No more life jackets at the muster drills?

While I understand why people don't want to wear them I am very surprised Disney would stop the practice. During an emergency they best way to keep from panicking is practice..practice..practice.

I, for one, never complained about the drills, it was good practice and showed me where to go to get to the life boats with the life jacket on, as it would be furing an emergency.While saving 20 minutes of our time, and the sail away party WON'T start untill it's over.

Unfortunately people will be happy not to wear the life jackets to the drill and applaud Disneys decision and it will seem like a great idea untill the first diaster happen, which PRAY it doesn't.

I will be very happy if DCL stops making you wear the lifejacket to the safety drill. I think going up and down the stairs with those things on is unsafe. We've been on RCi and Carnival recently and we did not need to wear our vests for either drill. Personally, I think it makes more sense to store the vests neer the life boats. In an emergency, people would not need to go back to their rooms. Also, in an emergency, I think the staircases would be deadly if people were rushing around with vests on.

I have no problem wearing the jackets. BUT, why do we need to leave them on until we get to our cabin? My poor kid fell because he couldn't see the stairs - he was going up, so no injury, but we held everyone up. And DH had to carry the 3 year old which is really hard when you are both wearing jackets!

I can see they wanting you to not lose them and RETURN them to your cabin immediately but as another poster said, why can't one person do that while everyone else goes to the sail away?

I don't care either way, I guess. They know more about industry standards than I do, and I'm sure it's been evaluated and the risks weighed. It's only a few minutes out of my life. But if they think it's less overall risk to NOT have us wear the life vests during the drill, I'm certainly cool with that.

A couple of random thoughts....

1. One time is not "practice". If you are the panicy sort, doing this one time is not going to change your panicy nature.

2. If you can't figure out how to put on a dang life vest, God help ya.

3. There are actually life vests on the lifeboats. Ever been on one when it is used as a tender? There are lifevests for 100% of the capicity of the boat per coast guard regulations.

4. The only scenario I can imagine where a life vest might come in handy would be IF the ship was on fire and they decided to evacuate the ship AND there happened to be extremely rough seas AND happen to be swept overboard byt a rogue wave while trying to board a life boat.

I think its a matter of size of the hallways and safety. If everybody takes off their life jackets and carries them, it will take up space while everybody is trying to get through the hallways. Also, straps will be dragging on the floor causing potential tripping opportunities. Also, if you don't take them off, there is a better chance of them making it back safely to your cabin.

I'm sure there would be some folks who, in the PANIC of an actual emergency, would not be able to figure it out despite being quite able to if given the opportunity under non-stress situations. Not everyone is able to keep a cool head in life-threatening situations and that does not make them panicky by nature, especially if they do not routinely experience life threatening situations to "toughen" them up.


So yeah, if they haven't ever done it and panic when the time comes...they will need God to help them.

Odds are, though, that someone like this would not be helped much by 1 time trying on the vest and wearing it to a drill. Especially if they broke their arm falling down the stairs, with the vest on, during this drill.

There are probably just as many people who, in an emergency, can't keep a cool enough head to remember how to put on a life jacket even if they tried it ten times before in a drill.

Luckily there are others around to help.

OTOH, wearing them pushes your head back and you can't easily look down and see your feet and 'watch your step' as you walk down the stairs. The vests are designed to keep your face out of the water but that makes them awkward to wear when walking.

All comes down to whether or not you are cuasing more risk than you are mitgating by wearing them to the drill. Evidently the people who study safety for a living have made thier determination.
