Hi all, new here with a few questions. I have not been to DisneyWorld since 1983. (Went to Tokyo Disney twice in the 90's). We are trying to plan a trip for Dec 2005. There are 6 of us, 2 adults, 4 kids ages 3-9. We really want to get there while our oldest is still young enough to get swept up in the magic, but a Disney vacation for a family of 6 ain't cheap! I have heard that renting points from a DVC member can sometimes be a more affordable route. Plus, it would allow us to stay in place with a kitchen so we could eat in sometimes and save money on food. Could someone please give me some info on this?

Renting a DVC accommodation from a DVC member can certainly be less costly than the same reservation thru Disney- but make sure to know what that cost would be before renting from a member. Since weekends are much more expensive from a member (higher number of points required to make the reservation), if your dates will include Friday or Saturday, it may be less costly to get a direct reservation.

Rentals from a member will not get daily housekeeping and will likely have a less accommodating cancellation policy - so make sure you are comfortable with all aspects of the rental.

Post the resort, villa type and dates you'd like on the rent/trade board and see if someone can help. (You can also respond to an offer to rent posted by a member.)

Enjoy!

Well, points tend to go for about $10 per point. There is a rent/trade board on this forum...there are lots of points available.

You would need a 2bdrm for 6 people (and, realistically you would want 2 bathrooms). One week in a 2 bedroom ranges anywhere from 218-426 points, depending on when you want to go. Fri and Sat nites are much more expensive than Sun-Thurs.

Different renters have different "terms", usually requiring a deposit to make the ressie, and then the balance due at some point later.

Two things to remember:
1) Cancelling is not as easy for the owner as it would be for you if you were staying at a hotel. If you needed to cancel...there may be penalties imposed by the owner.
2) You need to book pretty far out at many times of the year...so, plan ahead.

If you find someone who will rent points to you, give them the dates you are wanting to go and have them check availability as well as cost.

Hope this helps,

Just to give you an idea, I rented points recently for a studio for 12 nights. At $10pp, it cost $1220.00 . According to the WDW web site, the same room for the same dates would have cost $3866.88 at rack rate. That's a savings of $2646.88. You could probably find some sort of discount on the room somewhere if you looked around - but I doubt it would beat that savings!
If you can manage the less flexible cancelation poilcy, and are flexible on either the resort you want or the dates (in case what you had in mind isn't available), it very well could save you a good amount of money. There are other resorts nearby WDW that have 1 and 2 bedroom suites with kitchens that may be less expensive - but there is definitely a certain magic and convinience to staying on-site! Good luck and I hope you have a great trip!

You can go to www.tagrel.com and use the points comparison chart to see how many points you would need for your stay. The chart is great because it puts all the different options right in front of you. Figure $10 ppt and that will give you your cost for the trip. Then read all the important posts on the Rent/Trade board to get started. Renting still requires a leap of faith, but I've never heard of scams or ripoffs from anyone using this board. Good luck!
