NJ & Sandy

Lost power around 615. Apparently, they ended up shutting the whole town's system down around 830. The town I teach in is out as well. Guess my kids get out if their test on friday.

Checking in from the West Essex area. We lost power about a half hour ago. I'm hoping it was one of those planned ones a guy from PSE&G was talking about on tv. He said once water recedes it would be much easier to get power up again in planned outages than when a transformer blows or something.

I thought we were going to get lucky. Darn.

We have just had very large pines fall but luckily just into the street.

On a side note...my Aunt, niece & nephew live in Breezy Point, NY and we had to beg them to leave. The entire area is under 7+ feet of water and houses are destroyed. The cars are floating in salt water so they are all gone. Morning brings another high tide.
Just makes me remember without each other what do we have?

If you can spare a prayer I know they would so appreciate it.

The wind has stopped. Is it over? Can I take the dog out without fearing that a branch is going to crush us?

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers... Breezy Point was hit so hard and now the fire? I'm praying for all those people. We have family in Queens, Long Island and all over NJ.

Thinking of everyone is the hurricane's path this a.m.

Heard Bergen Co. had some flooding woes--news said a levee but CC said a berm (?) I have no idea the difference 9obviouslythe news does not either ;) )

Anyway, we have a lot of posters from Bergen Co. I'm praying for you guys!!

I'm concerned about Jersey Janice. I thought she might check in here. :(

We have been out of power since about 7:30pm. Had a pine tree start to come down next door, DH and neighbor tied it off to a tree nearby so it wouldn't pull our telephone and power lines down, and possibly hit our house. They cut it down this morning. Online with inverter power. According to power company 85% of township is out. Someone in DD's school said they went near the bridge nearest her school and they may out for weeks.
Curfew for our town from 6pm-6am.
Stay safe everyone,
Donna

:thumbsup2 Never hurts to be proactive!

So we're without power for at least a week. Im going stir crazy. At least my friends live next door and we can entertain each other a bit.

How's everyone else holding up?

No water in my basement and no trees down on my 10 acres of woods. But I do have every leaf in creation on my yard, driveway and pool deck. We lost power around 4:15 yesterday but had it back on around 1pm this afternoon.

We are very lucky.

Mercer County, NJ here too....we were without power for about 24 hours. We lost it around 8:30 last night and got it back at 8 tonight. Thank you PSEG!

We lost a bunch of stuff in our fridge/freezer and cooked on the grill tonight to use some of our meat. We have sprung a leak around our kitchen window during the heavy rains...but other than that, we made it through unscathed.

Lots of trees down or uprooted around here though. Just now catching up on the news and the pictures of the shore are awful! So sad. :sad1:

My goodness, that actually made my throat ache. I spent every summer of my childhood in Beach Haven.

The NJ barrier islands remain closed. Those of us with shore property have been unable to get off the mainland to assess the damage. We are hoping they are open tomorrow. All we can do is keep our fingers crossed and hope that our already ridiculously priced flood insurance will cover the damage.

For those who poo-pooed the danger of this storm, or thought it was hype, I hope these videos of the devastation has changed your mind. For us it's a vacation property we use, primarily, as a rental. For many these were their homes.

Just heartbreaking.

Not sure what county you are in, but Cape May county has been telling people that they won't allow anyone back until ALL CMCo shore towns are ready. Which means that even if one town is safe, they have to wait until every other town in the county is safe, too, even if they aren't on the same island. I understand waiting until your town is clear, but why should one town's residents have to delay the clean-up of their homes just because another town was hit worse. I can't imagine how bad the mold will be. And believe me, there is is a big difference in the severity of how badly Sandy hit the barrier islands, even ones in the same county.

Hunterdon county no power or water. :( today's goal is to find a shower. I think I found one.

I'm hearing 7-10 days.

The videos are heartbreaking. The Island wasn't a vacation spot for me, it was home. My grandparents went there during the Great Depression from NC to find work and they found it and stayed. The history that I have (pictures and things from old hotels and such) goes way back so LBI holds a very special place in my heart too. For years people talked and talked about the '62 storm. 60 years later, it'll be about Hurricane Sandy. :sad1:
Through it all, I think of Tucker's Island and how it no longer is even there. :sad2: At least LBI is still standing.

Video makes it seems like Seaside was hit even worse. God be with the people of NJ, coastal or inland and all those hit by this ferocious storm.

I'm anxious of LBIJim to check in.

My thoughts are with everyone dealing with the aftermath of this storm. :(

Has anyone heard from LBIJim?
