New York tips and discussion

Ok, since my earlier post I've discovered that Virgin Holidays do packages to NY and the deposit is only £300! They have some pretty good offers on. If we want to go from Manchester, the flights are with Delta (direct). I've never flown with Delta so I don't know how good they are. Any opinions? :)

My bf is going for a week over new year, with 9 other people including a few first timers (it'll be his third trip) To try and placate my jealousy *LOL* i've been getting my oar in with his planning so I may well be participating in this thread again, despite me not actually going myself :rolleyes1 I've already demanded that he HAS to take everyone here: http://www.sugarsweetsunshine.com/

I flew with Delta when I went to NYC, can't fault them, they currently have a very generous hand luggage allowence of 18kg which is nearly as much as hold luggage.

The food wasn't nice coming back but was fine going out

We have now booked! :yay:

We're going for five nights next April, flying direct with Delta and staying at the Palace again (). I'm so excited to be going back!

Thanks Nikki, that's good to know. :)

It's ok, I'll have a steady supply of Cheetos!! :rotfl:

Great news that you have booked again, I want to go back soon but there are other places I want to see first & i'm meant to be saving for a house:rolleyes1

Regarding the food, luckily we ate at the airport before our flight so it wasn't really a problem

The New York Palace must owe me some commission by now... :lmao:

Enjoy the Big Apple again Lauren :)

:goodvibes

Sssh, don't mention anything sensible! Do you not fancy going to WDW at some point?

You're right, they must! I'm forever indebted to you for recommending it. :thumbsup2

Thanks, I will do. :goodvibes

:rotfl2: I try not to think about sensible especially when it comes to holidays buts i'm getting on;) A group of us are hoping to go to WDW soon, we will probably hire a Villa that way people can do what they want. Failing that my mate & I might go if the others can't save quick enough

Ohh great thread! We are off to NY in October! DH's first time and my third, thought the last time was 9 years ago so can't remember much! Does anyone know how long the journey from JFK to midtown is roughly? We were going to get a taxi, but thinking of booking Virgin's transfers if the distance / cost is massive.

Its about 35-40 minutes on a good run. The cab drivers know the best routes. Its a flat fee of about $45 from JFK currently

We didn't bother with a taxi last time, we got the AirTrain. This travels to Jamaica Station (around 10 minutes from JFK) and you then swap to the subway system. It costs $5 per person to Jamaica Station. Subway prices vary- we bought weekly tickets, which were $27 each.

I can't recommend the AirTrain enough- it was really quick and easy to use and we were in our Midtown Manhattan hotel within 40 minutes of leaving JFK. :thumbsup2

Congratulations on booking again Lauren, you didn't waste much time did you? ;)
We just got back yesterday and loved it, such a great trip and the weather was fantastic for us but maybe a little too humid. We'd love to go back at some point, my fiance loved it much more than I thought he would but with our WDW wedding to save for and other places we want to visit we don't know when or even if we will :(

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip. What did you do over there? How was the Millenium Hilton?

It was a lovely hotel, we really liked it and the staff all seemed really nice & friendly and of course it was nice to have a swim in the pool at the end of a long day. It was a little strange at first with our room over looking ground zero, i'd like to go back to see it once its all been done the memorial is all completed.
It was so easy getting about, i was a little worried we'd feel a bit out of it being down in the financial district but it really wasn't a problem and didn't take long at all to get upto times sq & other areas

I'm glad you enjoyed it. It does look like a nice hotel and it usually has good rates (probably due to its proximity to Ground Zero). It is a little strange around that area, very sombre (as one would expected). It will be good when all the work has been done. Did you go to Century 21?

Yeah, I'd agree with that. The Subway is really easy to use and a lot of the tourist sites are within a walkable distance from one another.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, currently reading it from the start, but wondering for anyone who's booked for next year what kind of flight prices are they looking at?

Going from Glasgow doesn't give me much options but it looks like I may be going back to NY in March (yay! loved it last time!) for my Mum's 50th, so there will be me, my mum and dad and my boyfriend, 4 adults. My dad won't consider going indirect so I think Continental are our only option. Not bothered about the fact it's Newark as I've been there twice before.

ANYWAY, enough rambling! Yesterday direct with Continental was £470, today it's up to £500 :( I don't know what to recommend to my dad! I think he's (begrudgingly) happy about that price although he'd like to get it cheaper. To compare our flights to Orlando this year with Continental (GLA-EWR-MCO) cost £350. My dad has (very kindly!) offered to pay for mine and my boyfriend's flights so I'd really like to save him some money.

It's the old how long is a piece of string but part of me thinks if we wait until later in the year/January we'll end up getting a better deal :confused3

Don't worry about it, I think it's been a really good thread for people visiting New York and I hope it continues to be! :thumbsup2

We've booked a package with VH for our next trip. The flights are with Delta and, according to the search I've just done now, they would cost £471 per person if you booked them today. This is for April 2011, so the prices you've found for March sound pretty average.

Yeah, I know I'm holding out for a miracle! I just have it in the back of my head I want to get as close to £350 as possible as that's what we paid to Orlando. I suppose a £150 increase isn't SO bad. The annoying thing is the last time we went to NY in 2006 cost £550 each for direct flights and 4 nights :scared1: Looks like I should maybe just tell my dad to get the flights booked.

I really just don't want him to get ripped off especially when he's paying for 2 extra bodies! He could probably take my mum in 1st Class if it wasn't for us!

I love new York but imagine it will a good while till we go again.

We went with continental in march for our first anniversary and stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square which was brilliant.

Would recommend seeing a comedy show if you're into that kind of thing, we loved it.

Also would recommend a boat tour and top of the rock tickets which we got really cheap as a package.

I've been 3 times now but last time was by far the most special as I went with my wife.
