Day 6 – 3/3

Cast:
Alex—DH and stepfather to:
Caitlin, 13,
and me, Amy, official trip planner

No early entry for us this morning, we’re going to MGM again this morning. We all had our Tubbi’s egg mcmuffin and got ready leisurely. We caught the boat to MGM and rushed to the Rock-n-Rollercoaster, but they were stopping folks as they walked up. Not open yet…sigh. Cait was disappointed but I promised we’d stop back later.

We strolled past the big sorcerer’s hat and there were characters everywhere. Cait had broken down and gotten an autograph book a couple of days ago, but she didn’t want to wait in any lines to see anyone. Although she sincerely thought about waiting to see Stitch—but he had the longest line of all.

MGM used to be Cait’s favorite park, but we were a little disappointed this time around. It just didn’t seem to have much that we were interested in doing. I’d have liked to try the Backlot Tour as I’ve never been on that before, but it was being rehabbed. I made an executive decision to go for Sounds Dangerous. Cait was still being sulky about R-n-R but I dragged her over there.

As you walk in the CM’s announce SEVERAL times that a big portion of the show is in complete darkness. The minute the lights went off, we heard screams from children all over the theater. Even with the headphones on. People were rushing for the doors. All the screaming freaked Cait out and she latched onto my arm like I was leaving with those folks! I do like this show—I love the part where he’s getting a haircut and it sounds like you are, as well. Then, next to me, I hear a cell phone ring. This woman proceeds to answer the cell phone and have a conversation for the entire show. Hello, we can still hear you! It amazes me how rude people are sometimes.

The park was really empty today—no lines for anything. We went on Star Tours and Muppet Vision 3D again. We stopped by the little bookstore near the Muppets and met the most wonderful cast member. He was a sweet older man who asked if I was Caitlin’s sister. When I called him a silver-tongued devil, he laughed and told me that’s what his wife always calls him! Alex was hunting for a book—I tried to warn him—and of course, even the bookstore only had a few regular titles. Everything else was children’s books and Disney related.

Cait was getting antsy so we headed back to R-n-R and it was open—no line and no fast passes. We all rode once and since I had warned everyone to keep their eyes open, I actually bought the picture. Alex, of course, looks bored but Cait and I look like we’re having fun. Alex went for a smoke break while Cait and I rode twice more. We got the back row once which I’m not fond of. It’s definitely too jerky back there for me.

We had a PS at the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater for lunch. I know a lot of people dislike this place, but we adore it. I always have to explain to Cait about the speakers. She’s been to the drive-in before but the sound always plays on a radio station. She and I ordered the drinks with the glow-in-the dark ice cube. This is one of my favorite souvenirs! Every morning, I turn it on and admire it for a bit and then turn it off again. It was very cool. We also enjoy the movie clips and love to make fun of them like one of our favorite old TV shows, Mystery Science Theater. These clips are just so hokey and all the women are “sex starved.” I got a BBQ chicken sandwich which I found a little bland, but ok. Alex got a burger so he was in seventh heaven. Caitlin got Space Mush from the kid’s menu (mac-n-cheese) with a side order of fries. Our server was a very nice lady and she took a picture of us in our little car. We had an excellent time here, as always.

Caitlin decided that she really wanted to do R-n-R one more time. Excuse me, I just had lunch, ma’am. I let her talk me into it hoping there would be a bit of a line to let me digest some, but no, we were right on the darn thing. I wish after you’ve done this ride once, they’d let you skip the pre-show. We knew the thing by heart now. Rock on. I managed to keep my sandwich down and Cait was now agreeable to heading back to the hotel for a little rest.

After an hour or so at the Dolphin, we decided to go to Downtown Disney. I’d told Alex about the Virgin store down there in the hopes that he could find a book and the kid was up for any gift store anywhere. We caught the bus and got off at the Pleasure Island stop. I enjoyed all the items outside Planet Hollywood as you walk in from the bus stop, particularly the topiary from Edward Scissorhands. We stopped for a drink for Alex & Cait at a little stand—Alex had an iced cappuccino and Cait had a fruit smoothie that we all tried and decided was way too sickly sweet. She felt bad that we’d bought it and she didn’t like it so she kept trying to finish it even though she had my blessing to throw it away.

We stopped at I think it’s called Staribilia—it had all sorts of movie items like costumes from Gladiator and Braveheart and autographed items, etc. It was very cool to look at but way to rich for our blood. I did consider an item that had Hogwarts letters used in the Harry Potter film, but eventually I came to my senses and got out of there.

Virgin Megastore—you enter and there are DVD’s and CD’s for as far the eye can see. A sign says the books are upstairs so we rode the escalator on up (an attraction in and of itself for Cait & Alex who hop from step to step). I was so disappointed—there are a lot of shelves for books, but not many actual books in this place. It was just awful. So now it’s official, there are no books available at Disney. If you are reading, you are not spending money! If any of you all know of somewhere within the Disney transportation area in which books can be purchased, please let me know for future trips. Alex found one book he found marginally interesting—that’ll have to do. He should have listened to me and paced himself. I still had 3 left to read.

We wandered around a little more. I picked up some Christmas ornaments at the Christmas store. I do this on every vacation to anywhere and it always makes such a nice reminder. I did notice that the WDW 2004 ornament was really nothing to write home about but I got one anyway because I like to have the year on it. In retrospect, I wish I’d picked up a Nightmare Before Christmas ornament that we saw at the Villains Store at MGM earlier. We just LOVE that movie.

Cait was still feeling a little tired so we made an early day of it. We headed back to the lovely Dolphin and of course, sigh, Tubbi’s for dinner. I had fried chicken with roasted potatoes, Alex had the pork loin, and Caitlin (Surprise, surprise!) had a grilled cheese with a pucumber.

We watched Illuminations from the balcony again and headed off to sleep. These short days are very enjoyable—none of us is feeling like we’re trying to do too much.

Another nice day.

And I love the Sci Fi for it's burgers too! My mouth is watering just thinking about having one (how many more days to go???). I bought myself a glow cube too. It was just too cool to pass up. (Silly but true).

And I always bring 2-3 books with me on a trip and DEFINITELY try to pace myself!

I can do RnR but wonder if I would be able to do that on a full stomach....never mind an empty one....will think about the timing......thanks again for recaping your vacation
