Im trying to book a quick trip (2 nights) for Dads day - would be 2 couples, 2 kids...anyone have a recommendation for accomodations in the heart of the Newport activity! Willing to look into any price range! Thanks :teeth:

I know Newport's no Disney, but anyone out there? :teeth:

Check out the Marriott on the water...walking distance to everything.

We loved our stay at The Viking. It is beautifully restored.

I stayed at the Marriott there and it is very close to lots of things. I recommend this hotel.

Marriott is extremely expensive. I would try Hotel Viking, or we just recently stayed at the Jailhouse Inn. Right in the hub of everything. Great hotel, staff a little unfriendly, but we didn't spend much time there.

The Newport Marriott is great, and right in the middle of everything. If cost is no object, this would be a great choice.
I miss our weekend trips to Newport now that we have moved to NC!

Jen

I haven't stayed there, but for hotel recommendations, I'd go to www.tripadvisor.com. This gives you great reviews of hotels, and their reviewed by the people who stayed there.

THANK YOU ALL! :goodvibes
I will check out Newport Marriott! Im assuming/hoping walking distance is doable w/ 2 toddlers?!

Any restaurant/shopping/recreation recommendations? :teeth:

Walking is definatly doable with 2 kids. There are a bunch of shops right across the street from the Marriott also. A great restaurant is Brick Alley Pub (within the shops) - great food! Don't know if you would be interested in the newport mansion tours or not, but if so you could look into doing that (maybe someone has some recommendations on kid-friendly ones). Down by the mansions is the ocean, so you could check that out too.
Have fun!

Thanks Jen! I just googled their menu - YUMMMY! :stir:

We'll be out there (in the Marriott) that weekend too!

Check out: www.gonewport.com

A lot of the rest. are kid friendly....just walk up and down Thames you'll come across a bunch of great places.

One thing to definately do with the little ones is take a ride over to Benton Park and watch all the kites!

DH spent some time in Newport with the Navy... and we spent a lot of time there last summer when we were temporarily living in Hartford, Connecticut! :rotfl: There's a lot more to do in Newport than Hartford!

-The Mansions are a lot of fun. We enjoyed doing them as kids with family, too. What are the ages?
-I wouldn't suggest doing the whole Cliff Walk with little ones, but you might have a lot of fun doing small portion of it and packing lunch.
-The Newport Creamery! AWFUL AWFULS! (I am so jealous right now)
-Don't know if you're tennis players. The Tennis Hall of Fame it there.
-May still be chilly, but there is, of course, beaching. Might want to take a look and see if First Beach or Second Beach better suits your needs.
-There's lots and lots of shopping.
-Consider doing one of the harbor tours. They're a lot of fun and take you up close to some of the mansions (at least they used to). It's a really interesting perspective.
-Check and see if there's anything going on at Fort Adams. If not, you may want to take a trip anyway. It's a gorgeous facility. We've gone to the Newport Folk Festival for years, so we have very fond memories of the place. It offers fabulous views of the Newport Bridge and surrounding areas. Perfect for a bright, sunny day.
-Restaurants: 22 Bowen's, Vincent's on the Pier, Flo's Clam Shack, Brick Alley Pub, Mamma Luisa's (yummy!)

You'll have a fantastic time!
xoxo

Wowza! Thanks for the info! My kids are only 3 so cant go too far w/ them, but 1 really likes to shop w/ her Mom ;)

Id like to find something all 3 generations (me, kids, parents) will enjoy for Dads day!

DH and I spent last weekend in Newport. We have stayed at the Marriott many times- it is conveniently located and walking distance to the wharf area shops. They also have a nice indoor pool. Walk down Thames Street -there are many interesting shops and restaurants there.

We love the mansions though they might be a little much with toddlers. They also do not allow strollers.

Another kid friendly restaurant is The Red Parrott. I agree about the Brick Alley Pub- we ate there on Saturday- the Lobster Rueben was awesome.

Take a walk on the Cliff Walk- wonderful views and it passes by the back of many mansions.

Easton Beach is beautiful if you want to spend some time sunning and swimming.

The Mariott is great. I know many people that have stayed there and gave it :thumbsup2 I'm less than an hour from Newport so I have no personal experience with hotels unfortunately.

The Red Parrot is great food and is very kid friendly. You must get chowdah from the Black Pearl - it's a bit swanky but definitely worth it. even if you get take out.

if you want something that's almost as good but more kid friendly, the stuffies at the RI Quahog Company are really good and is right on Thames so it's very convenient.

Lots of fun stores at Long Wharf Mall - especially the Only in RI store. It was named best gift store in RI a couple years in a row. Bannister's Wharf has a candy store the kids will definitely be interested in

AWESOME SUGGESTIONS! :goodvibes :thumbsup2
Is candy store in walking distance from Marriott? :confused3
Lobster Reuben....yummy yummy

Awesome place to visit!! I love the mansion tours and the tour of Hammersmith Farm (Jackie's families former summer home and the location of Jackie & JFK's wedding reception).. The Ocean Cliff walk is nice and just walking around the shops in the Wharf area is very entertaining..

I also stumbled upon Castle Hill Inn, anyone familiar, looks gorgeous & very expensive! May be too pricey, doesnt seem to be in the hub of things either?

You really won't find any "dumpy" places right in the heart of Newport.. It's a high class area and the prices of accomodations reflect that.. Both times that I have visited Newport I was actually staying on the Cape and took day trips over there..

Darn! Now you're making me want to go to Newport again - LOL.. I haven't been there since '96 I think..

Go to Newport Go to Newport ;)
Actually, we're coming from the Cape! :)
