I have had this camera for months now and I have no idea how to use it. Gasp, I know. It is for work and I need to get some practice shots and really figure out how this thing works. So, any advice on how to get started?

Use the auto setting. When my husband uses my camera, I simply teach him to set it to auto, line up the shot and shoot.

I got a dvd with mine, did your work get the instructional video when they bought the camera?

I got a manual, but no DVD. That would be helpful, maybe I should do a search for one. I really want to figure out how to manage all the settings, bells and whistles. Anytime I try to take a picture it tells me something about not enough light, but I need to take pictures in all different types of light. OK, I'm off to do a search for video tutorials

I just bought this camera. Check out Ken Rockwell's site, he has the info in a pretty ease to read format. :thumbsup2

Oh dear, thank you so much! He is a wealth of information and even has an 89 page user's guide that is so super easy to follow. I'm going to have to absorb this for awhile and then go shoot a few pictures.

Do not feel too bad. I met a woman today in front of Nemo and Friends that did not know how to take off the lens on her D80. In her defense, she never said if it was hers or her husband's. I overheard her telling her kids to wait a minute because the camera was not working right. I offered my assistance and she showed me that the aperture was just showing "--". I told her to try re-seating the lens and she had no idea what I was talking about. I showed her how to take it off and put it back on and that cleared up the problem.
