There is an article in this weeks Newsweek on growing up with Autism. I have yet to read it but if anyone has a chance. FYI

April

I thought the Newsweek article was really good. It's a shame that when kids turn 21 their services are usually discontinued.

Here in Massachusetts, services through the town's education system are given until the student's 22nd birthday, then there are a multitude of adult programs available.

Thanks for sharing. Good article.

I was at a conference in October called "Closing the Gap", which is regarding assistive technology (computers and other assistive devices) for children and adults with disabilities. In talking some of the parents there, the thing many were most worried about was what would happen to their children (with a variety of disabilities, not just autism) once they 'aged out' of the school system. We are relatively lucky in Minnesota that there are programs available after school age. Some of the parents I talked to in other states knew there were similar programs in their state, but that there were long waiting lists.

Thanks for the link. As the mother of an autistic 5 year old DS I can tell you how scary the thoughts of the future can be. Thanks for sharing. Angel
