Nicest Hotel You Ever Stayed At

Best hotels:
1. Polynesian Village Resort, WDW 1972 🌺
2. Kona Village, Kaua'i, Hawaii 1985 🌺
3. CoCo Palms, Kaua'i, Hawaii 1985 🌺

Wow, I stayed at Coco Palms in 1972, glad it is still there.

It's pretty close. Perhaps the classiest was the Allegro Hotel in downtown Chicago.

We stayed in some nice hotels in Asia when visiting expat friends working there. Maybe the Four Seasons Shanghai Pudong. That one was really bizarre because we paid for the breakfast as part of our booking. It was really good, but the restaurant manager was clearly English. Also another European chain on that trip.

Both of mine are located in the historic district of Charleston, SC:

The Harbourview Inn & Charleston Place.

The Grand Wailea on Maui was on my bucket list for a long time. Our trip was cancelled because of COVID and we finally got there in 2023. It was just jaw-dropping; amazing pools, grounds, rooms and service. We were upgraded to ocean view rooms too which was the cherry on top of the cake.

I also liked the Palace Hotel in SF, and Le Grand in Paris - both very similar. The Roosevelt in New Orleans is another standout for its character.

La Quinta - no not the chain, the resort in La Quinta (Palm Springs). DW and I went out there a couple of times to celebrate out AUGUST anniversary. Yes, it was hot, but it was also made the resort even nicer as the price was really low and the crowds were non-existent. We had whole pools to ourselves.

My mom spent her last few years in a group home not far from there. I have stayed in the resort many times. In the Summer I could get it for under a 100 a night. The embassy suites in La Quinta is also great mostly for location. I miss going there.

Probably the Bali Intercontinental Resort for our honeymoon in 2001.

More recently and local to me. The Sandpiper Resort in Harrison Mills BC Canada. Such a beautiful place.

I love Charleston - we’ve stayed at French Quarter Inn and Mills House but would love to stay at Charleston Place next time! Can’t go wrong with a pool in the summer months.

I don't know if its the nicest, but I just spent a couple of nights at the Kimpton hotel in Huntington beach. They upgraded us to an ocean view suite. It was nice.

I will always appreciate my stays at the Deluxe resorts at WDW and Universal. They have always been great. Our upgrade to one-bedroom at Riviera during Covid was pretty sweet.

The Waldorf in London is another one that sticks out.

I think the hotel stays that stick out the most is when I've gotten some unexpected upgrade. Our stay at the Pan Pacific in Vancouver 2014 we got upgraded to the penthouse suite because they ran out of rooms with two beds. The Pan Pacific is my winner. I've been to Vancouver twice since then and haven't been able to afford that hotel.

*Full disclosure, I work for Hilton.

Small world!

My first hotel was at the International Hilton’s first foray into the US marketplace, the Vista, located @ WTC; we all know what happened to it.

Was accepted by Hilton Lites and moved on to 6 month internships at a variety of Hiltons in Europe. Got headhunted back to the states and wound up at what was then the flagship of domestic Hilton, Wβ‰ˆA, which was too β€œgood” to use NY Hilton linen or towels, lol.
Have you ever heard of Gudrun Zimmermann? I worked for her and survived which I still consider my crowning achievement, professionally wise.

One cool feature of their pool is that it has a retractable roof that is open in the warmer months and closed during cold months. Also, their jacuzzi is located in the top of the clock tower and has views down Meeting Street to the harbour.

Despite that I work for a large hotel company, I don't stay at luxury hotels too often. The company has has us at a few choice properties before or course, which has been nice. The Waldorf Astoria Park City come to mind as just lovely.

One time though they took us for one-night for a meeting at this very fancy hotel in Virginia - not one that is in our portfolio. I did not care for it one bit. Yes, it was a super-nice room with all the luxury amenities and beautiful grounds, but it had a weird vibe. The staff was so defferent, like to the point of casting their eyes away from you. A housekeeper apologized to me for tossing some sheets into a laundry bin, as if it was an affront that I had to witness that (she was not in my way at all). It was a bit strange to me - like, you don't have to apologize for existing. It was a real 1%-er kind of place. That's not my thing. I was there feeling like my luggae wasn't fancy enough to be there! 🀣

Hampton inns are always solid.

"Waldorf Astoria" gave you away! We're Honors members and stay at Hilton properties whenever we can. DD and I just returned from a weekend stay at the Hilton Boston/Woburn. Room was great, bed was amazing, and our room had an indoor balcony, where we could overlook the lounge and restaurant- great for people watching, and the restaurant there has tapas that rival those we had at Jaleo! (and the cocktail list is nothing to be sneezed at!)

We've stayed in the Mauna Lani Bungalows, on the Big Island, several times. They're free-standing, 4,000 square-foot 2BR, 2-1/2BA structures, each with its own pool and butler. They're so nice we didn't want to leave. They definitely rank up there with the nicest places we've stayed.

Hands down for me, the Williamsburg Inn. It was always on my bucket list to stay there. Now, I've stayed there 11 times since July 2021. My sister and I have our 8th stay there coming up in October.

This was our room in July:

Pretty sure it never came back due to insurance issues after Iniki wiped it out. That was one of the hotels we stayed at on our honeymoon so I kept hoping to make a return visit.

I second this list and add the Royal Hawai'ian in Honolulu and the Bali Hai overwater bungalows in Mo'orea Tahiti. They may not have been the bougie-est hotels I've stayed in but they all sure had personality.

The Grand Wailea as other have mentioned was really nice.

To add (and probably forgetting some really nice places):
  • Mandarin Oriental in Geneva was beautiful with amazing service (and a really excellent breakfast)
  • Love the Conrad St. James in London
  • Hayman Island (though I see that this is now a Marriott property - not sure how much that might have changed things, I was there something like 30 years ago)
  • Enashipai on Lake Naivasha - only place I've been for work where I could feed hippos at lunch

The Langham New York City Fifth Avenue when it was called The Setai. The corner suite was out of this world, great view of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, impeccable service.

The Pontchartrain Hotel on St. Charles in New Orleans. We stayed in the Hale Boggs suite during a hurricane once, years ago (more than 30). It was quite a night.

Also in New Orleans, the Roosevelt Waldorf Astoria is a grande dame of an hotel that was restored about 20 years ago, not long before we stayed in a suite when my friend’s son graduated from LSU. During the Christmas season there were afternoon teas for mother’s and daughters. Hope they still have those. The lobby of the hotel runs a block long and is quite a sight with all the white lit Christmas trees. My husband’s god daughter was married there about 10 years ago. Beautiful setting .

We use Airbnb nowadays but I'd say Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort was very lovely. It was years and years ago.

The Grand Hyatt at DFW airport and San Francisco are great. The crab Louie at SF from room service is chef’s kiss.

The Four Season’s in Austin, TX, is nice. The W seems overrated. Lots of plasticy decor.

Hotel del Coronado is nice, but our room in the annex was a bit mildewy.

Palazzo in Vegas is nice. Bellagio too.

Hapuna Beach hotel Kohala, Big Island, Hawaii.

The rooms at Palazzo are wonderful, but Wynn/Encore is where it's at. They just do everything right. True luxury.

I own stock and have been wanting to stay at Wynn/Encore for a while.

Hampton inns are always solid.
Not the ones in Terre Haute, IN, or Slydell, LA.
