News Round Up 2016

True...a lower point charge would mitigate the higher upfront cost some...that's their only recourse.

But...then you've got the same problem at Saratoga or animal kingdom: those owners (hand raised) would flood the wilderness lodge with older, cheaper points.

I am not sure why you see this as a "problem". DVC is like any other timeshare - they really don't care THAT much once they've sold the points. Look at the mess that is the Grand Floridian - owners can't get a studio at 11 months a good portion of the year. Do you think Disney really cares? Maybe enough to affect how they build resorts in the future - but not enough to give those owners - the ones that paid more than anyone else up to that time - any compensation for getting totally boned. If I paid $30,000 for a buy-in and couldn't get the week I wanted even booking at 11-months, I would be flipping out.

Even though Disney timeshare is 10x better than most timeshares - it really is still buyer beware.

Oscar Nominations came out. Disney garnered some nominations with Inside Out being nominated for Best Animated Film and Original Screenplay. Also Ghibli's studios last? feature When Marnie Was There is also nominated for Best Animated Feature. Star Wars The Force Awakens was nominated in many technical categories such as editing, sound, visual effects and score. Sanjay's Super Team for Animated Short. Cinderella was nominated for Costume Design, this i really hopes win, not for Cinderella dress but for the great balance the designer did between garish and couture on the step sisters clothes.

The Oscar's will air on ABC this year.

I think you're missing the point of DVC...

It's still to get you there to buy crap. Empty older villas do nothing to accomplish that.

The NFL paid off the academy...because the fact that concussion got no nominations is one of the bigger screw jobs I've ever seen.

And I'm actually glad Star Wars didn't get big awards nominations...they mailed in the plot and did nothing with a shred of originality...

It's still an enjoyable Star Wars movie - no doubt - but it doesn't deserve any picture/director/screenplay awards...

No points for unoriginality

I was hoping the timing was right that we would be out in California for the Oscars, but turns out we will be a week early...not Disney related but glad to see Fury Road got a best picture nom...not your typical best picture but holy cow what a good movie - especially glad to see George Miller get the directing nod - he won't win but what a job he did. Nice mix of big pictures and indies with the Best Picture noms too. Gotta say I thought it was stupid at first, but expanding the Best Picture noms was one thing they did right.

More Disney related - seems a little bit disappointing for TFA to get only a few noms, but in the end not quite a good enough (or original enough) movie to rate academy recognition. Fury Road was a better picture - though less of a "for the masses" one.

But they don't stay empty - DVC is always full. Disney doesn't really care if it's because someone is upstaying at the DVC. All the points are paid for and that what matters. Even the few RCI trade-ins that occur people there buying crap. Their problem is when people stop buying in at the ridiculous prices. Clearly not ridiculous enough though

They're not calling it Star Wars Land?

I am sure like Avatar-land is officially called "Pandora: The World of Avatar", that this will have a name that isn't just "Star Wars Land". Probably something like "Jakku Spaceport- a Star Wars Experience". However - I would be a bit surprised that they would bother to announce what it is this early - so I put that one in the "believe it when I read it" category. Even Rteetz called "grain of salt" on it.

Yeah Screamscape isn't the most reputable when it comes to anything so.

Wait... Poly DVC Tower? Where?

Nothing at all firm - there have been rumors for a while that the current Poly DVC is actually a "Part A", and that eventually there will be a "Part B" that includes 1- and 2- bedroom units. Early rumors were that they could take out / move the Spirit of Aloha show to make room for a tower there, but the latest rumors are with the removal of the racetrack for additional parking, they may move/modify the TTC to allow a tower on the South end of the Poly.

I must warn you this is big-time conjecture and NOT in any way coming from Disney - at least not directly. I'm just repeating existing rumors I've heard. Undoubtedly this is what LOL is referring to.

Bridge of Spies falls under The Walt Disney Company and that movie got a few nominations. I am a little upset that Inside Out didn't get nominated for Best Picture. I felt Star Wars: The Force Awakens was capable of being nominated for Best Picture, possibly Best Director, but it was an outside shot.

I mean I feel like Star Wars Land was for sure was not going to be the final name. It was mentioned at D23 that 'Star Wars Land' was going to be a new planet that we have never seen before. I imagine that Disney will make a new planet that has environments similar to all the main planets that is separate from the movies, but still canon. The name may be 'Said Planet': A Star Wars Land for example Tatooine: A Star Wars Land. This would be similar to the anthology movies like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Again, this is all speculation and guessing, which I think is half the fun in the game. It would be cool if Disneyland Park and Hollywood Studios would have different planets or different environments.

Speaking of actors and Oscar snubs, British actor Alan Rickman has passed away today at the age of 69 after months of battling cancer. Better known for his roles of Hans Gruber in Die Hard and Severus Snape in Harry Potter, Alan's final film was Disney's Alice Through the Looking Glass to premiere later this year.

As a big Potter fan, this really saddens me. RIP Alan Rickman.

I'm mourning that Charlie Brown once again only got a rock. At least the Good Dinosaur was left out which hopefully will teach someone something.

It looks like Disney only distributed Bridge of Spies in North America. We were looking at this earlier and it seems like virtually every studio out there did something when it came to this film.

You know I can't speak for all deluxe resorts as I have only stayed at one and that was my most recent trip this past week at the beach club. That hotel didn't seem to be empty as it was always bustling with people. It was during marathon weekend which is busier than let's say this week but not nearly as busy as summer or the holidays. I'm really interested to see what other resorts are like.

Note that the deluxes have their lowest occupancy in the summer. We stayed at the YC one summer and only saw one other family on our floor the entire visit.
