Nikon D80

The Sigma 30mm is very good. Its also about $400. Nikon has a 50mm f/1.8 that is also very good and it goes for about $110.

The Sigma has the focus motor in the lens so it is recommended a lot of those with the D40, D40x & D60 which don't have the focus drive in the body. The Nikon 50mm f/1.8 doesn't have a focus motor, but the D80 & D90 have a focus drive so it works fine with these bodies.

I have both lenses. I like the 30mm better for Disney low light stuff because of the focal length. The 50 is a bit on the tight side, but will still do well, especially for its price tag.

For a zoom up to 300, I really recommend the 70-300mm VR lens. It is more expensive than earlier Nikon 70-300's or the Sigma or Tamron, but having VR is a GREAT feature, especially at the long end. With these lenses zoomed out to 300mm the lens get pretty long and makes it harder to hold it steady and makes for a lot of lost photos due to camera shake. The VR counter acts that and keeps the lens steady and you age more keepers. Its also a very sharp lens for its class and price.

When I went to Disney in '06 I used a Quantaray 70-300mm that I'd had for a number of years. I ended up with a lot of losts shots because of camera shake. So I went and bought the Nikon 70-300 w/VR. On our '07 trip it performed wonderfully and I got a lot more keepers. I also used the lens a lot for my DS t-ball games over the spring and summer. Also nice to have when we do a trip to the local zoo.

The 50mm f/1.8 Nikkor is a fine lens, for very little cash ($110 @ Beach/Buydig), *if* you have a camera with in-body focus motor. D80/D90 and up have the motor. D40/D40x/D60 do not. The Sigma 30/1.4 is faster (f/1.4 vs f/1.8), wider, and has in-lens motor, but currently costs almost 5X more.

how is that better when it's 100.00 more?
i already have a SD card.

Is buydig a reliable site? Ive never ordered anything off there before. Ive been researching sites (havent buydig yet) selling cameras because Ive noticed some great deals arent so great cause they come with just the camera/lens...no original box, manual, caps, etc.

You can get the same D80/18-55mm kit through Amazon for $749.99. Sold by Calumet Photographic. Never bought from Calumet, but they have a decent seller rating on Amazon. FWIW, B&H's prices are usually higher than most others.

The price has come down to $600 for the body- DD REALLY, REALLY wants my D50. What do I do? I really can't justify spending $1000 on a camera body(D90) right now but is it wise to buy a D80 that is a few years old when they've come out with a newer model? I've read a bunch of reviews on the D80 and a few have said it overexposes often. For any of you D80 users- have you found this to be true? I love my D50 and wouldn't consider a new camera except that DD really wants a Dslr and I don't really want to go with the D40,D40x or D60 because I have a collection of older lenses that we use.
DD wants to use the D50 for the Head of the Charles the middle of this month(she is a freshman at BU) which means mom(me) will be driving the camera and gear to Boston a day or so before then I'll have to go get it because I can't be without it for very long. I only live 30ish miles from Boston so its not a huge deal but still a pain.
Beach has the D80 w/18-135mm lens for $799
The D90 would be around $1300 w/ a lens.
Any thoughts?

What about a used or referbished D50?

keh.com has several that are under $400. They even have a few D70's that are under $300.

You can probably also find a few on ebay that are used. B&H Photo has a few D70s' used for around $400. Adorama also has a used D50 for $400.

I would go with keh.com first. I've bought a few use lenses from them. They are VERY good with their ratings and they have a very good return policy. You can buy one, get it home, snap a picture, then check how many shutter clicks that camera has and judge from there if the price was worth it. If you call they may even have the info already available.

They also have used DX lenses at keh.com. 18-55 for less than $100, 18-70 for around $200 and 18-135 for about $250.

Maybe a used D70 and the 18-135 for around $500. Then when she's done with school she can upgrade to a newer body if she wants.

If you really want to give your dd the D50 but can't afford the D90 (and who could after paying all that tuition? ;) ) then I'd say go for it. The D80 remains a great camera, and there are no doubt some deals to be had since the introduction of its successor. Not having used a D80 (except for messing with a friend's for a few minutes) I can't really speak to the overexposure issue except to say that many people say the same about the D300, and I haven't really found it to be the case. It definitely exposes more to the right than my D70 did, but the D70 had a tendency to underexpose, so I often kept the exposure compensation set to +.3 or +.7. You could just do the opposite with the D80 if you find it to be a problem.

A lot of people are buying "older" models in all the brands because they can be had for a good price. They'll still serve them well for a very long time. This is a nice option for those who don't necessarily have to have the "latest and greatest" (which probably won't be the case for very long anyway.) And all of them seem to have their little quirks, too, you just learn to work with them. So if you can afford it, then why not go for it? (If it were me, I might make it sort of an early "holiday gift" this year. ;) )

The introduction of a new camera, did not make the older camera any less capable. If the D80 does what you want, then get it.

I am quite happy with my D80. I have taken many, many fine pictures with it. I believe that is still a great and very capable camera. You should see many great years with the D80.

good luck.

I have had the D80 for 2 yrs. now and haven't had issues with overexposure. I read that it tends to happen with certain lenses, but I can't base that on personal experience - just heresay.

The D80 doesn't really 'overexpose' as much as the highlights are really easy to blow out. I found when the rest of the picture was exposed properly, the whites would blow. In order to keep my whites from blowing, I would have to underexpose the rest of the photograph and then recover everything in photoshop. Kind of a pain.

But my question is... do you shoot in full manual? Do you shoot in auto? What are you trying to do with your camera? If you don't mind a few pixels here and there blown out, it's a fine camera. I enjoy using it as my back up camera, or my smaller family camera, when I'm out and about.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I'll see how much of a pain it is to let her borrow the D50 and I'll also go check out the D80 at our local Ritz. The D50 and D80 seem similar enough that I'm sure the D80 will do me just fine if I go that route. Being in college she probably won't get a whole lot of use out of a dslr- she has a Canon A540 there with her. Then again I'll have to get her one when she does her study abroad. I can't give up my D50 for a whole semester! And I can't expect her to spend months in Europe with only a p&s.
I don't use full manual- I either use Program or Aperture priority- Shutter priority on occasion, mostly Program for everyday stuff, tho. DD uses manual. It seems the camera makes better decisions than I do most of the time:laughing:
I'll also look into a used D50- tho I wonder for the little extra $$ if the D80 would be a better choice. I'm always cropping so the extra mp's might be a plus.
I guess I'll have to decide how much she really 'needs' a dslr;)
I personally wouldn't mind a new toy:)
I guess its all about spending the $$ when we have 4 years of BU to pay for:scared1:
You know most of my friends would think I'm NUTS to even be considering spending another $800+ on camera equipment:laughing:
