Upgrades and room requests

I know, I know... book what you want. Having said that, DD just got an awesome Pixie Dust upgrade at AKL (from bounceback rate on a savanna view room to a 1br savanna view suite at club level!) and I am SO jealous!! Anyhow... do you think you have a better chance at an upgrade if you haven't made a room request (like thru Touring Plans) or do we think it really doesn't matter, that Disney will move whomever, wherever, as needed? OR are there resorts at which you are more likely to get an upgrade? Just curious... biggest upgrade I've ever had in 35+ Disney trips is from standard to preferred at ASMusic, and usually my only room request is upper floor.

Pixie dust upgrades are rare and can't be predicted. Our biggest upgrade was from Coronado Springs to Grand Floridian, and that was a last minute two-night trip. I would think that certain room requests, like traveling together with another group, would exclude someone from a switch to a different resort. But my sister has gotten many room upgrades when she travels with us and we have a better room category at the same resort. For example, we book river view at POR and she gets an upgrade to river view from her woods view reservation. The one time she did not get a room upgrade a POR was when she requested a corner room. Otherwise, she got a room upgrade every time. :)

So, no, I don't think a room request automatically disqualifies someone from a pixie dust upgrade.

I don’t think it matters what you’ve requested.
If they need to move you, for whatever reason, they will.
I think an upgrade is more likely to happen for shorter stays like one or two nights over longer stays.

I think it is luck of the draw. Wow, your daughter did get pixie dusted! Maybe you will get lucky too!

We just returned from a five night stay at the Yacht Club where we had booked three rooms separately, and the only request was that I had a connecting room with my daughter and granddaughter. My sister also had a separate room and we requested she be nearby. All three of us were upgraded to club level. It was especially shocking because it was three rooms not just one. This is the second time I’ve been upgraded to club level. I’ve never made a specific room request, but I don’t know if that is the reason why I’ve received this upgrade twice.

The two are not connected. I have a friend that used to assign rooms for Disney. Pixie dust is always about solving a problem for Disney.

We were upgraded at BWI to club level because there are 2 of us. They needed our room for a larger party and moved us to the cottage garden rooms because they are designed for 2 people. We were chosen for the upgrade because we are 2 adults, married that can share a king bed. They had to rule out anyone with more than two people or 2 people who didn’t want to share a bed.

There is no real way to work the system to increase your odds. It is truly them solving an issue with room occupancy.

If I recall your DD was only at AK for a weekend or short stay. That is likely the Disney Magic Pixie Dust trigger. They staff needed your DD's assigned room for a group of guests for a longer stay, and the 1Br on the CL floor was available for that short stay.

This type up upgrade is great for the guest(s) but is really for the resorts optional needs as @LoveDaisy just indicated.

I don't think it matters.
I booked a resort view at POLY (on a BB so maybe it has more to do with that...?) and requested higher floor in Rarotonga and was pixie dusted to CL a few weeks ago.
I was tempted to try for pixie dust again next year but opted to just go ahead and book the CL.
I'm also wondering if it has to do with Disney not getting as many bookings as they would hope especially at the Deluxe resorts so its enticing people to come back in hopes of an upgrade next time or to book the more expensive experience next time.
If so it worked lol.
