Nikon D3100....

Okay so today I bought the Nikon D3100 from Bestbuy. I bought it with a bundle = extra lens, bag/hdmi cord/8gb sd card...

i charged the battery

and so thereforth i played around with it a little....

The Nikon D3100 has a guide which helps you navigate the camera for first time users so it told me how to take pictures with soft balance background. It shows you an example photo on the left as you lower the aperture which i think is cool. it also shows you examples of pictures of people/cars in motion etc. It's very easy for first time SLR owners.

Here's my first time with the soft balance. On the lowest aperture with the lens that came in the kit.

:sad1: Sadly I can not bring my D3100 to disney this year since it is brand spanking new. but I'll bring it next year.

Why can't you take it to Disney? THat is a great place to learn the ins and outs of it. When I bought my D40 it arrived a week before my trip last year. I had no time to do anything with it before we went and literally learnt as I went along. It was my first DSLR too! But it was probably the best way to learn as there was so much opportunity for photos all the time. I think you should consider it ;)

my mom says it's too bulky and will get banged around in the bag if i go on rides or just walk around. :( Perhaps i can persuade her as days go on.

I take mine on rides all the time. In fact I am never without it. I find that having a bigger camera makes you constantly aware of it and less likely to bang it against something, drop it or leave it behind. If you have a good camera bag you will be fine.

Besides, if you don't take it with you on rides, you miss all those moments that sum up various aspects of the magic of your vacation

i am planning on bringing my nikon s6000 to the park. but i'll keep trying to persuade my mom.

I keep my Canon 50D around my neck with a Lenscoat Bodybag on it, even on rides. It's made 2 WDW trips and has been on Expedition Everest, Space Mountain, Mission Space, Kali River Rapids (OK, I put a plastic bag around it for that one), Star Tours (9 times the last trip) and a whole lot more. I take it hiking, boating, to scuba lake weekends, with me around town... Cameras were made to be used. Why spend the money if you're just going to keep it on a shelf?

I ma in love with my Nicon camera. I have managed to capture some unique moments. My camera is always with me when I travel with my beloved family!

Obviously, Mom is not a photographer!:rotfl2: We take our cameras all the time on every ride! Yes, even the water rides. I recently purchased Pentax' top-of-the-line prosumer camera, the K-5 (which is weather sealed) and a weather resistant lens. Since this camera and lens were designed to be in inclement weather, I have an idea for a shot of the water coming over the bow of the log at Splash Mountain. In two weeks, the DW (she's a photographer also) and I will be bringing three DSLR's to the World. Can't wait to get there and try the new equipment, not only on the water rides, but also the dark rides. Try to convince your Mom to let you bring the camera. You will regret not bringing it. Good luck. This is the equipment we brought in June, 2010.

my mom is just afraid that it will be bumped around or perhaps stolen since it is a nice new camera. But i think i got her to change her mind. now i'm looking for a bodybag for it between today and tomorrow. lol. i'm not THAT into photography yet but i do have a degree in Film. :) i took some classes in college on photography which was okay. but if i get more into it i'll buy more things for this camera and if i ever win the lottery i will get a top of the line camera. :).

i was considering a pentax after my penpal got one this year but i liked the nikon better. :)

It won't be stolen if you keep it on you at all times - and believe me you will. What I like about a big camera and carrying a bit of gear around with me is that you are constantly aware of having it on you. I had a little camcorder with me this last trip and honestly, the number of times I nearly left that lying around because I aborted a video clip in haste to grab my camera for a shot ..... (pictures will ALWAYS win over video for me!)

i'm not THAT into photography yet
I have always loved photos. But I can't say I was THAT "into" photography until I got my D40. It very literally changed the way I look at things and I take such different photos now to what I did before. It made me see things differently. I would expect that now that you have a good camera, you will get into it. But you need to keep it with you not to miss good photo ops ;)

I will also be bringing my flip slide camcorder..

i brought it last year and got awesome videos.
you can check them out on youtube under dizfan101. :)

We brought our D3100 on our last trip in May and I ended up using the built in video camera quite a bit. It's hard to beat 1080p.

Yeah but it being a brand new camera i'm not gong to take the risk that it will get bumped around on the rides.

So my mom will hold it when she doesn't go on the same rides.

One thing you may want to think about is insuring your camera equipment. I have a rider on my homeowners policy that insures for loss and damage. It was really cheap and should anything happen you can get a replacement.

i have a warrenty w/ best buy... if i damage it by dropping... it can either be fixed or replaced... but i rather not use the warrenty if i have to within the first week. oy.

The Best Buy warranty won't be easy to collect on. They are notoriously bad when it comes to taking care of their customers.

Like Gianna's Papa, I have a rider on my homeowners insurance. (mine has a $100 deductible) It is only a small increase to the policy cost to add it and I'm covered for pretty much everything. If it gets lost or stolen, if I drop it in a lake, if my son spills Dr. Pepper on it.. Those are the things I want covered because in all the time I've been using a camera (25+ years) I've dropped one lens, so I'm not worried as much about the damage I'm going to do but what someone else will do. The Best Buy warranty won't cover most of that stuff (read the fine print, not what the salesman tells you). You can be paranoid and never use your camera or you can get insurance and know that if something happens you're covered well.

Of course I'm saying all this as a photographer who waded through ankle deep mud last spring to get a shot. I ended up falling on my butt, but managed to keep my camera clean. If I didn't have insurance I don't know that I'd have been so fearless about getting that shot and I would have really missed out if I hadn't gone for it.

OP... This is the exact camera that I want to buy my DD for Christmas. I was looking for a bundle like this, but the only one I am finding is at Costco and I really want to purchase it from Best Buy. Can you tell me where you found the bundle? Was it online or at the store?
Thanks!
