We will be in Vancouver for a few days before our cruise. We would like to hit up a farmers market or two, so will need some cash. We have a US Bank debit card, which is part of the visa/plus network. Any fee free ATMs in Vancouver?

Not likely. Canadian banks like to make their money like American banks do. Probably a 3.00 charge per transaction at least.

I setup an account with an online only bank called Aspiration and simply transfer what I am willing to spend to them.

They refund all fees that other banks charge and they don't charge any foreign ARM fees beyond what Visa charges, even with that charge the exchange rate still always works out better than ANYWHERE else I have found and it works everywhere around the world that has an ATM.

Worked wonderfully on Canada, but I realistically found that I really only needed about $40 cash in Canada for a week for two people by just using it as a Visa everywhere that takes card.

I'ts not fee-free, but we like to use the "green machine" ATM just up from Robson on the way to Sutton Place Hotel. Reasonable charge and on the way to the Japadog cart in front of Sutton. :)

We are headed to the West End farmers market on Comox on Saturday for sure and perhaps a different one on Sunday as well.

Do you belong to a credit union? Ours has a low fee for exchanging US money to foreign currencies. I am sure credit union fees vary but we pay a flat $14. regardless of how much or little money we are exchanging. We used cash in Canada for tips, cabs and food trucks. Saved the reminding money to give to the tooth fairy who likes to give "special" monies for "special" teeth. :)

We have an account with Bank of America. We can use Scotia Bank ATMs with no fee. There are many branches in Vancouver. We live in Seattle and go up to Vancouver quite often and they have had this relationship for several years

We have accounts with TD Bank and use ATMs for free at TD Canada Trust locations. No ATM fee and no exchange fee.

Enjoy your cruise!

Your credit cards may charge a foreign transaction fee for every transaction in Canada. You may want to check if any of your credit cards do this and avoid using them outside the country. I found my Nordstrom Visa and Amazon prime Visa do not charge these fees. All of my other cards charged these fees of 2%+.
