another questons is if i bank say july of 2004 pts how long do i have to use them before i lose them?
one more queston is if i get in using the timeshare store so i can pick my home base(beachclub)and then need to add pts in the future do i have to wait until they come avallible at the store again because the beachclub is sold out thru disney?
i have went back 2 months on the boards reading old post just to answer some questons i have.
we have gone to disney 8 times and went on 4 cruises and i don't know what took me so long to invest into dvc.
i thought a few years ago there was some catch to it and it wasn't for us but the more i read about it as long as your disney fan(never mind a disney freak like we are our)its perfect.
thanks everyone for the help.

Let's say your use year is July. If you bank your 2003 points in 2004, you will have to use the banked points by June 30, 2005. Use years go like this with use year July-
2003 points- July1, 2003 thur June 30, 2004
2004 points- July1, 2004 thur June 30, 2005
and so on. They banking times depend on the use year. You can bank all the points into the next use years within the first six months. The % you can bank goes down after that. You should get the same use year when you add on because it keeps thing much easier. The same resort isn't as important. We have points at OKW and VB for the 11 month window option. You can buy through Disney or the timeshare store. Either one will work. I believe from what you have said that DVC is right for you. Good luck with your choice and maybe soon we can "WELCOME YOU HOME".

We have been members since 2000 and we are still learning about DVC. Most good - a little bad.

Let's see if we can get some ideas here:

If you are going on vacations in July or Aug, you need to consider doing two things:

a. Getting a use year 11 months out from July or Aug - that way you can get the exact dates you want sooner - you get to reserve 11 months out at your home resort and only 7 months out at the others;

b. Make sure you buy at the location you want to stay at to ensure you get to go where you want.

With respect to using your points, I like to think of them as a three year deal. You can bank for one year, use them in the same year and/or borrow from the year ahead. If you bank, you lose them if you don't use them by the end of the next use year. So, if you wanted to go on one super vacation, you could bank all your points for one year and borrow the points from the next - and have three years worth of points to use.

With respect to buying points, there are basically three ways. Through Disney, through a reseller - there is an excellant one that sponsors this site and you can search the web for others, or buy direct from someone you know is selling. The last never happens. Remember, Disney has the right of first refusal, so buying from a reseller has its drawbacks because your offer may be accepted by the seller, but then Disney steps in and buys them from under you.

By the way, we have decided to add points on, so, as you can surmise, we are very please with the DVC.

Lastly, I think that the Disboards are the best on the web for all things Disney and especially the DVC - I am learning a lot of stuff that I did not know and I think it will make my future days at WDW that much better.

Hope this helps.

Talk to your guide. Many here have reported that they have been able to request and receive a use year other than the one that is currently offered. DVC does not offer July use years (or January, May or November) at any of the resorts. No one knows why.

If you plan to travel mainly in July and August, a use year of February, March, April or June should work well for you.

Banked points are good for one additional year. For example if you have a June use year, your 2003 points would be good for a stay that falls between 6/1/2003 and 5/31/2004. If you bank those 2003 use year points, they would become valid for stays between 6/1/2004 and 5/31/2005. Once points are banked, they cannot be returned to their original use year and cannot be banked again.

Yes, once a resort is sold out through Disney, you can only purchase points from the resale market. The Timeshare Store is one broker in that market. Sometimes it takes a while for the "right" contract to become available. (Obviously, you have to have someone who has the resort and point quantity you want willing to sell at the time you want to buy).

Welcome to the boards and good luck with your "DVC Quest"

One point of clarity, you can reserve 11 months from the date of your departure date for your home resort and 7 months from your departure date for other resorts. You do not need to have the points available in your account at the time of the reservation but rather at the time you use them.

If I understood your post, you seem to have a misunderstanding about the relationship between use year and the booking window. Use year has nothing to do with when you can call to reserve your accomodations. No matter what use year you have, you are always able to call 11 months ahead of your anticipated check out date to reserve your room. You do not have to have points in your account when you call. They only have to be there when you arrive.

For example, let's say you have a June use year and want to vacation November 6-8, 2004. You may call for that reservation on December 9, 2003 (because you would be checking out on 11/9). You would be using 2004 use year points, because those points are good for stays between 6/1/2004 and 5/31/2005. Your planned Novemnber stay falls within that range. You can call and make that reservation in December of 2003 even though the 2004 points technically will not be in your account until 6/1/2004. What matters is that they will be there when you arrive!

Hope that is clear - please post again if it is not. Would hate for you to miss an opportunity!

You are right - I did get them confused!

See - I am learning stuff from the boards!

Thanks.

i hope people don't think i am as dense as some of these questons sound.ha!
i kind of get the bank thing and usage date.(kind of)
so we were thinking about waiting until the end of this year to purchase into dvc and to have pts start in 2004 because we are not going to use pts in 2003.but if we are able to purchase now will we get 2003 pts banked into our account if we are able to close before end of year?so if i were able to get say april, may or june as our usage date we would have twice as many pts for 2004 summer vacation?and what are chances of getting something booked at closing at bc or bw for august next year if it is not my home base?
thanks again
mr dense

Yes if you bought a contract with 2003 points, you could bank them and then use them all in 2004. Plus you could borrow 2005's points and really spend some time at WDW.

what are chances of getting something booked at closing at bc or bw for august next year if it is not my home base?

You will hear it here often. Buy where you want to stay. The only way you could book at closing would be if it was within 7 months of when you wanted to go. Otherwise you would have to wait until some time in January of 2004 to book August at the BCV.

As another post says, there are now over 75,000 members. The samller resorts like the BCV will fill up fast when the 7 month window opens.
