Nikon D3000

*tongue in cheek* While I laud you for attempting to wait for better deals, you must be aware that once you buy a dslr, you will get bitten by some bug whether it be the better lens bug, the better camera next year bug, the tripod bug, etc. Money will become irrelevant to your endeavor.

True enough. I'm sorely tempted to trade in my D50 for a D90 and buy that 10.5 fisheye I've been holding off on..

Not trying to bring up an old thread too much, but I am in the same predicament as sallysue. I was going to purchase my first DSLR and was looking at the D60 till the D3000 came out last week. My wife wants to try and get a combo deal with the kit plus another lens but I don't know if that's possible yet. Would you folks still recommend the D3000 over the D40 or D60 for a brand new DSLR wannabe photographer?

Hi Ashmanarion,
You and I both may have our decision made for us already. There is not a D60 to be found anywhere. I was tired of waffeling so I ordered the D60 2-lens kit from Adorama. At first they said it was on the way to their warehouse and would be about 3 days but now they say it's on backorder and will let me know if they don't have it in the next 10 days. If BB has the D3000 on sale tomorrow I will be making the drive to Myrtle Beach or Wilmington and canceling the Adorama order. I can't stand it any longer!!

I went to Best Buy today and they had a combo deal with the D5000 but not the D3000. What they did however, was make a package deal that consisted of a bag(cheaper Lowepro), Extreme 4gb SD Card, an extra battery, a UV Filter, the D3000, the 55-200mm lens for about $943 with tax. What they can do apparently is make up a package when you buy about three accessories and then price it. She had to stay on the phone for a while(20 minutes) to do this, but she was very nice. She was also a big Disney fan and did not know about these boards so I shared the love. I went to a local camera shop after and they have a deal where I can get 100 bucks off the 55-200 lens if I buy it with the camera. They had a really nice new Lowepro bag that I liked as well so I'll probably get it from there.

Be aware that Nikon makes two 55-200 lenses; one is VR and the other is not. Also, if you are interested in the D40, B&H has the D40 two lens kit with the VR version of the 55-200 for $705 shipped (you have to add to cart to see the final, discounted price).

When I was looking to buy I saw that site also, I couldn't find one person to say anything good about it. Seems like a lot of people saying they never got the camera......:confused3

Tomorrow, a store (meijer.com) will have their 15% off sale using their credit card. I want to buy one of the 2 in the title. I can get the D90 (online only - free shipping) for $986 or the D3000 (in-store only) for $450 - both including tax. I am not a professional but like to take nice photos (I frequently borrow my mom's Nikon - don't know which one, but it is very nice and under 2 yrs old). Consumer Reports says that the picture quality is excellent for the D90 and very good (the next best rating) for the D3000. Would it be worth the extra $500 for the D90?? TIA :goodvibes

From the sound of it...you sound like you're just getting started in photography. I'd probably recommend starting with the D3000 and see if you get into some of the intricacies that the D90 and up model allow. If you tend to use your camera in Auto or P mode I'm not sure how much you would value the higher end features.

Thanks! How about the image quality? Will I be able to tell the difference?
ETA - I'm on Consumer Reports right now and looking at the Olympus E-620. Any opinions on this one (I can get it for $664 incl.tax with 14-42mm and 40-150mm Lenses)? Thanks!

I'm pretty darn certain that I can say you will not notice a bit of difference. SLR's all have outstanding picture quality. Definitely not worth the increase in prict just for that.

The Olympus is another good camera. It's fairly compact by SLR standards. Really I'd see if you can hold each of these cameras to see which you like best that way.

Ones I would consider:

Olympus E-620
Nikon D3000 D90(meijer doesn't carry the D5000)
Pentax K-x
Canon XSi

That's the ones I See on Meijer's website that I would recommend. Go and try them out if possible!

You're not going to see a quality difference. The differences in quality relate to the person using the camera, not the cameras themselves.

The difference in cameras is mainly ergonomical and what you want in the "system" (ie, what lenses you may want.) Pentax, Nikon, Sony, Canon, Olympus, all have low end, middle end, and high end model cameras. The difference in the models are features and the differences from brand to brand are ergonomics. Go to the store and physically look and pick up the cameras in your hand.

I'm so excited!!! I just got home from Best Buy with my new Nikon D3000!!! I am letting the battery fully charge before I start playing with it...the main reason for that is that I brought some work home this weekend and if I don't get this done before I start playing with the camera I doubt it will get done before in the morning. Anyway...this is my first SLR, it came with 2 lenses, a camera bag and a Nikon video. Any tip for this first timer??

Read the manual,re-read the manual ask questions don't be afraid to try something thats not in the manual read the manual and have fun and take a whole bunch of pictures. You can always ask for help here and get it.:thumbsup2 If you look back on the threads that have been posted before you might find the answer you are looking for if not just ask.Plus their are a bunch of websites with a lot of good information

Congratulations! Go and play! Then play some more! Pay attention to what you like and dislike and figure out what you did wrong. Then go play some more!
