No Cell Phones in the Parks!

I love my iphone. I love having internet on my iphone. I love looking at my iphone while in line for rides or waiting for a show to start.

If people want to think I'm an iphone zombie, that's fine. Being able to share pictures on Twitter or Facebook while I'm in Disney World adds to my enjoyment of the parks. That doesn't mean I ignore the people I'm with or the environment I'm in.

I used mine so much my battery was dead by 1pm (luckily I had an external charger and charged back up). Used it for taking pics, checking wait times, FP+, and checking Facebook. It was just me and a friend tho. My next trip will be with my sister and her family. I am sure I will be loaning my phone to a kid so they are able to make it through the longer standby lines. I have no problem with this either. We'll have lots of togetherness at meals and playing in the pool at the resort. To each their own though. If others don't want to use their phone more power to ya. I admit I'm addicted (a little nervous how I'm going to survive and upcoming week long cruise) but not really something I care to change at this point in time.

Not really advice. I think I know how we will handle it, since we will HAVE to bring them for MDE. But it's just a discussion on the subject, though I could find good ideas and adapt our plan.

But you said...

When I wrote it, I was really aiming to see what kind of "rules" other families have about cell phone usage.

If that was true, then why not, you know, actually craft the OP, the thread title, and your subsequent posts as, "What are your family's rules for cell phone usage?" rather than, "Are we the only ones who don't bring phones? Ha, iPhone zombies! After all, what's important is staying with your family the whole time. You shouldn't separate AT ALL, not even to go on different rides, so who needs a phone?"

:confused3

I would give you a thumbsup but I'm on my smartphone at the moment and can't. Fun irony there. =)

Its just that in a theme park there's usually no reason to do anything but hang out together. Spending time next to your family is more important that splitting up because someone doesn't want to do one ride or another.

You seem to have very definite ideas as to how other people should behave on their vacations.

I rarely see a post re: "am I the only one who...." where the poster isn't seeking validation for their superior stance.

My mistake was saying 'spending time with your family is more important...". It should have been 'spending time with my family is more important..."

I just meant that's how we view it, and not that all people should look at it that way.

I like to bring my phone just in case we lose each other for some reason. Also, I like taking pictures on my phone!

Disney has made it clear it wants you to bring them.

Yep. I usually have had mine on me, but it used to spend more time in a backpack or purse (i.e. not being used). I prefer not to be on it during vacation, unless I'm using it to take a picture. However, Disney has made it clear they want phones to be used more, and I will likely have it out more on trips with FP+/MDE.

I even see people whipping out tablets as they get off 1 ride to figure out where they need to be next.

TBH, it's tempting to bring a tablet instead of use my phone for MDE. MDE drains my phone battery more quickly than any other app I use. I'd rather have it drain my tablet than drain my phone, since the phone is necessary for splitting up/meeting up again.

Don't get me wrong, I use cell phone on vacation to navigate, find restaurants, etc.

When you have a child that doesn't meet the height requirements, sometimes splitting up is necessary. That doesn't mean family time isn't important :confused3

I'm a poor example because I don't even have an I-Phone and don't really want one. I talk on the phone way too much at work and when I'm out I have no interest in looking at a phone. However DH and DS have them and I only ask that they not fool with them while at meals. I hate sitting there eating while others play on their phones. Call it a pet peeve.

I don't care what others do though. I would prefer if they don't run into me like a lady one time who crashed into the bench I was sitting on because she was so busy texting.

Nope.

Without the ability for me to do some work on my phone from time to time (bus rides, a few minutes before dinner, waiting on a show, etc. I would be too backed up to ever be able to take a week off.

Additionally, as I am sure others have mentioned, using your phone now is almost essential to remaining flexible as it relates to ADRs, FPs, etc.

I get where you're going with it, but at this point, it's near impossible not to take them. With MM+, you're handicapping yourself if you don't take them.

Also, with the crowds the way they are, DW and I lose each other at least once every trip and have to call each other.

I figure the best I can do is switch it to vibrate/silent and put an away message on my voicemail. That works out pretty well.

I suppose that I'm one of the few archaic luddites who agrees with the sentiment behind the OPs feelings on the subject. But as many have stated, MDE has made carrying a cell phone or tablet imperative in order to manage FP+ with anything that approaches efficiency. And I don't like it. Not one little bit. Up until our last visit we locked our phones in our safe at the resort for the duration.

On the last visit, we had to bring it to use the app. And the undependability of using said app led to a lot more frowns than smiles most days. However, aside from using the app, the phone stayed in the pocket. We actually wear watches. We use cameras. We would rather talk to each other than surf, tweet, or play games. We prefer to experience the world in person in real time versus through the filter of an electronic appliance.

But we're a dying breed, and we know it. I don't really care how other people depend on their phones, as long as they don't walk into me asthey attempt to walk and text at the same time.

My cell phone is my life line to my family and on 24/7/365 2 kids in USMC and an elderly Aunt in NY and DH is over road trucker Not everyone is checking Disney stuff or trying to ignore other family/friends You just don't know everyone's personal reasons whatever works for you* (* you in general )

The phone goes where I go. I'm a small business owner and MUST be available to answer clients or mitigate problems 24/7.

I'm on my phone a lot for work when we are at home. At WDW, we keep our cell phones with us in case we are separated and need to contact each other or our families elsewhere need to contact us, but other than that, we absolutely try to limit cell phone use at WDW. It is a time for me to put down the phone and focus totally on DD. (Occasionally checking wait times on an app before we go to another side of the park is pretty much what I try to limit it to during the day).

Unfortunately, WDW has ruined that. On our last trip, we got the joy of MDE/FP+. MDE is glitchy and rarely works. Also, if it does work every time, you try to change a FP+ it pulls up different times, so you may have to try to make the change multiple times before you get the times you want. Sometimes you have to keep moving the FP+ closer to the time you want and try again, to get the times you want to come up. FP+ makes you plan too far in advance, and when you get there, we found some of the times don't work, or you don't want to waste a FP+ on something that has no line when you get over there. Because MDE is glitchy, I spent a ton of time messing with my phone trying to get it to work and things to change. Because it works better from the resort, than in the parks, one evening I spent an hour at the pool trying to switch our next day to EPCOT from MK, instead of playing in the pool with my daughter. It got to the point where DD (7 at the time) started getting upset and complaining about me being on the phone so much. We also about got run into several times by people using their cell phones trying to work MDE instead of watching where they were walking. We are all pretty unhappy that WDW has elected to tie us to our phones.

Disney WANTS you to use your smart phone as part of the experience
The cameras on the phones these days are so good that many people use them and it is one less thing you have to lug around with you

My Iphone has replaced my camera. So it goes with me.

I agree with the above. My smartphone camera is amazing. I dont use my regular camera anymore. Less for me to carry around the parks! Its handy to have everything all in one: camera, text/phone, and internet capability. :thumbsup2

Phones are a must with my son and I, just in case we lose eachother, I want to be able to reach him. Plus, I like to keep track of my FP+ rides and would often switch them around.

Is this a real thread? I don't go anywhere without my cell phone. Emergencies happen. Coordinating groups happens. Needing to change my FastPass happens.
