My 8 year old daughter has asked for a Nintendo Switch for Christmas. We also have a 6 year old. We currently don't own a gaming system, aside from their Amazon tablets.

Thoughts for this age group? Recommended games?

Thanks!

My daughter is 7 and we have the switch. It’s fantastic for Mario Kart and Minecraft (Minecraft for switch gets a special Mario Minecraft world and you can make your character look like Mario characters it’s cute) we have other game systems but switch is her favorite.

Switch is very versatile and appropriate for all ages with the right games.

My almost 19 and 26 year olds have them, as does my nine year old nephew.

The games mentioned are still loved by my older 'kids'.

My 8 and 5 year olds are in the next room playing Yoshi's Crafted World on their Switch right now. We also have one of the Pokemon games and the old emulators that you get for buying an online pass. I have been teaching them some of the games I played on my Nintendo 30 years ago when I was their age.

Thank you!!
Do I need to buy one for each kid or could I buy one with an extra controller?

I don't know much about gaming systems so please bear with me with the questions lol!

I agree with the two controller idea as you can technically play some things with one “half” of what it comes with (one kid uses red and other blue) but to do most things effectively it’s better to have two.

I bought one for them and will probably end up buying another set of controllers at some point. At $70 though I'm not running out to get it right away. A lot of the games that kids can play together only need half the controller.

We have one switch for 2 kids and an extra controller. We had it at home hooked up to the tv. I figured I’d get another one if needed, but they’ve been fine sharing and play some games together. Favorite games for our girls: Arms, Lego DC Villains, Lego Harry Potter(it’s an older game but still fun if they are HP fans), Animal Crossing, just dance series, Zelda breath of the wild.

We had 1 (the full one with the red and blue controllers) and had extra controllers. Both kids enjoyed playing on it hooked up to the tv.

Eventually, we bought the switch lite for my son since he wanted to play more games by himself. Now my daughter wants her own as well. So after this Christmas, we will have 1 original switch and 2 switch lites in our house.

So if you are unsure how it will go, or don’t want to spend the extra money, you could start with 1. But you might end up with more in the future anyhow.

Nintendo has the best selection of family-friendly games. Switch is a great system for that age group. My daughter (9 yrs old) and her friends like to play minecraft, smash bros., and mario games on switch.

Yes, go for it! Lego games are great for the kids. Animal Crossing is fun. Mario games. And you don't have to have online play for them, if you are worried about it.

get the extra controllers.

The switch is amazing ! We actually have 2 now since they came out with the animal crossing console - DS was 8 when we bought our first last year - DD is 14 - they have a ton of games that they play together - DD and I love playing monopoly! DS lloves the racing games ( cars, Mario, etc) And me (Dad) addicted to animal crossing ! I don’t miss a day ! Go for it ! One thing - along the lines, be prepared to buy a second set of joycons - they are made well, but from constant use some end up getting “stick drift) which is basically when the controller doesn’t work perfectly -

One more thing - target and bestbuy are constantly doing price drops on games and I’ve bought many for $12-$14

Can you even get them? My daughter got her's last week after being on a waiting list at Best Buy for 6 months. They sold out the minute the pandemic started.
Can't say about age groups, as my daughter is 29!
