They actually COULD likely make a Marvel hotel. The deal says essentially "Not in the Parks". That's why they had a Marvel advert on the MK monorail but not on the Epcot one. (MK loop doesn't go through the parks, Epcot loop does.) They also have a Marvel store at DTD (is it officially DS yet?). A Marvel themed hotel would be unlikely to violate the letter of the agreement. However, I still think Disney wouldn't do it. I would guess they feel there is already too much confusion between what's at Disney and what's at Universal. Having Marvel theme park rides at Uni and a Marvel hotel at WDW would only make that worse.

That's great, they have plenty of characters to choose from. I wonder which ones they would select.

The most likely candidates to get their own theme sections would be. (if laid out like Pop and Art)

the Avengers, X-men, Spiderman and the Fantastic Four

NFL was around 500 million total I think. mermaid was 100 million alone. Avatar is more around 700 million.

I have not heard any numbers on disney springs. That number won't probably be as high because RCID will pay for the roads and parking improvements, and then you have tenant fees and such.

Avatar I think is running $600-700 million, though that might include other DAK stuff like the Rivers of Light show. I haven't heard a lot of rumors about Disney Springs. That's certainly a several hundred million level investment. I don't think that a lot of the money is being fronted by the tenants, but I am sure they are hoping to offset the depreciation with income from the tenants, that's for sure.

Nice, thanks.

It does seem like other things though, but probably not expensive.

MK hub, Soarin 2, Frozen, TSM 2, new FOTLK.

Maybe close to $2 Billion before this latest $3.8, plus D Springs?

That would be awesome, but I don't think they can use the characters because of the Universal and Marvel deal.

They can in California. But they won't. Right now Disney only promotes the film versions of characters and I don't think that will change until they can build a cohesive marketing campaign between film and comic versions.

They will be using more of marvel soon in DCA

I don't really think Marvel rides will/can come to WDW, but I just ran across this article of some fun speculation. Again, pure fiction, but a girl can dream of a GOtG ride, right?

One of the reader comments on the bottom about not previously utilized stories, if true, could be an interesting loophole.
Thats what i said they can't really use marvel in WDW. They do have a marvel themed store in DTD. They can use guardians of the galaxy and did with a movie preview in DHS but as for any of the avengers, X-men, and spiderman characters they can't.

I worked on a Disney-related Marvel piece and all they wanted to promote was the film versions because they what the vast majority of today's children and teens know and love and where all the Marvel profit is. They seemed very interested in mining the comics for film, but not interested in all in promoting versions of characters not on-screen. All the resource artwork they provided me was from the art direction pieces from films. Comics related things like action figures? Disney typically leaves that stuff for Marvel in-house.

I understand this, I worked in animation, film and comics long enough to know everyone who makes decisions get promoted from marketing.

I've never gone to Disneyland, but if they build a 3rd park and a Marvel Resort, I'll have go out west.

They could always use Guardians of the Galaxy, Big Hero 6 or the other obscure stories Disney is trying to push. There really isn't a point on building a Marvel land if you can't use the big characters though. Maybe an individual ride in Tomorrowland or something like that.

They're in tight spot with those two (or more) universes. The Cinematic Universe is as you say the most popular and what people care about most, and that's how it will be portrayed in the parks. The problem with the comics is they are radically different from the movies, and it would be confusing to audiences to try an reconcile the fact that Thor's a guy in one universe and a girl in another. Falcon is Falcon in one universe and Captain America in another. Things like that would really just cause marketing mayhem, and could negatively effect the boat loads of cash brought in by each new installment of the cinematic universe.

Go where the money is.

How about Marvel?

But...

Because most of the Marvel universe exist in our world, a Marvel hotel would essentially be like the Pop resorts with monuments and decor related to the characters. A Star Wars hotel could be much more immersive in theming - like when I stay at the Wilderness Lodge I fell like I'm in a lodge in the Pacific Northwest. I'm transformed there.

I didn't even think of that. Marvel stories do mostly take place in New York City. That would limit the look of the resort thus making it less appealing.

I definitely see why you'd want a Star Wars resort instead. The movies take place on planets that are totally different. I'd love to see what a Dagobah swamp area would look like.

The four sections they could go with would be vastly different

Ice, Swamp, Desert, and Forest w/ a Death Star or Spaceship main building

Truthfully, I think a Marvel OR Star Wars hotel is very unlikely. Disney tends to keep their hotels in very Neutral themes. The thing is, they want the hotels to appeal to all reaches of people, and a Star Wars hotel, while appealing strongly to a segment of the population, would also turn off a large segment of the population. If you look at all their resorts/hotels throughout all the Disney Parks, they generally don't do that. There's a few exceptions (the Pirate theme rooms at CBR, AoA to a degree). The risk with any of this is the potential of the IP to become dated and fall out of favor. It's been one of the biggest reasons for turnover at Universal is customers lose interest in the IP. (Look at the ride list from 20 years ago at US and see what's still around. Star Wars is a pretty safe bet, but still in 20 years what if Star Wars falls by the wayside and you have a hotel that no-one wants to stay at.
