There seem to be a lot of posts lately with this in the title. I suppose that means that if I disagree I shouldn't post? :confused3

I think it means it is ok to disagree but.....

1. don't try to change the person's mind
2. don't make the person feel badly for feeling the way they do
3. don't turn the thread ugly.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I feel a little bad about how the thread for Indigo parents went. I mean, I know there was a lot of joking, which gave way to a rather extensive debate (which I was part of). She posted because she wanted to talk to people who believe in the whole Indigo thing. I think for her, belief in the Indigo stuff helps her get through tough things she has going on in her family with her daughter's illness, which is really no different from having faith in other beliefs. The problem is, the concept is so out-there that people have a hard time taking it seriously. There are things I believe in that I know the majority does not, so I don't discuss them on the DIS. IF I wanted to discuss it, I would find another board where people are going to understand and be like-minded. Throwing supernatural concepts that star ill-behaved children out there on the DIS, I'm sorry to say, is kinda asking for it. Most people don't believe in the supernatural and nearly everybody hates bratty kids. Baaaad combination!

Perhaps people should consider starting a separate thread when such topics start. I know I would like to add comments on the declawing thread, but I'm trying to respect the OP's request. I simply do not agree with her! Perhaps when somebody specifically requests "no debates" it should be with the understanding that it is open-season for DISers to start another thread debating the topic. Maybe that would be a way that we could all respect each other's needs. The OP can talk about what they want to talk about without having anybody disagree and the DISers who would like to joke about and/or dissect the topic can go ahead and do so. Just an idea!

I'm not sure I agree. If "no debates" mean that I'm allowed to disagree, but I can't try and change the person's mind or make them feel bad, then all I would be saying on the declawing thread would be: I disagree.

I wouldn't be allowed to say why, because that would be trying to change the person's mind. If I cite studies, vet opinions, and my own concern for the cats, the OP would no doubt take it that I was trying to make her feel bad. There really is no point in just going on a thread to say, "I disagree" without stating your reasons. And the second you state your reasons, I think it turns into a debate.

That's just a big ole sign that tells me to KEEP OUT of the thread and not go back until it's locked. Life's too short to get your panties in a wad on a Disney message board and usually something in those threads ignite my temper and "mean Lara" comes out.....I don't like "mean Lara"...she's scary.

:confused3 Can we debate this topic, or is it not open to discussion.

You can disagree, you just need to do it respectfully, and without flaming the OP or other posters. :thumbsup2

Correct. Agreement, pixie dust and hugs only or stay out of it.

But that's soooooooooooooooo subjective.

I agree with you totally. I read through the Indigo thread yesterday b/c I had never heard of the label before. I saw much snarkiness and hurt feelings on both sides (honestly, I thought your responses were well thought out and were not intended to make anybody feel bad :thumbsup2 ).

In general though, I agree with you that it should be ok to start a seperate debate thread on a topic where the OP has requested no debating. I've seen this happen in the past on the board where the OP (not speaking of anyone specifically, I've just seen it happen several times) of a thread like that will get upset if someone launches a new thread about it to discuss an opposing viewpoint. However, since it is the Community Board, there are all different people in our Community who share all different kinds of opinions and beliefs, the people who don't agree should be free to start their own thread on why they don't agree.

Just my thoughts. If anyone doesn't agree, you have my permission to start a new thread on it. :)

I agree with this sentiment...and IMO don't post on a public message board with a topic you know to be somewhat controversial and expect not to perhaps hear an another side.

I agree it shouldn't be done in an attacking way...but in the real world I wouldn't expect for someone to never encounter someone else with an opinion different than their own....

*If* you are only interested in a one sided discussion, there are millions of forums designed for specific topics where you can experience only like-minded people. This is not one of them.

Thank you. Now why didn't I think of that

Yes, yes and yes.

It means no dissenting opinions for the most part, but please no ugliness.

Generally it means the OP doesn't want to hear any other points of view, even though they would probably never actually come out and admit that. ;)
