No Buy January

So far I am doing OK. DH put gas in my truck over the weekend $80 :scared1: - budgeted

I forgot to budget for DS eye glass repair $30 - but DH is babysitting his cousins kids today and will make $50 to cover cost.

Had to buy windshield wipers - $12 did not budget but DH babysitting money will cover cost.

Spent $17 on groceries - budgeted.

I made $26 this weekend by taking some stuff to Once upon a child and play it again sports.

Now I have to return a DVD to Target today without looking at Clerance stuff. Must be strong!!

1/1 $0 :thumbsup2
1/2 $0 :thumbsup2
1/3 $51.49 groceries (within budget) :thumbsup2
1/4 $31.xx groceries (still within budget) :thumbsup2
1/5 $0 :thumbsup2
1/6 $0 :thumbsup2

Taking our dog to the vet today, he has something really wrong with his leg, I'm really worried about him. I'm also thinking he is going to have to have surgery too. Our poor little guy. :sad2:

Wow, I was at work for a few days and dang, this thread is huge! It'll take me a while to catch up with everyone. That's totally awesome!:goodvibes

Saturday, I was on a tight schedule and let's just say the day involved a set of keys, my 3 year old, AAA and a $2.84 hamburger. Sometimes, you just have to know when to say "uncle!" At least it was a fairly cheap ouch. Other than the burger, I've stuck to groceries & gas:scared1: since the 1st. (Holy Cow has gas gone up since I last bought it.) I went last night to Kroger for all my double/triple coupons, but saved my milk, bread and veggie buying for the cheaper store. I also have to stock up some more on the $1 Peter Pan including 1 jar free thanks to yesterday's coupon!

Let's see if I can catch up my dates:
1/4-$0:thumbsup2
1/5-$2.84 hamburger
1/6-groceries w/list & gas
1/7- will finish groceries for the week

I hope everyone has a great week!:goodvibes

Well this weekend didn't go so well.

1/4 ~ Spent $17.xx at Alidi for groceries and $64.xx at Target for groceries ($20.00 was for cat food and liter, which I didn't include in my budget).
1/5 ~ Went to the grocery store and spend $78.xx. Which put me $59 over budget on groceries. I brought some meat and cereal that was on sale that I didn't need too. Between that and the cat supplies that put me over. I will be able to make up for it this week, because I won't need any groceries except milk, bread, cheese and lunch meat.
1/6 ~ I know today is going to be a bad day. Had to take DH truck in and that is going to cost us $288 which was totally unplanned. The good thing is that if we would have let this go it would have been a much greater expense.
I also have to spend $24 on DD dance class which is a planned expense.

The rest of the week should be a no spend.

Next week I am going to sit down and really look at the amount of unplanned items I am spending my money on. That is what is really putting a monkey wrench in things.

Here is to a good week to everyone else!!!!

Oh (insert expletive here) FORGOT about the college bill. DUE TODAY!!! Thankfully they took credit card payment over the phone. BIG SIGH...what's another 12 hours of overtime?

Just got home from Christmas break last night - I am SO IN!

I will make my list ASAP and start keeping up with the thread!

1/5 - $6.65 at cleaners (in budget). Got 5% discount for paying cash upfront.

1/5 - $52.02 at Aldi for majority of my monthly groceries. Packed everything in my suitcase and wheeled it home in the melting snow. Ugh. :scared:

1/5 - $9.93 at Chicago Produce for a few more groceries. Much easier to just walk across the street! ;)

1/5 - $3.00 out with friends for tip money. Roomie picked up my tab, and we figured we evened out since she owed me some money. :teacher: (OT - the smoking ban in Chicago is AMAZING!!!  :worship: It is a pleasure to go out again!)

1/6 - $0 :thumbsup2

I've got a freezer full of food that I cooked up, so besides the errant avocado or such I may purchase this month, I'm pretty much set with groceries.

I'm hitting up the CVS again today and probably tomorrow for assorted food items, toiletries, and cleaning supplies, hoping to keep it under $5 or so OOP. I'll be posting more on that, later!

1/7:
CVS spent $7.xx then refunded $9 when one ECB didn't print then re-rang with ECB as discount and spent $5.xx So whatever that concoction works out to be! LOL Got:
20 Soy Joy
1 Excedrin
1 Contour
1 Colgate TB
1 Colgate TP
1 Palmolive dishsoap
1 Keri Lotion w/ bonus bottle
2 Reeses Whips

Walmart $0 on 1 jar PB

DH sprang for pizza hut lunch from his Christmas money from his parents. $20 for that and it will also be enough for dinner as well.

Lowes: spent $90.xx on things we needed for the house. Since the dishwasher is being installed for free and I figured out how to install the cabinet we are actually under our $100 monthly figure for these things. :cool1:

actually nothing outside budget was spent so that's pretty cool!

Going to return some things to Gymboree tonight which will leave me with store credit but the kids will need clothes eventually so that works for me.

1/6: forgot that I spent $42.79 on Tracfone mins. I realized I can cancel my verizon phone as of the 13th so I wanted to be prepared with mins on the tracfone.

$35 of that was allotted in the budget so I went over by accident since I thought the code I used worked (it didn't) so that's $7.79 over budget on that.

Here are my Budgeted/expected expenses:

- Tithing (actual 10% of salary) and an extra $20 for offering (goes towards helping the poor in our church)
- Rent
- Car Payment
- Electricity
- Gas
- Groceries
- Household (cleaning products/toiletries)
- Medical
- Cable
- Cell Phones
- Entertainment (this is our eating out and birthday money - though it is tiny this month, because we upped our savings goals)
- Savings
- Credit Card: The TOTAL bill (we don't carry debt, just use them for the points) is about $350, but this money is from our Christmas savings, so not really a january expense just needs to get paid this month

Yesterday I spent $4 to go to a friend's kids wrestling match.
And we bought a few odds and ends of grocery or other household necessities at Walmart for $45.

Today is a $0 day since we stayed home and enjoyed the unseasonably warm weather.

1/1 $0

1/6 $5.25 carwash
$40.00 church -- forgot to budget
$19.88 workshop project
$28.84 household items - comes out of my grocery budget
1/7 .60 cents late charge at the library
$43.75 Jeep tag -- forgot to budget for this too

DH is onboard and doing incredibly well at work with this No Spend budget. He's been taking his lunch to work for the first time in years, including taking some drinks. He is not a sandwich eater, nor does he like leftovers, so I've been creative in coming up with ideas of food to send in his lunch that he'll eat. He works 12 hour shifts also, which makes it hard to send enough food, snacks, drinks, etc. But he only works 15 days each month which is great.

We bought a new home last year, so it's difficult for me to stop the home decorating that I've been doing. :) I resisted several items I really wanted when we went to the city on the 4th, but did cave and bought one small item I didn't budget for. I am very new to these No Buy months, so next month I will allow myself a small monthly allowance for decorating. :) There were several other things I didn't think to budget for this month since I've never read any of the No Buy threads till this one, and didn't really know what to expect.

Thanks everyone, for the ideas and support. This is really going to save us some money!

1/7 $0

I thought I was going to have to buy some gatorade today for my sick ds, but I can't really take him out so I ran over to ask my neighbor if she would buy some while she was out today (I would give her money) and she gave me some she had :cool1: .

Thank heavens for nice neighbors!

I finally stopped at CVS and picked up some pullups. I am trying to figure out where my pull up coupons have gone, they aren't sending them to me anymore. I'll have to sign up again ... but I love that coupon. I also bought some soap and Julie some candy. I want to really try this CVS thing ... so I am going to be biting the bullet.

Tomorrow is my first real day off in three weeks. No Christmas, after Christmas shopping or birthday this week. Just CLEANING. I can't wait to use my new vacuum. It's just sitting there, I swear it's saying "Hey, lady, do you ever not work?!?!"

I think I may sign up for a PO Box tomorrow, with the move and everything. Plus, our postal worker doesn't seem to be very competent ... and is always giving our neighbors our mail. We never ever had a problem with this at my parents house, but since most of the houses are empty ... I am wondering if I've been getting all of our mail. Luckily the girl next door is our only neighbor and has been giving us the stuff she's/he's been goofing up on. And, I just like having a PO Box since my roomie is pretty nosey.

1/1 - $0
1/2 - $37 (birthday!)
1/3 - $66
1/4 - $0!
1/5 - $30 ( completely unplanned)
1/6 - $0
1/7 - $23

It looks like I am getting a no spender in every other day. Gotta get some of them together!

Well today is my first official day of not spending since I was on vacation. Now, however, I am back to the every day. :sad1: I really didn't want to go to work today!!

1/7 $0

My family wants to do the no buy January but does that mean that you can't plan your trip to WSW in May that we need to make reservations and pay for plane tickets...

Also do new glasses count against you in the no buy.

I am new to no buy....

Guess what I had to do... Our washer went on the fritz on Saturday night and today we had had a repairman here. Guess what happened they told me that the repair price was 925.00 and tax. So, we payed the 75 dollar fee for the visit and I went commando on line looking for a new machine. I did tons of research in 5 hours; what I would typically do over weeks. Then after a MD appointment I bought a new washer from sears and it gets delivered tomorrow. I got one that is high capacity and low water use. So it will save some dough on the wash. Also it will cut our wash time down since the washer is 25% larger than our older unit. This time I bought the extended warranty for the unit.
So I guess that I blew my no buy for this month between this and my eyeglasses. I am going to try for next month.

Vet today was $386.58....sooo not in the budget! :headache: But, the good news is that there is nothing majorly wrong with our dog!

I have the grand poohbah whopper of all falling of the wagons:

Septic tank died over the weekend. It's 40 years old, most last for 30 years.

Cost for new tank, lines and leach field: $6,000-10,000.

No, that's not a typo.

And I have to pay it TOMORROW when they show up to replace it. Right now it's bubbling raw sewage onto the front lawn every time we run any water.

I am SO not liking this house anymore, that was ALL the money I had saved over the past year for my garage and then some.

Yippie kay yay.

Not.

Yesterday I returned some towels I bought on a whim at Target (yes, I buy towels on a whim!). I didn't need them at all, just thought I'd like some new towels. They were on sale, so 6 towels = $30 to me! :cool1:

DH bought a Dremmel tool to do the dogs' nails, but they weren't having any of that, so that's going back, too. Another $35 to me, and that was the one thing we bought yesterday that wasn't in the budget. Yay!

Today, to and from work - no stopping! It's my new goal to do my shopping once/week and work from a menu instead of "What sounds good tonight?" and then spending a ton at the grocery store.

Wow - this no buy thread is really helping me!!
