No more 20 percent merchandise discounts for PAPs

Do people really buy that much merchandise that the extra 10% decides another vacation or not? We bought ours for an upcoming trip and it was all about getting the waterparks, extra days etc so we could justify another trip. If it was all about the merchandise discount I would need to reconsider how much stuff I bought.

No, not at all. It's more a cumulative thing, a trend of reduced value overall. From a psychological point of view, it's easier to accept new perks than to have existing ones reduced or eliminated.

In the end, I'll accept the reduced perk and enjoy our great vacations -- exactly what Disney wants...

Just purchased my PAP's! Could care less about the discount on 'stuff'.

I've been housecleaning and I've got to get rid of all this 'stuff'!

Yes, a lot of Disney stuff....clogging up my closets.

Too many pins!

A couple of those DVC watches that came in the little suitcase box that were limited edition. One not worn at all....sad...they were over $100 each. Don't remember the exact cost but when I bought them I was pretty much willing to give an arm and a leg - big grin smiley here!

The $198 sketch Dooney purse....I carried it for quite a while and got loads of compliments --but I'm on to something else.

There is obviously quite a bit more, too much to list.

But I don't buy like I used to. I just enjoy the resorts and parks as often as I can. I've got my Mickey camera bag - the one the cast member at Hollywood Studios had to get a step ladder to get down off the display for me because it was the last one like it. So, photo pass - we usually pass you on by....

Dining discounts - we've done the dining plans - all except the high end one - there is no way I would ever survive more then a day on that one! Too much food and pressure to do it all and 'get my money's worth'. It's more important to just enjoy my trip, eat what I want whenever (still can't get an ADR at BOG) then to spend my days calculating to the last penny what my 'savings' are.

The premium annual is just a no brainer - it should not disappoint anyone. For us two trips in a year justify it. The price of 10 day hoppers no expiry is through the roof so to speak - is that inflation or just Disney's response to the popularity of their product? Hopper no expiry over $700 - 5 days each trip $350+. PAP - unlimited days in two trips $225. The regular discounted annual is also a great deal over 2 trips - just a few dollars more.

So Disney has not disappointed me. Nor do I feel gouged. I'm living the good life - vacation to Disney on my DVC at least 2 possibly 3 times in one year with a reasonable ticket cost. Even a reasonable food cost because I know what I like and I know how to use my DVC kitchen to manage the expense and still have some fun dining out Disney style.

You are right Judique, stuff is way overrated! Enjoy your PAP and keep your great perspective. The reality is that's why most of us purchased into DVC, to enjoy the parks and great Disney resorts. The stuff breaks, falls out of fashion or at best collects dust ... still like my pins though!

You've got it right, Judique! And the older I get the more I realize how right you are!

I can't help but feel disappointed about losing the added discount. We just got PAP for the first time this year, so we've been really pleased with the benefits and discount. We have definitely bought more merchandise as a result of having the 20% discount. We also bought our vouchers for next year as well, never thought they would have reduced the PAP discount...

I didn't realize it until I asked (we're on a trip home from WDW today), but the discount was good on items at the confectionary, resort stores (chips and other snacks, etc). It wasn't just souvenirs. Not real happy - they certainly could have applied the change only to new passes, not ones that have already been purchased. We bought PAPs in October, and vouchers to redeem next December. I was hoping to get some Mickey pretzels for $4 instead of $5. They were $3 not that long ago. $5.00 for 14 ozs. Can't you buy some cheaper steaks fo $5 a pound?

Can anyone tell me if some of the counter-service restaurants are still giving out receipts which have 20% discounts on merchandise until 1 pm? We were just there the last week of November and several times, my sister received receipts which had that discount offered? Or was it just a holiday promotion??

We got one on the 26th when we had lunch.

Never buy a lot of "stuff" at Disney unless out grandchildren ask for something specific, but it was nice to pick up a snack at the Werther's shop and save 20% rather than 10%. Not so much of a big deal on that type of purchase, but it was a nice "feel good" thing for Disney of give. Would have been nice if they had allowed all of us the 20% at least on the initial premium pass before changing it out.

My family just takes the mouse in my house for granted. Just so long as he doesn't eat all the cheese;)

I think that stinks and can see no benefit to getting the premium pass over the annual pass now :headache:

Except that the DVC PAP COSTS LESS than the DVC AP - at least until 11:59 PM Eastern tonight (12/31/2012).

Plus the PAP gives us the option to enter a water park, visit DQ or WWOS and we can play golf with no green fee at Oak Trail. With an AP, you pay for those options.

I certainly did not buy the PAP for the discount (sure it was a nice perk) but please! Disney is more than just the shopping and I can STILL get that shopping at 10% less than regular visitors after the first of the year. We bought the PAPs because they were cheaper than the AP deal and with visiting for at least 38 days within the year a pass was a complete no brainer in my book! Sorry those that purchased the passes for just the purpose of shopping feel so disenfranchised but since you did not sign a contract at time of purchase, I'm pretty sure you have some tiny print somewhere stating that Disney can change the benefits of the passes at anytime. Just think about how much money Disney is saving you since you won't shop or visit now, that's not really such a bad thing now is it?

:thumbsup2 I'm looking forward to stepping into a water-park or DisneyQuest with the sole purpose of spending only hour or two and then leaving. Without the PAP we've been skipping these activities all together as they just cost too much and I really don't want to be there for hours and hours.

I didn't buy the PAP because I don't like to pay for something well in advance of using it. For a family of 4 at $399 each thats quite a bit of money to leave in limbo for a year or so. Now Disney pulls the 20% discount and raises TiW $25. Smacks of greed to me. I'll hold on to my money instead of letting Disney hold onto it.

Yes I too think this smells of corporate greed. Still I will be renewing my Premier Pass since I live 30 min from DL and go to WDW about three weeks a year. I was happy to see that DL is keeping their 20% this year.

Aan1701: unfortunately Disneyland eliminated all merchandise discounts as of 12/31/2012. It's on the website.

I know people who are at DLR right now and are getting the discounts with no problem. All the CM's I know say they haven't heard of any change in the AP discounts at Disneyland.

Can you post the link to your information?
