons we fought for independence? Obviously, not for the right to smoke, but I seem to recall something about freedom & individual rights? The government that governs least governs best...something like that, no?

I served my country for 9 years - so don't go there.

The whole "individual rights" things goes out the window as soon as what YOU are doing (blowing toxins into my air, ruining the environment with your butts) negatively affects others.

Whoa...didn't say YOU were unAmerican. Easy fella, I wasn't "going" anywhere. Just saying that this country was built on the principles of freedom & individual rights & too much governing.

BTW, I am pretty sure it's not "YOUR" air. Unless you are perfect & are doing absolutely nothing that is harmful to the environment, you shouldn't throw stones.

Dear Moderators:

I am respectfully requesting that this thread be closed. It's original purpose was to find out information about something I had heard on the news that indicated a change at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. As it turns out, this was not the case, instead it concerns resorts at DisneyLand, and that information has now been verified.

This thread has now gone into a totally different direction, and it no longer pertains to Walt Disney World "Theme Parks Attractions and Strategies". Thank you :)

You are right. I am sorry I took this OT. I just get bent sometimes, when people see their rights as more important than others. Big equal rights person here. Again, I am sorry.
