That's funny! CBS 3 preempted Dr. Phil today to cover this! LOL

So, was Golan Cipel the man McGreevey called when he broke his leg skiing? I had insider information that after the skiing accident, his boyfriend was called in or was at the hospital before his wife was.

Forgiveness Hell!!!

If I were his wife he wouldn't live till the end of the night. Coming out on national tv and resigning because of a gay affair. IMO that doesn't show a whole lot of respect for his wife. No respect at all. I hope he at least had a small shred of decency to tell her b4 the press conference.

I never liked the man anyway, but jeeze.

Though I can't say for certain, I'm pretty sure he told his wife before coming out on national television. Not for nothing, but I'm sure she's probably known for a long time.

Let's give the man a little credit because she didn't look all that shocked.

Well, it seems that there are several issues:
1. He's gay and didn't tell his wife that before they married (or at least I assume he didn't)
2. He had an affair with a colleague
3. That collegaue is now trying to blackmail him

The gay and not telling his wife part is their perosnal problem...too bad it's got to be splashed all over the news.

The affair with a collegaue is very poor judgement. When will people learn that work-based affairs between people of unequal power never work?! The more powerful always ends up int he position of being blackmailed or admitting something.

The other guy is a slimeball if he's really trying to blackmail or extort money from him. I always wonder if these things are consensual until the lover doesn't get what he/she wants, then suddenly they were forced or harassed.

Poor kids.

Word was that he was with Goran in Cape May when he broke his leg, and they had to fly in the wife and fly him out.

McGreevey broke his leg on Cap May beach - yes, he was with his lover and they actually had to fly his wife in. It was Christie Whitman that broke her leg skiiig.

I don't know the politics in New Jersey. I listened to it on the radio, and he sounded like he had little remorse.

Thanks! You're right.

They better not be showing any more of the Jersey Beach commercials where McGreevey has his arm around his wife.

Allright some thoughts from in S. Jersey. What an embarrasment. One report claimed that McGreevey's choosing of him for homeland security was personal. I am disgusted with the news coverage I'm seeing. Over and over again they said he will be a hero to gays everywhere for going public, and because he can identify with their stuggles. He even implied this in his farewell speach.
1. The man cheated on his wife, and perhaps his first wife.
2. He has 2 children, one from the previous marriage who are going to be himiliated over the publicness of this.
3. He had an affair with an employee, and every state employee is a subordinate to the governor. Bad form.
4. He allowed himself to be put in a position where he can be blackmailed. This puts the government at risk, and is one of the reasons often given for not allowing military and high ranking security people to be gay. Gay people should be upset with this.
5. He did not voluntarilly come out, confess his sins, etc... He only did this because he was being blackmailed.
6. I and probably other people wonder if he ever gave in to the blackmail before.
7. He is an embarrasment to the state.

Ya, it was running on the beach, not skiing - and the police departments down there have been talking about it forever.

How humiliating for his wife and children...:( I don't think I could stand there by his side without at least giving him a good kick in the ... well, you know.

I appreciate Tiggeroo's insight and her thought process, I agree on some of this, but I have to respectfully disagree on a few points.
1. Agreed

2. Possible humiliation to one's kids is really not a good reason to stay in the closet, and a lot of us have parents who have confessed to affairs, straight and gay. Trust me, the kids will live. My father is in jail for something a hell of a lot worse than being gay, it was very public, I survived. So will they. I don't like McGreevey, never have, but I'm not going to fault him for finally admitting the truth about something as personal as sexuality.

3. Agreed

4. This I vehemently disagree with. I don't think an increased risk of blackmail is a reason I've ever heard cited for discriminating against gays in security or in the military? That's a stretch, I don't think gays have cause for concern on that front. All of us are in a position to be blackmailed, for something that may or may not even be true. If you were a public figure, and someone threatened to say that you and your female best friend were lesbian lovers, could you really refute it? Could you prove that you weren't? No way. We're all at risk of being blackmailed.

5. I'm not sure we'll ever know all his reasons for finally coming clean, though clearly the suit pushed him over on it.

6. Good point.

7. Takes more than the failings of one governor to embarrass a state (hey, ask Connecticut! :) ) I'm definitely not embarrassed to be born and bred New Jersey. One of the richest in the nation, one of the best educated, progressive politics, relatively few children in poverty, free preschool, great produce, beaches, mountains, la da la da.

Well said on anwwer #7 danacara! :) If New Jersey is always getting such a bad rap, why do so many people live there? ;)

I think that a lot of New Jersians don't like McGreevy anyway, so this is not much of a loss. It doesn't bother me that he is gay, or anyone else for that matter. But it is inexcusable if you are doing bad things in office, and cheating on your wife and family! :(

It speaks for what kind of governor he was when NJ supports Kerry over Bush by nearly 20 points and yet most don't like McGreevey, a democrat.

Yup. My hubby is a policeman and told me this story a long time ago....in fact, DH sort of implied that alot of people knew about him being gay or bisexual for quite awhile....apparently many people in his inner circle (and beyond) knew about it.

but this whole thing makes me just sad:
1)How sad in this day and age he felt the need to resign about this.
2) How sad in this day and age that he felt the need to HIDE this from everyone
3) How sad that he probably would never have been elected governor if people knew beforehand.
4)How sad that he would betray his wife like this....whether it be a female or a male that he was having an affair with!
5) How sad that this guy was going to try to blackmaiol him over a consensual relationship! I bet the guy just assumed he would pay up, rather than "come out."
6) How sad that it took something like this for him to finally admit the truth.
7) How sad is it the amount of jokes I have heard in the last hour or so about this. Would people's reactions be the same if he had admitted an extramarital relationship with a woman????

I could go on and on about the 'sad" things.

I feel so badly for his wife....the humiliation that she must be feeling. I also feel bad for him. His sexual preference has nothing to do with how he ran the state!

Bobbi

Honestly, I doubt either wife was shocked - heck, most of Jersey knew he was gay. (I knew it and I don't even live there anymore!)

And I don't think he resigned because he was gay - I think he resigned because he was about to get sued for sexual harrassment by the aide. (At least that's what Mom said.)

How nice, though, that he timed his resignation so that there can't be a special election.

And like Danacara said, this doesn't make me any less proud to have grown up in Jersey.

I think the "fairy" comment was uncalled for. It doesn't matter if his sexual behavior goes against your values or not.

There are a lot of hurt family members in this saga, especially the governor's wife and his children, who have been publicly humiliated and betrayed. That's the unfortunate result of the actions here.

So what if the governor's gay? Apart from the family betrayal issues, which I will admit are HUGE here, who cares? As a representative of the 44 year old heterosexual female Republican moderate-to-conservative contingency from Colorado, I don't give a flip.

People deserve whatever happiness they can grab in this life, and if they find it with someone of the same sex and they aren't deliberately and deceitfully hurting others, then I say - go for it!

Possible humiliation to one's kids is really not a good reason to stay in the closet, and a lot of us have parents who have confessed to affairs, straight and gay.
No, the problem isn't that he came out. What I see as bad for his kids is that he was forced out due to an affair. That now every detail will be on the paper. Our news had been running family stats complete with marriage dated, kids names and b'days.
He didn't have to keep this secret. I understand why he did, but there are other openly gay politicians. I am not fully supportive of most gay agendas but I choose the person I vote on based on merit. I didn't like or vote for McGreevey when he was a straight happily married man. i have definitely heard that gays in the military pose a security risk, esp. if they get higher rank. Not saying I agree, just have heard it.
I'm proud to live in NJ. I love it here. But I'm embarassed when our public officials do stupid things.

What a sleezeball!! (Cipel)
