Nikon D80

Have you looked at cameta camera? They have an Ebay store. They are a brick and mortor location near me. I have made purchases at their store as well as from their Ebay store. Never had a problem with them.

I buy a lot of stuff on ebay, but I stay away from electronics.

B&H has the D80 and 18-135mm lens for $999. D80 & 18-55mm VR lens for $869. Amazon is about the same price,,, D80 & 18-135mm lens for $991 and $869 for the D80 & 18-55mm VR lens. Amazon has free shipping.

There are a lot better places than ebay to get your electronics.

YECKIM is correct about the possible announcement. Strong rumors that on 8/27 the D90 is going to be announced by Nikon with a probable shipping date sometime in late September. Chances are the D80 will go down in price (it is 2 years old now and based on Nikon's past history a new one should be out very soon).

I'd be much more likely to buy a gently used D80 from an individual on eBa¥ than one of those packages. You'd have to be very careful and read feedback with a discerning eye to find a good seller, but it could be done, and you'd probably save more money -- and actually get what you buy.

I have a hard time with the blanket statement that you shouldn't buy such things on eBay, given that I've sold cameras that way myself. I've sold a Nikon N2020, an N6006 and a D100 on eBay. All the buyers seemed very happy with what they got. But you do have to use due care.

One clue -- I would only buy such a thing on eBay if the listing had good photos of the actual item, not just stock photos.

I think most of us were trying to say what you said (in bold). I looked at the the stock photos, the warranty for the lenses were for one year (when all three of mine came w/5yrs),saw that all three links she posted were the same kind of thing and IMO thought it was something best skipped. Didn't mean to imply she should never buy from ebay or from personal sellers on ebay.
That being said I wouldn't drop that kind of cash without a full warranty but that's because the second I did, something is sure to go wrong.:lmao:

OK guys I'm back! Thanks again for all the advice last time. I recently got a bonus at work and I think its a great time to splurge on a D80. I'm looking to get the best bang for the buck. I'm interested in spending around $1,000-$1,500. I'm not going to shoot professional stuff but I will be interested in taking low light shots. On a side note anyone hear information regarding the D80 dropping in price considering the D90 is about to launch?

Thanks in advance!

I would go for the D90. I do think the price on the D80 will drop and they'll probably go fairly quickly. The D90 is scheduled to be released for sale within the month, after that it will be harder to find the D80 new.

The D90 incorporates a lot of what the D300 has including the sensor and its higher ISO performance. Burst rate is also higher (3 vs 4.5) and its got live view which is handy for tripod work. The video feature of the D90 also looks pretty impressive from the few clips I've seen thus far.

The D90 is going to be priced at the same SRP as the D80 was 2 years ago.

I bought my D80 for $729 in May, so that was a crop of about $280 from when it debuted.

The D80 was originally released at $999 (body only) in Sept '06, the D90 is scheduled to be released next month with a price of $999 (body only). So you actually saved $170. This is a pretty good savings. I personally think, however, that there are $170 worth of upgrades and better features on the D90 over the D80. The D80 is a great camera and will continue to produce great images for years to come. But with the new improved sensor, live view, and that video feature (among a bunch of other things) I think its worth spending the extra over the D80.

Hmm I dont know its seems like the D90 is alittle too pricey. Keep in mind I do want to buy at least ONE more lens possibly two. The new features on the D90 sound impressive but I think for a person like me whom isnt taking pictures professionally should stay with the D80 (for the price) and maybe trade it in within the next few years for say the D90.

If you'll be shooting much in low light, waiting on the additional lenses might be worthwhile. As Kyle says, the D80 is a great camera and that won't change, but the D90 has (essentially?) the same raved about sensor as the D300. I upgraded from a D70 to the D300 earlier this year, and the difference in high ISO performance is really impressive. IMO it's not about whether you'll be shooting professionally as much as the type of shooting you'll be doing. I'm not a professional, but I prefer to shoot in natural light, and the D300 affords many more opportunities to do that with results that I like. In my case too though it's meant waiting on a lens or two that I'd like to buy.

On the other hand, there are people who would tell you that your $1,500 would be better spent on a D40 and some pro-quality glass, so what do I know ;)

Thanks for the information/opinion! No one has said that yet but Ive all but ruled out the D40 BUT the thought of getting a few lenses are tempting!

What price are you looking at with the D80 and lenses.

I've picked up 2 used lenses for my D50 (and will also be used on my next camera body) at really good prices. Good way to get some decent glass at decent prices.

Its looking like it would be a difference of $200-$400 depending on lenses. I'm looking to get a 300mm as a second lens. So the difference isn't that big the more and more I look at it. If I may ask Kyle, where did you purchase your glass lens used? By the way I'm from MA as well!

Ps. I'm paranoid when buying used on line!

Convince me please!

Im not Kyle but I have bought several lenses online and have been happy so far. I have ordered from Ebay and from B&H photo, with ebay I read real close and check users feedback and so far no issues.

There is school of thought which says that the quality of the lenses is more important in terms of image quality than the camera body, and there is no doubt a fair amount of truth in that. Plus, good quality lenses will generally last far longer than camera bodies, which are continually being upgraded. That said, though, new technology does make a difference in IQ, and that D300 sensor is awfully nice. And, FWIW, I think there are many great third party lenses available that are far better values than the comparable Nikkor versions, so I've opted to save a few pennies that way.

Good luck with your choice!

I've bought a couple of used lenses from KEH and Adorama and was very happy. Both provide rankings on their used lenses and I've read many times that KEH esp. seems to be conservative on their ranking. You also have a couple of weeks to try them so if you find you don't like them you can return - unlike most of Ebay.

I bought both my used lenses at keh.com. EXCELLENT operation AFAIK. They are very generous with their ratings and they do have some good prices if you know what your looking for.

I got a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 MACRO for $260, IIRC. New that same lens is close to $400. The one I got was listed a EX. When I got it I couldn't find anything wrong with it. Not a scratch. I also bought a 70-210mm f/4. That was $157. It came without any caps (front or back). I ended up finding a front cap for $6 or so on ebay and I had an extra rear cap. This one was listed as BGN: "Bargain" 70-79% of original condition. Shows more than average wear. May have dents, dings and a goodly amount of brassing and finish loss. Glass may have marks that should not affect picture quality. It has a few scratches, but nothing on the lens I can see. I've used it a few times for DS's t-ball games and the images are tack sharp.

B&H also has a good selection of used lenses.

I don't know where in MA you are, but Hunt's Photo & Video in Melrose has a big selection of used lenses in the store.

I did buy a refurbished 18-70mm Nikkor lens off ebay when I got my D50 and found it to be in great shape.

Ok so what lenses do you recommend for low light? Ive seen alot with this sigma 30mm f1/4, safe bet or is there something else better for the same price? Im also looking for a decent 300mm without breaking the bank any suggestions there?

Thanks for staying with me guys!
