No more life jackets at the muster drills?

I have to admit, I'm with Jodie.

I fully understand 100% the need for drills to know where your muster station is. But I don't understand the need to take the life jackets out, sweat like nobody's business, faint or vomit from the heat (I did throw up once due to the heat during a muster drill), fight the crowds back to your room to put up your lifejacket, etc. Not to mention dragging the kids in theirs, while wearing yours, all over the ship.

I wouldn't mind leaving them in the room.

In a REAL emergency, every second counts! I want a life jacket accessible in my room, so if there is an emergency in the middle of the night I can put it on myself and be prepared. I don't want to be there having a scene from Titanic - - Hoping there is an available life jacket, figuring out how to put it on, trying to do so in a crowded area while someone yells instructions . . No - I HOPE that DCL will have the good sense to keep their safety drill requirements as is.

Regarding guests tripping over the straps: That's because some people don't have the good sense to put them on in their stateroom (and fasten them!) before heading to the drill. That is what DCL requests that you do. With the newer life jackets it's not difficult at all. Even after the drill, they ask you NOT to remove your life jackets until back in your room. THAT is for safety - so guests will not trip. But too many people can't follow that simple instruction either! :rolleyes1

You won't trip over the straps, but what about the small children that you can't see?

So far, the earliest date someone mentioned was November or December of 2009. I believe RCCL may have been first, Carnival? and Princess seemed to adopt this starting sometime in 2010. Just Wonder if DCL will make a Dream come true and Magic-ly do away with the life preservers too! Sorry!! :rolleyes1

as much as i would love to see the no life preservers for the drill i would still require my family to take them as we are traveling with kids. kids need to know what to do and how to prepare. to tell them they need it and not practice it kids will forget. not to mention unless the kids do swim lessons or boating alot most kids do not know how to get a life jacket on if needed.plus doing the drill with the required attire if there was someting to happen also drills into a kids mind the seriousness of the topic if something were to actually happen. its not jsut talk but like a practice tornado drill at home in school. but thats just my opinion

It's because it's required by law to conduct these muster drills, but I agree more on actually wear the life vests during the drills.

I disagree with Jodie because when muster drills are conducted, people are supposed to go to their stations. While Jodie may complain about the heat, which there isn't any, it is also for your own safety. You might say that you've gone through this more than a million times, and that you don't need anymore practice, but it is natural that someone who had also gone through this more than a million times to forget what to do because of panic. And if heat is your problem, then being in a real emergency will have to make you a Puke Machine now doesn't it? I think you will have to deal with it FOR YOU OWN SAFETY, but if nobody cared, then don't follow directions...

Panic can make the problem worse, so these drills actually prevent those from happening, because it refreshes our mind on the instructions that need to take order.

For the life vests, putting one on maybe easy and self-explanatory, but if it is not worn during the drill, and they forget to wear one during a real emergency, DO NOT BLAME US… :goodvibes

We did warn you about this… It's like at school, during earthquake drills, all the students MUST go under their desks and protect their necks from any falling objects, but in this case it's a life jacket to protect you.

These drills simulate a real sinking ship, therefore they want to make sure, for your safety, that everything WILL go well and that every directions ARE FOLLOWED during a real emergency. Showing up without a life jacket during the drill is like showing up without a life jacket during a real emergency.

Sorry if my post is too long… but I hope some people will agree with me! :goodvibes

On my last cruise (Carnival), we did not put on life jackets, however, crew members did show us how to put them on. :thumbsup2

You don't have to don the life vest on an airplane though.

Even if they did, it's also very helpful to put these people in that situation, so they can actually do that themselves, and for those who still needs to know how to put them on, then good for the demonstrations…

Showing may not be enough, as to some people without a long attention span. :rolleyes1

So allowing their passengers to actually wear it, will let the CM know that they are doing it correctly...

You don't have to don the life vest on an airplane though.

Because they are contained in a special compartment under the seat, and they have to be inflated in order for them to actually be useable.

Also, accidental inflation is possible, and they don't want to spend money on getting a new one just because someone can't follow directions...

It's not up to the CM...Maritime Law no longer requires life jackets at Muster Drills, and Disney is following this rule to make their passengers feel more comfortable, although some, or many feel comfortable wearing life jackets to Drills.

I bet the people on the Titanic said "What are the chances we will need those!" They said even worse "not even God Himself can sink this ship!" I will take the chances of getting heat stroke over the chances of drowning....better yet my CHILD drowning! No thank you. I will take the life vest muster drill any day of the week because I will guarantee you, you have a cruise that did the muster drill with the vest and a cruise that did the must drill without the vests, the cruise that did the drill with the vest will have less complications and save more lives. It's just common sense and I will take common sense over chances.

I know the drills and life jackets are a *bother* as Pooh would say, but if in the million to one chance you need the know what to do...............the practice just may save your life.

Now before you sit at your computer thinking ....*ho I know all that*, think about the time you last went on a criuse and was trying to get the jacket on properly and/or helping someone you were with get it right????.or those other folks you saw on the stairs or wherever having a really hard time getting it right!.........wondering where should I be going???.........

I know they are not talking about stopping the drills at this point............but what if some dam fool entertainment/office guy figiures they know more then the maritime people do!!..and manage to get them stopped??? and what if there is a emergency???? the ship is rolling and pitching, lights may not be working right.......people in a near panic!...the practice time will save lives!

I am sorry....but the 20 minutes it takes to go though the drills just may save your life or someone elses! Those secounds can save lives in a emergency!

PS..........they only keep *some Life Jackets* at the muster points!

Just a old ex deep water sailors opinion !1

Thinking!........Sultana, +/-2,400 lost, Titanic, 2,228 lost, Fort Slocumm, +/- 3,000 lost, Empress of India, +/- 2,500 lost, Andrea Doria +/-58 lost, Morro Castle, +/- 400 lost, etc, etc, etc,

We're sailing Carnival this December and I read on their website that life jackets will not be required, but rather stay on deck after the drill and participate on the castaway party on deck :)

I'm surprised Carnival's not selling drinks at the muster drills...:rotfl:

Disney has always had higher standards with their safety drill than some of the other lines... like they have their muster drills BEFORE the ship leaves while some others have them within the 24 hours like they are required to.

& if you don't go to the Muster Drill.. they WILL call your name over the PA system (for everyone to hear...) and you will get a nice letter from the Captain stating that you were required to go and asking the reasons why you couldn't be there...

Good, it will teach the passengers who did not participate in a required drill, which doesn't take long BTW.

They have always done thing better without having it be required. And that is what makes them great. Even now, after all these years, Disney knows how to do business. And that is how they can charge more. Because you GET more....even with your safety! DISNEY ROCKS!

You might think so, but maybe Disney's hiding something from ya! lmao :rotfl::rotfl:

Like how they're hiding the progress of the Disney Dream's Construction. The their latest video came out, I already saw it months before it was posted on the DisneyParks Blog, so when they released it on the blog, they've done more on the boat!
